Ben Solo being a heroic, cocky and slightly clumsy Jedi. Might be my favourite moment of the entire film. It's such a shame we're never going to see him again. It's one of the great injustices of the Sequel Trilogy.
@SchultzDorinda
@SchultzDorinda 4 жыл бұрын
It would've been a better development to end with Ben alive and Rey to stay dead. And have Ben move on from his mistakes, carry on the Skywalker name and maintain the balance of the Force (like making sure that the new generations are balanced between light and dark as he knows both ways of the Force) It would've given more meaning to the title 'The Rise Of Skywalker' if it meant Ben. Plus he could've named the new generations of force wielders Skywalker. Maybe even establish his future on Tatooine in his family's old home. That would've been a perfect conclusion to the legacy of the family of the Force.

It really is an injustice, because they set up that he might have a happy ending where he gets to live and be with Rey and they'll never have to be alone anymore. Remember "You're not alone" and "Neither are you"? Yeah, TLJ knew what it was doing and what it wanted, but here it felt like he was shafted just to get rid of him because oh no, we can't have him alive it would be too problematic. Come on, it could have worked if they had just gone back to the writing and thought it through.

I think Palpatine was literally all the Sith implying the Rule of Two means that once the apprentice kills his master they become one, slowly becoming stronger and stronger with each Sith master. But I think Rey meant metaphorically when she said she was all the Jedi. She has all the Jedi behind her helping her along the way and that good will overcome bad every time.
@ajw5388
@ajw5388 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think you nailed it. I think this interpretation of the Rule of Two was a really cool lore moment for TROS personally. One thing I might’ve changed though is that instead of Rey hearing the voices, they could’ve had all of the force ghosts gather behind Rey and lend her their strength.

I'm pretty sure that's how it worked in legends. The whole rule of 2 thing was so the sith dont have to share power. There is one master with all The power of the dark side (litterally all the dark side force flows through him alone) and an apprentice is found who basically gather the dregs of The dark side power until they have enough to defeat their master at which point they become all powerful in the force. And then they take an apprentice if their own. This is why sith masters are so powerful and why the jedi were so easily defeated in past episodes. Their force power was spread thin because they shared it between many. Maybe I'm misinterpreting but that's what I've been given to understand.

That’s because Rian heavily deviated from the story outline that JJ and the original ep9 director wanted and Disney wanted to put everything into Rots that would “please” fans as much as possible. So this is essentially JJ trying to push the story into somewhat the direction he originally intended(Rey’s parents being important, a big evil bad, and Kylo getting redeemed) and Disney enforcing nostalgia bait(like Palpatine being back) in order to “fix” the damage TLJ made to the brand.

Exactly, the dark side rises, and the light to meet it. Palpatine was an accumulation of the Sith, an immense power in the Dark Side. The Light Side spawned Anakin which created the path to the end of Palpatine and that Sith entity. The Skywalkers were human, and struggled to defeat this massive Dark Side power despite their inherit strength in the Force. But in the end, it is through their efforts, that Palpatine is defeated.

Spencer Davis not saying you’re wrong but I’d like to know more of an explanation before I’m convinced that palpatines presence is ironic. At least intentionally ironic.if you’re saying that that’s what Vader was trying to achieve but couldn’t , it was what palatine used to seduce Vader. The irony would have been that palpating couldn’t keep himself alive, in my opinion. But that would be a minor theme of the film and would be open to interpretation. It's really not about having a plan though, not having a solid plan beforehand is not automatically a bad thing, it's totally possible to take it one movie at a time and to simply say "ok, where do we go from here" after each one. It becoming totally disjointed was not inevitable, it only happened because apparently JJ didn't feel the need to actually see what would follow naturally after TLJ, and just randomly did his own thing instead of looking at what would make sense after TLJ, like RJ did after TFA.

I could have dealt with just about everything that bothered me if not for Ben dying and Rey being a Palpatine. I would have loved to see him atone for his actions and perhaps having others reluctantly work with him when necessary, and have him be a Han Solo like Jedi. I also would have preferred Rey not to have been related to anyone in the end and have the rest of that story play out the way that it did. I need to see it again, and see if I feel differently then.

