I just realized that Sans is canonically the older brother and Papyrus the younger. Here they seem to represent younger and older versions of Gaster which is interesting. Young Gaster did not want to fight anyone or kill anyone. He was kind and innocent, much like Papyrus. Older Gaster was more defensive and calloused; willing to do what it took to free the Underground as well as being tired and numb - much like Sans. Brilliant writing really.

I love how gaster constantly underestimates what Sans and Papyrus can do. We all know off course that sans draws power from Karma, which in theory makes gaster the perfect target for him.

I just realised that the reason gaster is the only one who ended up in the void was because sans and papyrus are parts of him and since they still exist gaster didn't get erased completely and ended up in the void, all the other employees got erased completely and aren't stuck in the void because they were entirely erased and probably died while gaster got stuck in a limbo state.

It's easy to pick out problems, and easy to find the negative things in the world, but it takes true intellect to find something to live for and something to hope for. Sans is strong enough to take everything, every timeline, every blow and scathing insult... with a smile. He's strong enough to stand against Chara until most players give up and take the pacifist route. He's strong enough to make jokes in the face of defeat, and even in the face of his own death. Sans and Papyrus are the strongest and smartest monsters in the whole underground, but there's no proving it to someone who doesn't even recognize their humanity.

The blue magic lesson shows how powerful and dangerous it truly is. Gaster did that because even Sans can critically injure or kill him if he attacked using blue magic with some mastery. We can also see that Sans is much better at using it in Undertale’s genocide fight. Being more flexible and aggressive with it. Then there’s that part at the end of the fight where the soul is hitting the walls four times per second.

Watching this again in 2023 and I must admit this is still my favorite storyline and version of Gaster's character. Morally grey, and willing to do anything to free his kind from the entrapments of the barrier, and from the underground tomb they've been trapped in for so long.

It's been years since this came out, but I really love the voice acting in this. Especially faster towards the end. You can really feel how it's a man on his last string, so tired from fighting between his own morality and constantly being forced to confront his past self and how those events changed him into who he is now. The monster he's become and the numbness he feels from fighting that battle for so long. Torturing and hurting what's basically 2 versions of himself over and over for the sake of everyone he cares about. At the end, he has accepted that no one will love him for what he's done and that maybe no know one will remeber him and he pushed through but he lost the reason why, just doing it because going back is too hard. Everytime he sees others, it feels like forced happiness to see them, like it's all an act, which it is and that's why I love proformance so much. It perfectly captures what I imagine faster to be, cold, calculated, and so numb to kindness but you can tell there was once a good person buried in there by the countless horrors he's committed. 10/10 voice acting. Not to say the other's weren't great, but gaster kinda steals the show for me.
