I just found you on KZbin and I started to binge watch all your previous episodes. I too am a Palawan and I'm learning so much and I can't thank you enough for all the insight that you are providing. In my early years I had so many carded Star War figures but unfortunately I got rid of them so I was hoping to reconnect to my youth and start collecting them all over but to my dismay I didn't realize the price of these pieces so I've decided to collect the lose figures instead. I want to thank you again for the content of your videos, which I'm learning so much in order to be a smart buyer. 😊

Great show. I love the story behind the bootlegs. When I was a kid we traveled to El Paso, where I now live, so we went over the border for cheaper food and merchandise. We were very poor as I was growing up and was a necessary. So I had a few bootleg Mexican figures. I wish I still had them, as they were very special to me. Unfortunately they were lost with some other toys in a move. Thanks for taking me back. Cheers

There's definitely enough out there that you could do another episode or two on Bootlegs should you choose. Always a fun & interesting topic for me. @acrodave92872 жыл бұрын
Hi, Joey! The Galaxy Wars figures were around in the late 90's. They were what you'd call Rack Toys and you could get them from markets and cheap £ shops (thrift stores?) They were taken from the Power of the Force 2 and Shadows of the Empire Kenner lines, and they were recognizable by being twice the size of the legit figures, with a plain card back. They are made of solid plastic rather than the cheaper hollow knockoffs. Good for curiosities in anyone's collection!🤔👍

In Turkiye, Star Wars toys WERE actually licensed in 1985 for the first time, but never produced and rather imported with high tariffs. From what I can remember, a single 3.25” Kenner toy would sell for about $20 when converted, which was too high for most families. The bootlegs appeared actually AFTER the toys were licensed, in 1986, probably as a reaction to the high prices of the originals. I remember then the actual importer company distributing leaflets warning people about these bootlegs as well as starting a promotion to fight them off: if you’d cut out the names on the packages of the originals and bring three of them to any store, you could get any original figure you wanted for free. I actually remember the clerk checking the backs of the name cutouts to ensure they were not cut from bootlegs. Never bought a bootleg though I remember they were everywhere, including legitimate toy stores. If I only knew back then…😊

I agree. A bootleg I would consider something illegally produced. Like bootleg vhs tapes in the 80s. (such a fun decade). I don't put a lot of figures, in the "variant" catagory. I think that is thrown around to make money. A variant, to me, is a repaint or a diffrent head sculpt or retooling, of an existing figure. (think mcfarlane Spawn v1, there is masked and hambergerhead versions). Some of these star wars variants I would say are more of a defect as oppossed to variant. Dark legs, big heads, small hands or whatever else is out there. Tales of the bounty Hunter book is my favorite, of all the expanded universe books.
@thepadawancollectorofficial2 жыл бұрын

Hi Joey, I’m almost sure one of the Droids or Ewoks characters had the 4 LOM blaster rifle as well. I think the fat white dude. Also, Mexico had bootlegs as well as the license for Lili Ledy Star Wars figures. I mention that as u said u considered bootlegs to be from countries that didn’t have the license to produce the figures officially. Let me know what ur thinking…
@thepadawancollectorofficial2 жыл бұрын
Yea it’s hard to say about Mexico because the figures weren’t distributed equally among the country like over here in the USA. I have read about that and how figures weren’t readily available but bootlegs were. Plus they were cheaper, so there’s that too. So although I would rather collect bootlegs that were produced in countries that had zero licenses or distribution, I realize that there are countries that had bootlegs because of LACK of wide distribution to every market in that country.

I respectfully disagree with your opinion of what a bootleg piece is. For most long-time bootleg collectors (like myself), Both knock-offs and Bootlegs were exclusives from the early 80s to the mid-90s, regardless of whether they were manufactured in countries who possessed official distribution of Star Wars merchandise (like Mexico) or not. That adjective/terminology ends there to distinguish them from the rest of modern pieces. From that period onwards, they are only REPLICAS to deceive and satisfy the demands of some collectors like the Star Warsiors portrayed in this video. The production of such pieces, as the one shown here in this video, was never done with the intention of deception or to satisfy a certain market, but rather to exploit a brand or cover less privileged pockets. Everything modern is nothing more than an advantageous inspiration of that era. Beautiful video thou, it was nice that you mentioned about the iron curtain forcing manufacturers to create many of these considered treasures in today´s market.