Carrie Fisher's untimely death is partially to blame, but so is just how the script is written around it. I don't think it gels well at all. Vader's turn in RotJ works much better in large part because of things like his and Luke's conversation before meeting with the Emperor and him showing some softening because of his son but still feeling like he's in too deep.

She was alive after Return of the Jedi for sure as shown in the end finale of Rebels. And she was 14 at the start of the Clone Wars, TCW was 3 years, making her 17, there’s a 19 year gap between the end of TCW and ANH making her 36, it’s 4 years to battle of Endor so by ROTJ she’s right around 40 I BELIEVE TFA is 30 years later (might be wrong at that number) and TROS is a year after Last Jedi making her around 71!! This really highlights the whole "art is subjective" thing. I actually agree with most of your gripes (especially the Palpatine stuff, although I still LOVED his scenes, I always hated the whole Palpatine clone storyline), but I loved the movie overall. Probably my favorite of the Sequel Trilogy. Yes, the movie has flaws, but I feel like it does a good job overcoming them to present a really satisfying movie overall. I think TLJ is the black sheep of this trilogy. I think if Disney would have given the whole trilogy to JJ so it could all be a unified story, the trilogy would have been better overall. Or, at least have given Rian Johnson a roadmap instead of just saying "do whatever man". Seeing other people's reviews isn't a bad thing, but make sure to go out, see the movie, and formulate your own opinions as well people. Love hearing your take on the movie though!

"I think if Disney would have given the whole trilogy to JJ so it could all be a unified story, the trilogy would have been better overall. Or, at least have given Rian Johnson a roadmap instead of just saying "do whatever man" " Definitely! That has been my feeling during the last week. It's not that I din't enjoy TLJ, I really liked at the time, but TROS made me like less. Not because it was a bad movie, not because TROS killed what TLJ built, TLJ doesn't have its place in Star Wars saga. If we could get the whole story JJ planned OR an ending Rian Johnson planned, it could have worked. Two movies completely disconnected was such a shame, even though I really liked how the story turned out in the end.

For the question of “what was the actual point of the Skywalkers?”, with the way TROS ended, I believe that the Skywalkers were the inspiration for the Galaxy itself to rise up and finally decide to stand for themselves rather than let an Empire rule for them. This was certainly not explicitly explained, but the way the whole galaxy turns out to fight the Final Order implies this, at least in my opinion. I hope a future book expands on that idea but it would have been nice to see it in the film. Overall I agree with many of your points and also enjoyed the movie as a whole, but I wouldn’t rank it as low and the Palpatine stuff wasn’t a huge deal for me as I thought it was handled much better than in Dark Empire, although not explained well. Thanks for all your content!!!

Yeah, if I had to say, based on one viewing, where this leaves the legacy of the Skywalkers (other than the fact Rey may go on to make her own legacy as a Skywalker), I'd say the Skywalker family is a story of love and redemption against the odds. The fact that Luke and Leia, Han, and Ben ultimately give Rey the love and trust she needs (even as part of the family of their mortal enemy) to turn against darkness is an inspiring legacy. Even at the end of TLJ, this was probably the likely outcome, with Luke being the 'spark of hope'...

After sleeping on it here is my full opinion: TROS... is find. It had some great moments that I love but there wear 3 major issues that made me question JJ and Chris. Maybe Pablo Hidalgo's Visual Dictionary/Cross Section, Rae Carson's novel and Phil Szostak's behind the scenes will change my mind when we get some more information. But for now it's find. I'm glad that a few of my wishes came true like who Rey is and who Snoke was but I was disappointed they didn't address the rest. I could have easily swapped some parts out to put those in or change things for the better. Despite that it didn't "ruin" the franchise for me.

