Yeah, it’s just the sequels that people hate. OT is the original, and the prequels had new storylines and villains that people could like. The sequels are just there for Disney to cash in with a really poorly written female lead (Don’t get me wrong I want a good female lead “cough” Ahsoka, Hera, Sabine, ventriss, leia, bastilla Shan, etc. , Rey is just so bad) Prequels were ok but at least they had original plots and characters designs and ideas. I really wish I could love the sequels, :(

@@ThatneGuy-wi8od You mean except for when they let an acclaimed auteur director make a genuinely unique and challenging movie designed to shake up the franchise and introduce new ideas to the mix, and the Internet fanboys collectively lost their shit like never before and STILL won't shut up about how much they hate it after over two years have passed. Seriously, I hate defending Disney here, but what were they supposed to do? They made TFA, which was quite good if not great, and everyone said "Waahhh, it's too much like the OT!" So they let Rian Johnson go with TLJ, making *the* most thematically complicated and game-changing film in the franchise, and everyone said "Waahhh, it changed too much!" So no wonder they had no goddamn idea what the fans wanted from Episode 9. They were trying to please an army of Goldilockses who probably could never have been satisfied.

@@MsMaggyW And the saddest part of all is that if they'd just stuck to their guns and let Trevorrow make his "Duel of the Fates" it would have probably been pretty good - at least - and tied the trilogy together in a cohesive way. Star Wars movies needs to be how we want according to our fan theories even if it doesn’t make sense. Also this is the WORST movie ever. I just have to say respect to you for finding so much to love about a movie you had some issues with. Seriously, with all the negativity that's going around, seeing a video like this is honestly so refreshing and I can't help but appreciate that. I liked a lot about the movie, even though it went completely against what I hoped for. Exegol was such a cool location, it was very ominious and both scenes where Rey and Kylo make their ways to Sidious were so creepy and tense. Palpatine himself was fantastic, he just sent chills down my spine and the atmosphere of his scenes were just terrifying. Ian McDiarmid really nailed the performance and I'm just happy that his return was handled much more seriously this time around. There were catches attached, he was literally a talking corpse, he did not come back unscathed. And the way he mirrored his own death and cursed the Skywalker line was great. Yeah it sucks to see Ben getting thrown down a hole but that kind of poetic vengence is so fitting for Darth Sidious. The scene with the Force lightning storm was a big WHOA moment but it makes sense; he's on the Sith homeworld where his dark side powers would be amplified, like Ahch To and Force ghosts which is what allows Luke and Yoda to interact with the physical world. Everything with Leia was just perfect, I teared up watching those scenes. It looked so good I almost forgot it was all archieved footage. I loved the fact that she trained Rey after Crait and was overjoyed to learn that she actually did do full on Jedi training with Luke, even building her own lightsaber and that we got to see a glimpse of it. Her passing was also so selfless, so graceful, so fitting for Leia. Which brings me to Ben's redemption. I didn't want it to happen. I wanted him to stay and die on the dark side but it was executed so beautifully that I am more than accepting of it. C-3PO willingly sacrificing his memory for the greater good was hands down one of the best moments for the character. Lando was fantastic, of course he was. Billy D's still got the magic and seeing him and Chewie fly the Falcon was great. Like he's almost 80 years old at this point and he's still getting in the action. Luke's scene with Rey is already one of my favourite Force Ghost scenes, it really shows the progression of his character and gives a good lesson for Rey (or anyone for that matter) who has issues with family. That first line about a Jedi's weapon was PERFECTLY executed by Mark Hamill. But my absolute favourite part of TROS was the Jedi Voices scene. For me it was the moment that brought the prequel, original and sequel trilogies together and I love it. I was so emotional hearing the Jedi of old talking directly to Rey and surprised to hear not just the obvious ones; Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Qui-Gon, but also Ahsoka, Aayla Secura, Kanan, Jedi who were not front and centre in the movies or even from other media. It just really gave this sense of solidarity for all of these characters inspiring Rey to take down Darth Sidious.

A note on Kylo Ren's rebuilt mask: It's a direct visual reference to the "Kintsugi" style of Buddhist pottery, in which a pot is finished, then *smashed,* and then glued back together with a bright gold glue. It represents change over time, and how one's flaws are actually what defines them. So it's INCREDIBLY appropriate for this movie, reflecting Ren's shattered psyche and how that fuels his overall drive to find his personal identity. It's definitely a win and quite possibly the smartest bit of production design in the entire film.

