Beeeeccaaaaaauuusee it is called depth in design. Instead of just turning SC into WC and making the Protoss generic paladins, they were their own bizarre, mystical alien race with fantastic lore. Some of which was definitely not borrowed from the Silmarillion. SC2 made everything generic, boring and Warcrafty. It lost all of its bite, glory, beauty, wonder and shiz.

Why didn't they just keep the sound quotes from the first StarCraft? I wouldn't have cared. The High Templar sounded so much more badass in the first one. The StarCraft 2 High Templar sounds like a pompous scholar or something.

probably in order to humanize them more than they already did with these voices from the original, which is arguably the stupidest idea of all time.. This is attributed to musical semantics. Each sound gives you a piece of information that you explain and describe to yourself when you hear it, like this voice here. That's what I get more or less, the voice makes them sound human like, but only to a bare minimum necessary to make them comprehensible, because the rest sounds very alien and different from what humans' voices normally sound like. This next point is more of a shot in the dark, since I haven't talked with any of the sound designers from the game in like, Ever, but I can tell from what I felt that it this process must have been very with creating such a convincing sound effect for a voice. It would seem as though you have to mix in just enough of a human element, but also keep in mind that you need the rest of the alien element to mesh in together and make the delivery convincing enough. However, despite that, it also needs to have a spark that clicks on the listener, because just having the right mix isn't enough, it needs to also be Interesting and impress the listener in some way. This is what I feel is the difference between most of the voice effects done in StarCraft 1 and StarCraft 2. The ones in StarCraft ones are not only a mix that makes it convincing, it also makes them very interesting and impressing, while StarCraft 2 seemed to only have focused in making them more convincing in how human-like they sound, which made them far less interesting as a result.

@GeneralSpy I really like it the way they look here, its so eerie and shows they stand on a much higher rank than any other protoss just by looking at their portraits. As for the Dark Templar, well.. they're ninjas basically, kind of stupid when you compare them to these awesome guys :P they could have used something like, some psionic powers that the High Templars have (hence the name, Dark Templars.. would have made a lot more sense)

Eh, guys, come on. The voices in the original Starcraft perfectly work in this dark world, where Zerg swarm over planets, and Protoss fight each other - they are all dead serious with some addition of dark humor(ah, my sweet dragoons and templars ;_; ), and on the verge of breaking from all the strain. Starcraft 2 is much more optimistic and clean - Overmind is ded, terrans revolutioning, Kerrigan kills Mengsk, yadda yadaa. I prefer the old voices, but the new ones work in the new universe.