I understand that, but there’s actually quite a few ways I think you Anakin can be the chosen one in canon and still have this movie exist. Here’s two I just imagined on the spot. Anakin is supposed to “bring balance to the force” right? Well that could literally mean anything because that’s so ambiguous. I mean when he “kills” the emperor in ROTJ he did fulfill the prophecy at the time. The prophecy never said that balance would last forever. Or. You could see the chain of events that Anakin put into place in order to bring balance. Example: he saved Luke’s life from the Emperor, and Luke then was able to train Leia, and both were available to train Rey, who finally brought balance to the force.These events would’ve never happened without Vader defending Luke in the throne room.

Kwijiboz There are two things that I like to consider. 1. Was Anakin ever really the chosen one? Qui-Gonn said that he COULD be the one that the prophecy refers to. And then after Obi Wan and Anakin’s fight, Obi Wan says “You WERE the chosen one”. So did Anakin stop being the chosen one after he became Vader? Did he redeem himself as the Chosen One by “killing” Palpatine? 2. He could bring balance to the force indirectly. He had Leia and Leia had Kylo/Ben. He could’ve brought balance to the force by being the seed from which Ben Solo would rise, and along side Rey, kill Palpatine

@@nowelbobke1506 Anakin didn't destroy the Sith and he didn't destroy Palpatine, that was Rey. Not only is Palpatine still alive but he is all the Sith, it should have been Anakin to destroy him once and for all completing the prophecy. the Jedi were wrong about misreading the prophecy. Obi wan says, "With all due respect, Master, is he not the Chosen One? Is he not to destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force?" Mace Windu replys, "So the prophecy says." and lastly Yoda ends with , "A prophecy that misread could have been." They're trying to decide whether or not Anakin is the Chosen one who will bring balance. But if they believe the prophecy was misread and it is not Anakin then they are wrong about misreading the prophecy. George Lucas has stated that Anakin is the Chosen one. The Prophecy is about a singular person not about their lineage. George did not say that the Skywalkers are the chosen ones, he said Anakin. Even if it was the case of lineage then Rey killing Palpatine still doesn't connect with the prophecy. Rey isn't of Skywalker blood, what makes the Skywalkers special (mainly Anakin) is that they have lineage in their family that is the actual Force. Anakin's father was the Force. Rey isn't the ultimate dark being either, that's Palpatine, just because shes related to him doesn't make her more evil than him. Where are you getting Rey rebuilds the Jedi order from? That's not in the movies at all, we never see her with any students, in fact throughout Rise of Skywalkeri shes still a student herself under Leia. Youre just making assumptions, we have no idea what Rey is going to do after episode nine.

Daniel Garcia If it wasn’t for Luke Anakin would not have completed the prophecy he would’ve failed, legacy is a huge theme in Star Wars and I don’t care what Lucas says yes Anakin is the chosen one, but legacy and lineage has always been an important part of Star Wars, even he acknowledges that. And if it wasn’t for the skywalkers failures, and guidance, balance would have never come. In the end the skywalkers maintained balance in the force. Palpatine died, and when he was revived the skywalkers were the only reason he was stopped. I can understand why you’re sad, you want Anakin to be the only 1, but Star Wars has always been about legacy and lineage, and that’s what Disney was going for.

While Rey Palpatine does contradict the message of TLJ, it does bring another interresting one: "You are not defined by your lineage". Rey was "fated" to become empress, but because of her choices (sparing ben etc), she is freed from this fate. It's still a good message, though I would have prefered her to stay a nobody. I also would have kind of liked for Rey to be the one dying and Ben coming back, and having to atone, maybe building back the jedis, now knowing what dark and light are like so he can fully teach them the balance his uncle tried to hard to maintain, plus we could have seen him say "I am Ben Skywalker/Solo". I quite like the mystery box that J.J. left: What did Finn wanted to say to Rey ? That he loves her ? Or maybe (my personal preference) that he wants to be trained to become a jedi (we do see him hold the lightsaber and he does use his instinct a lot). Thematically, that Rey defeats Palpatine only by defending is a very nice callback to Yoda's teaching: "A jedi uses the Force only for defense, never for attack". As attacking would litteraly gives the win to Palpatine. Just by defending she wins and I think it's very nice.