The trailer showed Chewie in the Falcon with Lando, but the trailer for Rogue One also showed Jyn facing down a TIE Fighter. I loved how Poe and Rey bicker and Finn's exasperated look and just the overall energy they had. 2) The bound between Rey and Ben/Kylo. I have always loved their bound and how they are two sides of the coin. While Kylo has struggled with the pull to the Light, Rey struggles with the pull to the dark. I wish that Ben solo didn't have to die to find redemption, but That is me. 3) I LOVED the fact that Chewie got his damn medal. I had always thought Chewie had been robbed. and after losing all his friends, he gets the recantation he deserves. 4) I liked the redesign of Kylo Ren's mask... not much more to say. 5) this line of diolouge: "I AM THE SPY!" "...WHAT?!" 6) The handleing of Leia's passing. I thought, with what they had to work with...our princess, a woman of hope, gave her life in the hope she could finally reach out to her son..and she did. 7) the conversation between Han and Ben. the moment he said "Dad." Having recently rewatched it also looking for good things, I see where Alex is coming from here. TROS actually gets a whole lot right at the micro level. Its detail work is frequently great. But it falls down when it comes to all the big-picture storytelling stuff, and that's the problem. The character motivations are terrible, the plot twists don't land, the emotional moments generally hit with a splat. It's kind of unsettling, really, how well-directed individual scenes can be within a narrative that is so terribly constructed. Also, my list of wins is almost identical to his. Which is kinda funny.

The only exception would be situations where the studio\producer takes the project away from the director.

I enjoyed TRoS. It was a great film that I felt was a great send-off to the Skywalker Saga. Honestly I only have a few minor complaints. I wish we got more of Rey and Ben together. But I do love the scene where Ben saves her. It immediately reminded me of Darth Plagueis. I totally hated that the Emperor was back. However, his scenes were awesome. While I'm upset he didn't come back sooner, I'm glad Billy Dee came back to play Lando. I absolutely love the fact that Luke had started to train Leia. It makes her powers in The Last Jedi a bit more believable. While I'm upset that we did hear Ahsoka's voice in the voices of the past Jedi, I'm actually pretty surprised we didn't hear Ezra. I'm guessing he's still alive. I love seeing the wreckage of the second Death Star. Seeing those old stormtrooper helmets was an awesome moment and reminded me a bit of the Clone Trooper memorial things in Jedi: Fallen Order (Also please do a lore-play for Fallen Order). I love Rey's new yellow lightsaber. Maybe she'll study both sides of the Force and teach the future Jedi in both sides like Mace Windu. I understand that me liking Rise of Skywalker is a very controversial opinion. But it's an opinion that I am glad to have.

Thanks for this! The thing about redemption people often miss: When dealing with human justice systems, you can't know what's truly deep in a person's heart/character. But when it comes to the Force (or God etc), these have to do with cosmic consequences, which ARE directly based on the true inner character of the person without guesswork. So, in human justice (at its best) we are trying to transform an individual through consequences, conditioning, counseling, time, etc. MOST of the time, a real transformation takes lots of time, after which we often allow a person to 'turn themselves around'. It very rarely happens quickly. BUT, it probably does, in very rare cases, happen quickly through major epiphany and breakthroughs. But human justice we can't acknowledge it because it's so rare and we have no ability to see into their 'soul' with perfection. But, with any system truly based on their actual personhood with perfection, sudden transformation could follow with treatment in accord with their new character.

I'm a positive thinking person, and I like most movies I see, just because I concentrate more on the positive aspects than on the negative ones. And it's the same with this movie. I didn't like how Palpatine was brought back, but retrospectively I feel it provided a bracket for all 3 Trilogies. 3 generations of Skywalkers were faced with him. Only the middle one was able to not be seduced by him. And the 3rd generation almost ruined what the ones before had achived. In the end, Rey had all generations of the Skywalkers in her when she defeated him. She was trained by Luke & Leia, she had the life force of Ben, and all the old Jedi (I think that included Anakin?) gave her strength. So all the 3 generations of Skywalkers had their bit in defeating Palpatine for good. And his defeat gave rise to a new Skywalker. And Rey is a Skywalker, because she lives with Bens life force. He is part of her now. I loved that. I like how you don't let the thinks you disliked about this movie get in the way of enjoying things you like about it. It does have its weaknesses, but it does have strengths as well.

Thank you for this! RoS is one of my favourite Star Wars films, and taking cues from CinemaWins is always a... erm, win. One thing I really love especially in TLJ and RoS is Rey's *consistency* in never really being tempted to join Kylo or the dark side; she gets a bit aggressive/dark a couple times, but never *consciously* is tempted whatsoever. Two moments that really stand out to me is after the fight with Snoke's guards when Kylo starts his speech about them ruling the galaxy and she says "Don't do this, Ben" over top of him, along with the moment mentioned here in RoS about vowing to kill Palpatine. That resolution and confidence to simply be good, even if some of her actions lean dark reminds me of RotJ era Luke, and it's why Rey and RotJ (and sequel) Luke are two of my favourite characters in Star Wars.

