It's quite amazing how many compositions there are. And glad to see homage to ling bane styles and marine tank pushes. They've definitely maintained the army movement aspect of RTS. It's funny how there were several games that ended up in a base trade and the pace of the game slows all the way back down after they both go from 4 bases to 1 base. That happens sometimes in SC2 too! And all within less than 10 min per game. They weren't joking when they said they distilled this particular aspect out of RTS.

This is fantastic from a competitive perspective because you can get a best of 5 very quickly which will reward the best mechanical players. And since the matches are short (and action packed), the audience will be invested throughout the whole game. What a great idea for an RTS

Yeah, this is also an easier barrier of entry because some players don't like managing base building.
@ryder86464 ай бұрын
@@nylekess not sure about that, because the base building is the easiest part so now new players may just find that there's nothing they're good at rather than "at least I can focus on my macro"

@@ryder8646 I don't play SC2 because of the barrier for entry (though I love watching it). I'm quite excited for this game because I enjoy micro but really struggle with macro. Usually I'd lose by not building stuff fast enough or in the right order. However I don't think this game will take off competitively, it is too simple. I think they should have kept base building elements, but simplified them - as opposed to outright removing them.

Can't wait for more spectator tools to help you tell the story. Seeing income dip when workers die really helps give an idea of how impactful good moves are, right now it's like "they got three workers! yay? I think?" Also hope they reduce the amount of dynamic color on each unit, I think that's why the units all end up feeling very "same," despite having very diverse silhouettes, the large amount of team color on each unit can kinda turn them into red and green Christmas blobs.

The good: Very watchable, distinctive units, good capacity to control, short games. The bad: Locked into compositions for a game. That will hurt balance a lot, especially wherever the designers don't focus. At high tier, units gain power through micro, so a unit balanced for low tier will be overpowered in high tier, or completely useless in high tier. If they balance for low tier players, high tier players will hate the poor balance. If they balance for high tier players, low tier players won't want to play because they will see units as overpowered. I reckon you should get 3 basic units. 2 ground and 1 anti-air with maybe 1 more high tier unit just to keep the cards pretty. At low tier, you can pick a unit to counter the counter to your unit. At high tier, you get extra micro potential.

@BadConeja4 ай бұрын
I think the competitive scene would benefit from a larger scale increase. Give pros the space to explore and master a new format. ~ 10+ bases: initial spawns close and expansions further out and away from the opponent (safer). Could start with two bases, home base far and first base very close to opponents first. If the game goes past a short rush, it scales and still gives the aggressive player a chance to still fight. 3+ fronts to fight on with multiple armies or defense locations. Overly massed units do not seem too effective, so it’s better to flank or fight in multiple locations. Lots of units to fight with that is visually engaging for an audience. Like over 100-200 units per player in 3-4 army groups. Increased base count also makes losing 1-2 not as of a power swing. However, the game can still be balanced around a shorter time execution. Maybe the larger scale needs 15-20 minutes.
@Habib_Osman4 ай бұрын
Multiple fronts is terrible for viewing. And the viewing experience is the number 1 aspect an esport needs.. no viewers, no sponsors, no money. So.. it needs to start with 1 base, and games should remain short imo.
@Habib_Osman4 ай бұрын
And the more units on the screen, the less distinctive they are. Imagine if Collossi would be massed in the hundreds, suddenly they wouldn't be cool anymore. So.. scale is a tough nut to crack.. imo, its the lesser units on screen the better. Otherwise the game will be chaos and hard to understand/read in a pinch.

Few criticism that may or may not turn out true, haven't played it, just from spectator's point of view. There is no pacing. It's 100mph/kmh and nothing else. This can create fatigue in a viewer, certainly did for me in this series. No buildup means you have no real payoff. Just attack back and forth. They should bring back spawn position changes. Even if mirrored and "cosmetic". Changing diagonal positions does add something I realized as this felt too samey. I would even add that you should be able to spawn in all 4 locations but always opposite of your oponents to create meaning in the map. Map control wasn't really present, map features didn't really mean much if anything. Games are short, without proper pacing, clear game stage boundaries, there's not much to appreciate in-game. In a series of games I forgot what happened in the previous game. Doesn't create memorable, lasting impressions because all the decision making is done before the game so you see fights. Potential fixes while in line with the game direction could be slow built-time of units early on, units costing time - T1 5seconds, t2 - 7 seconds, t3 10 seconds or something similar. Can even be done in reverse - T1 cost more time to make and it slows down with higher tier. Units are samey. Not immediately recognizable in terms of roles. They may have different roles but they look like they lpay the same - constant attacking. When they hodl the attack, you retreat until you meet your reinforcements so you push back again. THey went through a bunch of decks of units but the playstyles and pacing remained the same. I don't see how you can build a deck to suit your style when the game is built on 1 stile - constant action and fights. The units attacks, while different, were very simiilar I think in visuals and feel. The lack of skills/spells is clearly visible and they should introduce that ASAP. The fights are very deathbally for the most part, individual micro didn't play great role other than kiting and stutter stepping. UI, so far of course, isn't helpuing you understand who is ahead and what's at stake with each attack. The game seems even until suddenly someone dies or loses significantly, but for the most part it was hard to tell who is winning or losing and why. Some units, as I suspected, are hard counters so you can lose before the game is even started. Got a few more but those are the major ones. All in all, it looked fun but tiring and I can't wait to actually play it and see how much of that will hold up once I am in the game.

Its the first RTS game to do something like this and I think because of that its going to be pretty popular.