The problem here is that the message for the sequel trilogy wasn't "You are not defined by your lineage" it was "You might be a nobody, but you're a somebody to me" and "You can be a nobody but still become somebody." And yes I know this seems pretty much the same as what you said, but the two are very different because in TFA and TLJ especially the theme was that Rey could be a part of this larger story despite coming from nowhere and being no one. Basically, anybody can become great if they just work hard at it and create strong bonds with others. But the theme of TROS was all about overcoming bloodlines and going against your blood relatives which seems way too GoT for me. Really, Palpatine should have been cooperatively defeated by both Rey and Ben. For Ben because it's Palps who's been manipulating and abusing him since childhood and he tore apart his family. For Rey (if she was NOT a descendant of Palps) because she wants to become a greater person, a greater Jedi, someone who can stand by Ben's side and end the conflict between Palpatine and the Skywalkers. If she had done that, she truly *would* have risen from a nobody to a somebody who earned that title because she co-defeated the greatest threat in the galaxy. But no, now it's all about where she got one of her X chromosomes from.
@ultratankie
@ultratankie 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. The movie still ultimately, and intentionally, rejects the importance of bloodlines and rejects the idea of heritage informing who you necessarily need to be. In that sense, it carries on what The Last Jedi tried to say in some capacity, with the main difference being that there's an in-universe explanation for Rey's natural affinity with the Force. That's the charitable take, at least. For my part, not only do I personally agree with you, it turns my stomach a little that the people who whined about Rey's abilities got legitimized by this movie.

What did the Skywalkers do? They stopped Palpatine. They stopped the Sith. Without Anakin Skywalker being born, Palpatine would have taken over the Senate, destroyed the Jedi, created the Empire and ruled the galaxy for countless millennia. Without Luke Skywalker, Vader never would have turned back to Anakin Skywalker to defeat Palpatine, the Empire would have stayed in place and he would have ruled the galaxy for countless millennia. Without Leia Skywalker, the Rebellion never would have gotten the Death Star plans, the Resistance never would have been created, Ben Solo never would have been born, he would have never flipped back to the light in episode 9 and Palpatine would have ruled the galaxy for countless millennia. Without Ben Solo coming back to fight with her, Rey would have given in to Palpatine's wishes. And he would have ruled the galaxy for countless millennia. Sure Rey struck the final blow, but I believe that without any single member of the Skywalker family, Palpatine would have had unchallenged, unlimited control over the galaxy for who knows how long, and the centuries old war between Jedi and Sith would have ended with the Sith completely victorious. The Skywalkers weren't perfect (Vader). They made a few mistakes along the way (Kylo). They wanted to give up (Luke). But they decided to fight for what was right, time and time again. Sometimes without even using the Force (Leia). They all made a choice to be better. Anakin, Ben, Luke and Leia all sacrificed and redeemed themselves for their past failures. And in the end, they saved the galaxy. That's what they did.

I guess that's what all of Star Wars is about. Redemption. A choice to be better. I mean, Luke, Anakin, Ben, Leia, Han (scoundrel turned hero), Obi-Wan and Yoda (failed Anakin but then taught Luke), Finn (trooper to rebel scum), Poe (barely), heck that's what Revan's character is all about, Bastilla too. There was a pivotal scene about redemption in the recent book Resistance Reborn. Anyway, it's just a great lesson to learn from Star Wars and I'm glad that it's present throughout not just the Original trilogy but almost all of Star Wars.

