I remembered this game existed with Husky's Bronze League Heroes and now watching it again lol. I'm appreciating it all over again. Crazy how there's no Starcraft 3 yet. Is that like a marketing decision to keep everyone on the classic baseline?

I reckon there's more to it. It takes time to schedule matches. They also wouldn't want to play conventionally, as opponents would have more to study and thus lower their chances of winning the bigger stuff. So they could just sign up and play casually, right? Well, then they might not win, making the time investment even less worthwhile, and last but not least: it would lower their signup/winrate ratio, which would (in theory) make them less attractive for sponsors. All in all I think it's just not worth it. But I agree with you, if that's one of the reasons they don't do it. 🙂

@@IAmBael I believe Serral would still be fine though he plays almost the same every game, every possible cheese he has experience dealing with and he has very aggressive scouting so it's pretty hard to catch him off guard. I feel people like Reynor or Rogue will perform worse since they aren't as mechanically clean as Serral and since a lot of their playstyle is focused around studying and beating other top pros they occasionally lose to players that might be considered worse than them.

@LowkoTV, I don't think the siege tank queue in game #2 was not a bug. My guess is Maru put his factories too close together and since siege tanks are thiccc there was no exit spot available for them to spawn.

Serral doesn't make top level starcraft look boring. It's his opponents who make it look boring by losing too easily, when they're a lower calibre player than Maru. When he's playing against someone like Maru, Serral's games are hella spicy

The thing you said about Starcraft 2 not necessarily being fun to play, but definitely fun to watch - I've heard that years ago shortly after Legacy of the Void came out with regards to the game being designed that way. A lot of units lend themselves to "big" plays like that - splash damage units that can kill or cripple armies in one shot, and/or base raiding units that can wipe out a mineral line in seconds. Not only it is really cool to see, but it's really hard to play against - against an opponent who isn't able to micro against it, units like Disruptors and Infestors can win you the game, it takes less effort to fire a Purification Nova or a Fungal Growth than it does to avoid it. Or you'll lose a dozen workers to a single transport drop or an Adept or Hellion run-by. That's why all the top-tier players have such great splits and can defend base raids so effectively, they HAD to learn how to do that in order to come this far. So at lower level play, players are going to see their armies obliterated and economies decimated with ease, and will cry "OP!" and lose interest. But at the top-tier play, the pros know how to deal with that stuff, and we know they know how to deal with it and it takes a lot of skill and practice. Thus, seeing an Infestor Neural Parasite a Ghost and EMP all its friends is awesome because normally players are good enough to not let that happen, AND seeing the Terran player stop them before they can do it is also awesome because it proves they ARE good enough to not let it happen. It may not be easy to play, but it creates a spectacle of epic action to watch.

The sheer amount of micro required turns me off from playing sc2, but it's still a blast to watch. I play games for fun - needing to constantly bounce around and micro every unit all of the time is way more effort than I'm willing to try and get good at. So instead i'll occasionally watch lowko do something like this to get my fix for the game.

In game 2, Maru had a tank stuck in the factory for Iike 10 minutes, until he eventually found out what happened and lifted the barrack above the factory to allow the tank out at 39:36.

Regarding ranking, Team Fortress 2 Jump servers have an unofficial ranking system that displays skill level difference a bit better: something like 90% of people have the rank of Peon and the 9% have the rank of Peasant1-5. Of remaining 1% vast majority have the rank of Phlebean1-5. On the top though its far more interesting: top 1 have the rank of Emperor, second one have the rank of Archdeacon, then there are several counts, then number of barons, then knights1-5, then jester1-5. Player at rank of 200-300 are all jesters. Maybe I missed some nobility titles but you got the point. Such ranking system represent skill difference between the players FAR better than any equal population distribution between the leagues would do =)

Great game. I am just little sad that you don't understand the mind games better. For example in game nr. 2 Serral delays the ling speed so that Maru would think that he goes roaches again. Maru knows when normal ling speed kicks in. So Serral forced him into defensive play believing its roaches again, Maru started banshee as defense. Serral knew he is not going to be attacked so he went for OV speed and immediately when Maru saw it, cancels banshee and goes viking. Very interesting mind games and I am sad Lowko doesn't mention it.

Too speculative. Clearly there are high level mind games going on, but with players of this caliber it's not as simple as just "delayed to throw him off", that's just one of the factors that went into making the plays they make.

Zerg is the easiest to play? Zerg has to worry about spreading creep, upgrades, deciding if to make Corruptors or Hydras, Ghosts, HAS TO SCOUT and the biggest problem of all is worrying about spending larvae on drones or making units. The other races can make units and workers at the same time. Zerg has to find the balance. You’re basing Zerg off of a Serral game that’s pretty stupid

For me it's starcraft and counter-strike. The two oldest competitive games still holding the top spots. Cs had a bit of struggles going from 1.6 to an upgraded version worthy of the name. Once the guys who made the original came through to design a new modern version they hit it out the park. I can't put them in same category entirely since one is team oriented and one is solo. Rts vs fps. Both high action/fast paced. So imo it's them and then everyone else fighting for the scraps lol

Its nice seeing 2 #1's fighting it out for the number 1 spot! A treat! But it kinda looked like Maru lost some steam in that last fight. Like round 1, he seemed a bit to distracted maybe, making mistakes he does not make too often, and I think its the voice in his head that ultimately lost him this series. Exactly why we don't see them going at each other often. Too many people pay attention. 2nd place is last when you compete with the top spot.