In my opinion, I rank it 1. Rogue One (great. Probably my most rewatched Star Wars movie aside from ANH and RotS) 2. Rise of Skywalker (decent although disappointing for the final episode. Great character moments though which is why I think it’s second best of the Disney movies) 3. Solo (it’s alright but a bit boring at times) 4. Force Awakens (don’t really feel a need to revisit it but it’s not necessarily bad) 5. Last Jedi (not a fan but I get why people like it. Just not for me)

It's really easy to pick apart Star Wars movies, ANY Star Wars movie, I think if you truly love the series, maybe take a second to think about everything you loved/liked about every film. It may not make you suddenly enjoy a film you disliked, but it may at least give perspective and allow you to respect those that do.

Re: "Force Heaven" One thing that might be helpful in smoothing that out is to keep in mind that while there are some Christian concepts in Star Wars (Virgin Birth, Chosen One prophecies, and some others), the "afterlife" concept that we see in Star Wars has more to do with Buddhism than Christianity. So in some versions of Mahayana Buddhism, there are these beings called Bodhisattvas, who essentially have almost achieved ultimate enlightenment, but instead choose to delay complete enlightenment (becoming one with the cosmic force?) and stick around to help other beings on their path towards enlightenment. I think that rather than thinking of Force Ghosts as "going to heaven," it might make more sense to think of them as sacrificing "Nirvana" in order to remain in the world and offer guidance to others. I think that makes more sense than using a more western concept of "heaven." I'm not a Buddhist and my knowledge of Buddhism is introductory at best so if I've misrepresented or completely missed the point in what I wrote above, my apologies.
@Hypershell
@Hypershell 4 жыл бұрын
That actually makes some level of sense. IIRC some new canon books describe "leaving" the Force to be a Force Ghost as less than pleasant for the person doing it, so that would seemingly fit the Buddhism inspiration (though I am no expert on that religion either, but your description sounds familiar). With that said, even if we assume Christian inspiration, discussion of "deserving redemption" is an utterly meaningless one in Christian context. Christian redemption is not earned, it is given as a gift, based on the premise that literally nobody actually deserves it. Saint Paul was a murderer before he converted, and became both an Apostle and one of the earliest evangelists, so the notion that "repent, and be saved" does not apply to murder is a direct contradiction to the Christian faith. Even ignoring all of that and looking solely at Star Wars lore, Anakin betrayed and slaughtered a bunch of kids who trusted him as essentially a big brother, before he assaulted his own wife and embraced two decades of evil living. There's an argument to be made that Kylo never truly sunk to Vader's level. He certainly wasn't able to ignore his inner conflict over his actions for nearly as long as Vader did.
@andrewjenkins9965
@andrewjenkins9965 4 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Though from what I can tell from Jedi philosophy, there is no reincarnation, meaning all living things essentially go into "Nirvana" upon death. But like you said, Force Ghosts basically forego that release back into the Force, and retain their identities for the sake of the living. Like Qui-Gon coming to Yoda, or Obi-Wan and Yoda both helping Luke after their deaths, or Luke helping Rey. Which is also why the climax to the movie is so weird to me. It's a secret that only a few Jedi knew, so why are all the Jedi there? That's... confusing. (Also I'm really curious why Ahsoka was there, did she offer to help Luke rebuild the Order and take the Jedi mantle again? Or was it just all Light-Siders? Is this in the novelization somewhere that I should be reading?)

@@Hypershell Christ's Atonement is a free gift to allow the possibility of being saved, but some Christian faiths believe in both faith and works still being necessary to go to heaven. In Paul's case, he served the early Christian Church faithfully for decades after his conversion. Plus, it's very questionable if he ever committed murder in the first place (not that some murderers can't still be redeemed), since he truly believed he was arresting people guilty of blasphemy, only realizing after his vision that they weren't blasphemers after all.

Hydra Dude maybe that was the case before the battle of Endor, but in the Mandalorian, we see troopers fail epically while practicing as a gag. I get that they weren’t trying to kill luke during the Death Star fight and that the Ewoks were an unknown quantity for them, but Finn isn’t an imperial stormtrooper, and I don’t recall the sequel trilogy giving the stormtroopers strategic reasons not to kill Poe, Finn, Han, Rey, etc.

Thanks for seeing the positive in TROS. I liked Rey's story. I like that we got a female heroine who was vulnerable and not masculinized or sexualized. I like that a Palpatine balanced the darkness with light and then "became" a Skywalker. I loved Ben's redemption and that the door is open for Rey to find him perhaps in the World Between Worlds. Overall, the movie wasn't perfect, but I liked it.