"the rise of skywalker doesn't feel like a natural progression" that probably sums up my only really major gripes about the movie. i loved it i really did. the action was great, kylo ren/ben solo is fantastic and i would argue that he is the actual main character of the sequel trillogy even if he's not the protagonist. in terms of character arcs a lot of it feels to me like a good natural progression for mainly rey and ben but a lot of other characters as well. and there's honestly a lot to love in this movie, and there is a lot i did love about this movie. but yeah, i feel like the main threat of this movie, palpatine and his fleet, just comes out of nowhere. not shoehorned in to this movie persay, overall its established and built up threw this movie well, but shoehorned in to the final part of the trillogy without properly setting it up beforehand. and because of that the first act of the movie feels very haphazard and rushed to get everything in place. really i wish they didn't mention palpatine in the crawl and just had him introduced in that opening seen with kylo finding him, him being in the crawl feels like you've just read a spoiler. and as stated before the first act of the movie feels very haphazardly put together to get people in their places. i can accept that palpatine has been puppet master-ing events from behind the scenes all this time, and i can accept a fleet of super weapon armed ships. i may not like it in concept and would rather they had done something else, but i can still accept that this is the choices they went with for the movie. and also knowing star wars, there can be comics and books explaining more of palpatines plans and exactly how things got to this exact point. i know that filling in details, big and small, using side stories is bad filmmaking, but its what star was has always done for decades. honestly, i can see people being split on this movie, but not in the same way that people were split on the last jedi. with the last jedi it was mainly a dislike of the developments characters went threw, and that dislike lead to people nitpicking the movie apart and focusing so much on everything they can call bad, even if its just something small or not actually bad. with this movie, it seems more like the people who tend to analyze film structure and plot will have problems with it. because the central threat of this film wasn't set up, leaving the first act, or even you could say the first half of the movie, very messy in its attempts at putting all the pieces in place for its plot. but i can't say the same for the characters. the characters and the arcs they go threw over the trilogy as a whole i feel is what ties the 3 movies together. even if each movie feels somewhat separated from each other. overall, i still really enjoyed the sequel trilogy. kylo ren/ben solo is the best part of it, but i still like all the characters a lot, Poe, Finn, and Rey are all great. i think Rey and Ben make great parallels and foils to each other, and that acts as a central part that holds the 3 movies together. so overall i do actually agree with you on alot of your points, i do not like that palpatine and his fleet of superweapon ships are a thing, but i'm ok with it because of how palpatine works in the context of Ben's story and Rey's story. i noticed some of the contradictions, they didn't ruin the movie for me but i noticed them. (i think it would be interesting if they end up saying that Poe was a spice runner WHILE in the republic navy. i don't know how that would work but him doing that kind of shady stuff while being a solider sounds like it could make for an interesting story. i also like the idea you said of it being Han's medal that was given to chewie.) i didn't have too much of a problem with "Rey Palpatine." the main question it raises is of when did palpatine had a kid, but its not like the timeframe is impossible. just means that Rey's parent was likely in their early 40s when she was born, and palpatines kid would probably have been born in the time between phantom menace and attack of the clones. definitely is one of those things a guidebook would give specific dates to. overall i don't have much of a problem with it, and its good parallel to Ben. i also wish Ben didn't die. i understand why they wrote it that way, i just wish we could tell more stories with him. and really, beyond that i honestly really enjoyed the movie. to address what you were saying at the end of what did the skywalkers do, i'd argue that the sequel trillogy is honestly about legacy. rey's strength in the force is a legacy of her grandfather, and in the end her story was about denying that legacy and taking up another. Ben's story of constant struggle between the dark and light until he finally truely chose his own path as a hero is a good mix of anakin and luke and following their legacies. and in the end there, yes a skywalker didn't defeat palpatine, but the legacy of the skywalkers did. Rey was motivated by stories of luke, partially trained by him, and very much trained by leia. and i've mentioned enough how Ben influenced her and she influenced him. the skywalkers may have made a mess of the galaxy, but all their attempts at cleaning up that mess are what inspired people to do good in the end, their legend lives on even if they themselves are all gone. so yeah, i liked a lot of the movie, but its still very messy and has problems. in general the sequel trilogy definitely had its problems. funnily enough it feels almost inverse of the problems the prequels mainly have. the prequels are poorly acted and poorly made films, though they all follow one coherent storyline and arc. the sequels are very well made as well as having good directing and acting. but they are structurally VERY messy. i still like all these movies though. would probably give this one a 6 or a 7 out of 10. structurally flawed but has some very good parts, still very entertaining and fun.

