Little story time, please bare with me : I remember almost everything on that night: I went to see a dear friend at his house, and he had recently bought a bought copy of the game, after dinner, it must have been around 21h, it was already dark and getting cold & foggy outside ... We jumped into the Vanilla SC zerg campaign...and during the very first mission we were trying to figure what each of these weird creepy insectoid/reptilian aliens units did, cost, were built, etc... At which point, I remember my friend kept selecting the freshly hatched hydras to see if they had any hidden features or whatever.... and then 0:17 .....upon hearing that for the first time on his dolby surround ...in a dark room...Needless to say it was truly terryfing....hence why I still remember it to this day....I remember so well our nervous laugh and faces after that sound...ahhh I treasure these simple yet precious memories ! Thank you to all who had the patience and curiosity to read through the whole rambling of this 30 years old dad xD !

I can understand what you're saying. As a kid I played starcraft on the N64 and the PC. But I remember mostly completing almost the entire campaign on the N64. And the mission briefing was kind of scary and some of the missions were definitely unnerving as a kid. One of the best games ever made and I don't think anything will ever top it when it comes to RTS.

For the record, hydras don't spit acid. They lift flaps on their shoulder area and project bone spines. The green projectiles they shot in SC1 were used for the sake of visibility (brown spine against the brown/grey backdrop of most SC1 tile sets = invisible).

Nutella150 actually they shoot needle spines in Broodwar too the difference is that those needles is covered by acid, because it come from inside their body, which make more sense than a simply needles without nothing...

They do in fact spit. They melt thousands of tiny needles they have located on their body into a saliva like substance and spit on their foes. So it's like swarm of razor sharp needles comming at you in a high velocity. That means pain.

because they do got better sounds. sc2 is typical run of the mill scifi sounds. sure the audio quality might be “better” but they have been stripped of creativity in order to please a larger wider base 🎃
