I can't thank you enough for the video. I always wanted one as a kid as I was 5 years old when it came out. My buddy down the street had one I never did until now. Recently added a "non-working" one to my collection and hoped I could take it apart and get it working like I did my Imperial Troop Transport. Problem was when I got it apart everything was pristine no corrosion or anything, nothing miss aligned at all. The "licks" was the trick, luckily mine didn't take near as many and I would never had figured that out without this video. I was already searching for vintage kenner motors on ebay. Again, can't thank you enough, I would have been happy just having a non working unit in great condition, but working yea that's a whole different level!

I hear ya'! I never got to own an original Han Solo DL-44 or a Stormtrooper E-11 in their black paint versions. Later on, I did manage to get them in a 90's rerelease, but Han's pistol was orange, and the Stormtrooper rifle was white...however, they both had digital sounds from the movies instead of the whirring little engine sounds found on the vintages.

RE: hand spinning the motor. I learned several years back that if you drop a drop of sewing machine oil (found in the sewing section at Wal-Mart or what have you) into the motor that it really loosens up everything and helps get those old motors spinning again. You may want to consider trying it out.

I had the same problem lol. I'm about to buy one that's all orange for $15 from a website. I'm a model kit fiend, so I'm using my paint skills to repaint it. Google "Han Solo blaster toy repaint" and you'll see the possibilities. Not a vintage one, but my inner child will still be happy.

I have a question. I just acquired an original Star Wars version with the black knobs. In watching your video, i noticed that while your pistol has the screws on the side facing left (without the battery cover), mine has them on the battery side. Strange that they would make an alternate version of the gun, unless there was possibly some reason in manufacturing them. Any idea why? Also, what i bought as a "non functioning" gun, was easily fixed with your motor spin trick. Worked like a charm!

I had one of these, back in the days before anything slightly resembling a firearm had to be eyesearing orange or a completely nonthreatening cerulean blue... It's also interesting to note that even though the sound it's making is correct to how it always sounded it now sounds more like electronics about to die than any sort of laser or blaster.

Great vid, I'm 44 and i dreamed so many times about this blaster has a kid, i was fortunate to get my hands on one for the first time in 1995 when they rereleased it. I still loved the original ones but honestly, they really sounded like shit. The motor was a good idea in 1977, but it only really sounded like a big buzzer. Doesnt even come close to a blaster sound if you ask me. But i agree the color and the model we're great back in the days. My hope is that they release a new 1:1 han's blaster fully detailed today but they prefer to throw out those ugly nerf versions, with the wrong scale, bad details and which looks nothing like the orignals. What a Shame ! The originals still holds a special place in my heart even today.

I still have mine. I got it for Christmas in 1978...the original version. I played with it endlessly. My son, who is now 21, played with it. I wouldn't let him KEEP it! But he got to play with it. It has survived and will survive for my grandchild (if and when I have one). After all that...it is only missing one knob! A battery leaked years ago when I went to college and left it at home in my closet...so the motor hasn't worked since 1990...but I bet I can fix it.

Once again @retroblasting , with the help of your videos, my Star Wars 1977 DL-44 has risen from frozen motor land, and with a little adjustment and cleaning to one of the connector plates, she sounds just like I remember as a kid. Mine is just like yours, the v1 that's all black/dark grey, Star Wars logo stickers, and black knobs. Thank you so much for continuing to share your knowledge that helps us restore our prized vintage toys!

I bought my Han Solo / Luke Skywalker Laser Pistol in 1980. It came in the Empire Strikes Back packaging and I removed the stickers off of it because ... you know ... realism. Heheh. Anyway, that blaster (erm laser pistol) was so cool to play with in the woods with my friends. Lots of good memories. Then later, when the West End Games Star Wars RPG came out, I would use the blaster (laser pistol) as a prop. Some funny looks, but still lots of fun. Today, it gathers dust on a bookshelf. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything :)

Wow ! Im from the UK and im sure I had one of the first empire versions like the one you restored because it did not have red buttons and I would of got it around 81. Mine looked a lot like your pistol in the end because I left it out in the rain one night and it went rusty and stopped working. No idea where it went, probably was chucked during a house move. It was, without a doubt, my favourite toy for quite a few years and even the kid next door, who had everything, didn't have a laser pistol like mine ...hah ! I also remember an "incident" with my "best friend" at the time where he tried to steal it from me and hit me on the head with a rock. Sweet memories hey !