As I commented elsewhere: "Rian Johnson tried to give the story more meaning and dig into the philosophy of it all, not unlike what George Lucas was planning with his sequels (aside from all that microbiology bs). JJ Abrams only wanted to pew pew pew, and he botched the landing as a result." I agree that TLJ is an actual response to questions set up in TFA. As a result, despite a tonal shift (which should be expected in the given structure) and choices/answers made that not everyone liked or preferred, it does actually feel part of the same story. It was advancing things. TROS tosses that aside and gives us a film that, honestly, doesn't quite feel like it answers even TFA satisfactorily, even though it offers the safest and most obvious answers for everything. I like JJ Abrams as a filmmaker and storyteller, but he did the same thing here that he did with Star Trek Into Darkness. Sadly, for me, both franchises take a hit as a result. And I say that as a fan of both The Force Awakens and Star Trek (2009). Ultimately, I don't think he was the right choice for this.

I feel like you hit the nail on the head with this. Rian Johnson wanted to take the series in a new direction, hence the lack of super weapons and the removal of the big bad disfigured villain. The message that Rey wasn't powerful because of her parents really stood out to me. Because of those messages, TLJ invoked the ire of a lot of fans, but I feel like they were necessary to avoid repeating the same story as the original trilogy and becoming cliché as a result of more deus ex machina moments. IMHO, JJ didn't have an original vision for the trilogy, and they were right to bring someone else in for the second movie, but bringing him back for episode IX was a mistake. Ultimately it wasn't that bad, but I think it could've been so much better.

Her theme music, fighting style, name, why she was on Jakku, her anger and the whole SW vs Palp thing just to name a few hints from earlier episodes. It really ties the whole thing together nicely. So well done to those who picked up the clues early on! 👏

It seems you have never heard the tradegy of Darth Plagueis the wise... Palps literally refrences to what Plagueis could do with the force, and Palpatine finished what Plaguies started. And the yellow lightsaber at the end means in my opinion that the jedi will change. Either go back to the old jedi ways or start from the beginning. This movie was great and saved the mess TLJ left behind. But if this movie feels rushed it is becaouse there was no time gap between 7-8 so thecnically this would be the second movie in the triology imo.

Is it weird that my favorite part of the movie was Poe acting like Finn's jealous boyfriend for so much of the movie? Because it was. Lots of fun, that. The Palatine stuff. Oh boy. I was excited when it came out in the first trailer because hey maybe they'll do something interesting with it. But then they didn't. It just struck a negative cord for me and I ended up frustrated the whole movie. With Leia they did the best they could with what they had and it was better than I expected, but I knew how they did it and I could see the scene from TFA where it was all cut from and that distracted me a bunch. Although I will likely find it funny how Leia is completely calm while everyone around her is panicking in the future. I really wanted to love this movie, but it just made a bad first impression. And that's pretty hard to get over.

The second time I saw it, I was able to let similar frustrations (or first impressions) go, and I loved it a whole lot more. The only thing that still gnaws at me is Rey being a Palpatine. Her arc as a nobody was just so good. Despite that, I have decided that I really, really like The Rise of Skywalker.

I really enjoyed the movie when I saw it. I'm also inclined to agree with most of your points; the action and comedy were good and I liked a lot of the new characters (as well as Ben Solo), but there were some contradictions and crazy (more or less) reveals, a big ol' fleet of planet-killing star destroyers (would've preferred slightly weaker cannons on those), and the comeback of Palpatine seemed a bit forced, though I did enjoy his scenes. Also, the pacing of the film was a little rushed at times although I don't think I had any major problems understanding what was going on, and a part of me would've wanted more of the main characters to die, but whatever. Overall though, the movie was good and I can't wait to see it a second time. Also: I'm not completely sure but I think I saw the Fireball from Star Wars Resistance at one point. It was when the Resistance scrambled their fighters for Exegol, on the left side of the screen rising from the middle of some trees.
