I've almost completely stopped playing SC. At first glance I see a few reasons: * Devs effectively missed all promises and goals * No real ingame goal aside from money. Getting that new ship you wanted is a great feeling, but then what next? * Non-existent exploration * No crafting/building * No animals/pets * Complex gameplay and lack of gameloops prevents most new gamers There's probably more to it, but those are the key points that I can think of right now.

The main thing about Star Citizen for me that I realized in the past year is that although Star Citizen already has and will have a lot of gameplay and things that feel so awesome and I would love to experience, I realize that I won't be able to experience most of those just by nature of its MMO/multiplayer side. I won't have the time/skill or money to experience most of the cool ships, or gameplay loops, I don't have the luxury of dedicating hour longs of uninterrupted game time to experience most of the core loops. I've been trying to hop back in and experience some mining, but the amount of time it takes for me to get started mining after logging in, to just stumble on some pirate or something else and die just make me avoid picking it up.

I for one look forward to both. If anything, Balders Gate 3 shows what happens when a dev company is allowed to take their time, without as much pressure from outside sources, to produce an amazing product. Starfield may do the same thing as well. Starfield has been in story board for over 20 years according to Bethesda. If these two games from fully built development organizations have anything to compare to Star Citizen and CIG. Its that even a NEW company should be given time to cook. Amazing video Tomato.

Why ask them to hurry? Look at Balders Gate 3? It took 7 years for a 4 player aRPG, not nearly the scope of even SQ42. That was with a fully established dev studio and 300 people. Starfield is looking to be everything I was hoping SC would be. And after putting hundreds of hours into SC and going through the 3.18 debacle, CIG has pretty much lost me. I’m so tired of grinding salvage, mining, or cargo hauling for hours and then getting DC’d only to lose all of it and be reminded by Stockholm syndrome victims that it’s a beta. Just done with it. I want a game that remembers where I left off. And honestly, the single player aspect of Starfield is a bonus. There are enough crappy human beings in the world that get joy out of ruining other people’s nights that I’ll welcome the idea of them staying on SC as pirates.

I plan on playing both. I am a Bethesda fan for years, (primarily Fallout), and joined SC universe this past year. I totally agree with your take. I don't think Starfield is a an SC competitor. They are different games. It may be a bit of competition for just the Squadron 42 portion of SC, hence why CIG has been focusing on that lately, but not really, still different. But the reason I will play both is that I love Sci-Fi and space games and there has not been enough for several years. I don't like the ones where you are stuck in the ship. I like SC because of my Tech background and enjoy that side of it, and playing with friends. And waited... And waited. I only really got to actually playing it a year or two ago, but I have overall enjoyed it and like what it wants to be. Been playing it a bunch recently and generally have been having a good time (especially since I got the game/my pc to stop crashing while playing it). Though as it is still heavy in development, it just feels "incomplete" where Starfield probably won't. Starfield has me... Cautiously excited for it. I love the space games, but previous Bethesda games like Oblivion and Skyrim and Fallout have just bored the crap out of me and never kept my interest for long. Thank Microsoft for GamePass though, so I can just play Starfield on that. Fingers crossed it can give me the experience I've been looking for (or some of it, at least). Armored Core 6 has me WAY more hyped though. 🤣

I think when Star Citizen gets ‘finished’, is when the game dies. I enjoy it now, but it’s always changing, and I’m already looking forward to next years implements - like private docks and rooms. When it’s done, means development pretty much stops. No more major changes, and it just becomes stale, and people walk away. That’s how I am with Elite Dangerous. Loved the concept, though it’s more ‘gamey’ that Star Citizen. But it just got stale nothing much was changing, and then they rolled out whatever game update that was horrible, and my circle of friends got tired of playing it. Same with Eve Online. When the goal is ‘just a game’ which is what Starfield, Elite Dangerous, and Eve all do/did, they have a finished product goal. And they achieve it, and that’s it, it’s done. The best thing about Star Citizen for me is that it has ambitions that are always changing and getting better after implementation. But that’s not for everyone. Many games enjoy the sim feel of Star citizen, and many gamers want to “beat” a game, and go onto the next thing.

@@Chuck8541 But CIG already aims for MVP so there is going to be a lot of stuff going to be left to implement. Besides, there is hopefully coming hand crafted missions and stories every couple months to the game after release. I think this would be the only approach to take a step into the mainstream and have people stay or come back. But I do think interest will... change (?) the closer we are to a release. The game realizing is going to clash with expectations of backers. I fear the community outrage will becomes worse before people stop caring and just play the (released) game.

lol 😃 Star Citizen is an extremely open-world based game. There are no skill points or traditional "leveling" up, you just get placed on a planet and figure out the game as you go along. The player base is super supportive, ships are fun, and the most unique part is that it's *Multiplayer*. Many ships can't even be used at all without a player crew. However, the game is buggy, the servers are terrible, there's no real exploration, and there's no crafting. So overall, there's not a lot of purpose in the game and you're just kind of "there". Although the concept _seems_ cool, the actual game really is not and gets boring quite quickly. Bugs and Servers crashing adds to the rage-quits until most people just give up on the game entirely

