Yay for the new space! My husband remodeled my studio and moving back in and getting settled has been stressful. I have the same white wire mesh drawer thing from IKEA. It holds my sanding paper, adhesives and the last misc buts and bobbs. Cheers to creating again! 🥂

It's such a handy little thing, I'm surprised I didn't get it earlier! There's so much room to keep everything neatly organised and doesn't take much space. Hahahaha, just "a little" bit, Deb, just a bit!! 😄😂 But to be frank, I used to buy only several gemstones at a time and I tried my best to use as much as possible before I purchased new ones. It was a budgeting thing. But now I started collecting some more, seeing how it helps with creativity and allows me to expand with designs and make jewellery more often - having the stones already at hand! :)) Though it's always hard to let go of them lol

I would love to see your work, it might kick me into doing some more when I can again. I'm following a jeweller called Chris on YT I think he's is Diamond Mounter. I'm dyslexic and spelling has always been a problem. Anyway, he puts his metal block on a square of carpet to help kill the noise. As a high-end jeweller for 24 years, he is full of great tips and tricks. Plus all his videos are teaching. He charges £5 a month for part access, I may upgrade to £10 for full access, I think it would be worth it. Plus loads of free ones. Those domed ones with turquoise sound perfect, how did you mount the gems? Are the Fretz hammers worth the money? I've used different hammers all my working life so to me a hammer is just a knocking stick and not worth extra money. Stay safe...Steve...

I would put you bottles on the side you intend to solder on or which ever is you dominant side if you intend on soldering in the middle. You could even set up a separate table on the right just to solder on. 🤷🏽‍♀️ So many options.

The usual practice is to use the torch in your non dominant hand to leave the dominant for tweezers or a pick for any manipulating you may need to do. Stay safe...Steve...

So here's the thing. Steve is right, but the problem is, I've learned to hold the torch in my right (dominant) since the very beginning, and I use the solder pick in my left hand. It worked for me as I'm pretty good with both hands. So the set up you mentioned may work for me. But I think, with the big torch, I will learn to hold it in my left hand and will start using my right hand for the pick and other movements 😃 Oh, and the separate table would be a perfect idea! But unfortunately right now that won;t be possible. I will keep that idea for future though!

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingI'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous! I was told it's quicker/easier to use your dominant hand to shut off the taps on a torch than your weaker hand. I've never tried it but I can see the logic though. So your set up as you have it, will you put the propane tank, with regulator and gauges on the left side, with a chain around the tank so it can not fall over, and your oxygen regenerator next to it, also fixed back. Both with non-return valves, but using the machines gauges and meters. I'm partly making sure I have it right in my mind for doing exactly the same setup for myself. I got the GRS interchangeable setup, so I will, I think put the soldering shelf with its built-in 3rd hands in the middle. Like you I love that new shape sawing pin, and where you put it, I'll put mine there to the right also. But for filling I'm going to use the GRS pin in the middle, and swap it out for the ring holder when I need to. Stay safe...Steve...

oh most definitely! I downsized several times over the years and I thought I was already quite minimalistic. But it turns out even the most necessary items add up. Not to mention tools and all the stuff that's business related! These take up most of my space 😂 I will be soldering on the bench, just how I used to. There is a soldering board on a side, I'll just move it towards the centre when Isoldering. I'll think about a ventilating system as well, to make it safer. Hiya Lady Stardust, like someone, once said, 'There's no place like home!' Didn't she have red shoes? I toured with Judy's daughter Launa Luft for 3 months. Anyway, how you had it worked so why change it if it ain't broke? I love the amber! It's wonderful to see the wood floor under the bench, for safety, now if you had a fire extinguisher? It's fantastic to see it all coming together again, I like the white wire draw unit. Shame about the Ikea trolly though, hindsight is such great vision. Have I told you about Chris known as 'Diamond Mounter' here on YT? He worked in a very high-end jeweller in Bond Street in London. I've seen some of the output there, WOW! Hand made, bespoke one-offs, really shinny for the magpie in me. I'm going through all his back catalogue, he's been there, done it, for 24 years! A full apprenticeship in jewellery making with top teachers at work and college, not a graphic designer! He tells how top professional jewellers really do it not some provincial shopman. He also tells why. Time is money so why waste time. His tricks and tips videos, while nothing like yours are still wonderful, as you've been missing I'm learning a lot from him. To join his online classes, is £5 per month, not £20, for out of date videos and production. OK rant over, but try him out everyone, I love his work! Stay safe... Oh and welcome back...Steve xx...

Oh wow, that sounds amazing! Great experience 😍 I agree, why change anything when the system already works! So I will keep most of the tools and set up just the way it used to be, adding new ones or changing some bits here and there. The "wood" floor under the bench is a great solution (it's actually a thic lining), as it's not heavy and protects the floor and the carpet! My dad came up with this and I think it's perfect. The fact that he has done it for many years does help with accepting his ideas. i love the way he just does things, like making the cone for making a collet. Where do you prefer your bench pin to hit? Chest? Shoulders? Lower? I have a homemade bench and struggling w the height of my chair. It’s too high

The experts say, with your feet flat on the floor, your thigh should be parallel to the floor, and when working at your pin your back should be straight. A lot of people put lengths of wood under the legs at each end if the bench is to low. Fixing to the wall is also good, and if you use the extra wood, use brackets to make sure it does not move. The Diamond Mounter channel has a great video on doing it. Steve...

@@Susanarylander most 'experts' who talk about it suggest mid to high chest. I went with mid-chest, sternam sort of area, for great visibility. If you think about being at the bench for hours at a time, avoid neck and back strain by having them as straight as possible.