The only difference is, some will play one, some will play both, but in time Starfield will fade to the next AAA game everyone needs to stream for, and Star Citizen will LIKELY still be going strong. Personally, I’m about to start bulders gate and currently play switch games and Star Citizen…I like my lineup, and not really interested in what it seems Starfield is looking like. I’ll let you guys review it for me, and decide further. I don’t think the hype is attainable for starfield. It’s so hyped right now, has been for months, and nobody has even played it. They even got Adam Savage to do ship design or whatever video for it. Which, to me, is the equivalent of Keanu coming out for Cyberpunk. Everyone has so much desire for this game, cuz nothing else but buldergate is out right now. Balloons that you get from parties fade quick. Looking forward to how things play out. 😎

Calling starfield a "star citizen killer" would be like calling skyrim or any of the Witcher games a "world of warcraft killer" they may be set in the same genre and thus are going to have overlapping traits. But like tomato here said, at the end of the day they are two different games with different feel and focus. All its going to do is add another (hopefully) great title to the genre, expose more people to the genre, and inevitably bring more players to the genre as a whole and to star citizen Some might "jump ship" but those people weren't looking for a star citizen game, they were looking for a starfield game and sc was the closest they could get. But there's going to be even more people brought into star citizen than the few that leave.

they're definitely different games. Star Citizen is aimed at creating an extremely complex multiplayer experience at an absurd level. Starfield is more like Skyrim where there are many, but limited interactions. Its apples and oranges.

Star Citizen was a good space game for a while. It was a pretty game that allowed you to walk around on planets or fly around in very detailed ships. And now Starfield is about to step into that spot and add a whole lot more. Sure, SC is multiplayer and allows you to fly around near planets. So's Elite Dangerous. Was that enough? Star Citizen USED to make a great first impression. (so much so that I spent way more than was sane) The last few patches, not so much. I read posts on spectrum about people in their first week that are already overwhelmed by how buggy it is and thinking of quitting. I think there's a lot of people that just want to play a space game that will play StarField then look at SC and ask, "why bother? There's so little after all this time."

Healthy competition in the single player arena. No guarantee that CIG will step up to compete. No guarantee Bethesda will go for the multiplayer/mmo title next. No proof that CIG are even truly competing in either arena. Let's see what Bethsda deliver, and then see how things unfold from there. Either way. I'm hopeful, as Bethesda are a AAA household name. CIG will, or CIG won't. Bethesda will, or Bethesda won't.

I've given up on Star Citizen. I've been playing it since the beginning and it still never runs worth a crap. It's on an SSD, Ryzen 9 5900X (water cooled), Radeon RX 6950XT, 32 GB Ram and 100+ mbps internet. No other games have any issues, all run on ultra 1440p. I'm looking forward to a real game made by real game developers.

Considering I've put over 2k hours into Skyrim and have no intent to stop playing it, I'd say I really have no need for Star Citizen if Starfield lives up to what it promises. Also, it's not an exaggeration to say that Starfield will far surpass Star Citizen once the modding community gets rolling. I'd wager nearly everything the modders do to Starfield will outpace everything added to Star Cirizen over the same amount of time.

True Dat! The problem is that SC really isn't much there to promote it. "One day.." "Eventually..." "It's Work in Progress..." these are all answers that seem to come when we talk about SC, and as other studios bring out their games CIG will be left in the dust. When Starfield comes out, would I even be interested to play SQ42 if it came out this year? Maybe? At this point it's really not looking good for CIG.

Star Citizen is fun, I enjoy the growth of the same while I spend less time playing games, S.C is my purely only focused game and watching it grow feels like a new game every major patch. From just exploring a ship in the hanger, flying from PO for the first time, Exploring systems that are now "hidden" from the U.E.E data base map that I once explored to taking cargo and defending cargo on the catapillar. Starfield is the game i watch and enjoy watching and love to play but i dont have the time to focus on it right now.

And right off the bat you draw me into the allure of SC. I want to believe it is playable and the glitches/bugs are minor compared to flying and sailing in Second Life. But as I bought the advance preorder of Starfield, I'll go with it for now. Face it. You were heavily favoring SF at least off the top. And I don't blame you. I hope SC continues to work towards release one day. Maybe after I am ready to move on from SF. With a learning curve yet to begin, I'll keep one foot in Eve Online while I reach for the stars in Starfield. FYI, your conclusion surprised me. Very fair balance once I listened all the way through the video.

I think the worst case scenario would be that Starfield drains interest from Star Citizen enough, leading diminishing sales for the rest of the year, perhaps even lay-offs, then again affects how much people dare to buy ships and starts a unrecovarable death spiral. And the best case scenario would be that Starfield actually brings in loads new people into SC. Probably end result will be in-between.

Chris is fortunate the genre is bare. I would wager most OG's are long gone already anyway because SC isn't at all what we wanted. I personally wasn't sold on Rust in space, WOW in space or Microsoft Flight Sim in space. I was sold on a more immersive Freelancer WITH multiplayer. Go watch the original pitch and see how often Chris references both WC and Freelancer. Of course that's his fanbase, why would they want something completely different? On that experience, Starfield will absolutely steal CIGs thunder, but they never really had it anyway.

It may not be a “star citizen killer” in the sense of filling the exact same purpose. But does it entirely reveal that CIG is trash at making content and uses endless excuses that Don’t actually excuse their terrible development cycle? Yep. Does it give all the important aspects of star citizen for a player (minus multiplayer interactions until a mod adds it)? Yep absolutely. The only attack SC fanboys have against Starfield is “but it’s not as immersive because you can’t fly for 30 minutes across a planet to drop off a box” ok cool bro you have fun sitting there afk in quantum travel, I’ll actually warp and then keep having real fun on a finished game with mod support. And it’ll definitely get a multiplayer mod years before SC is finished.

It could however, beome, a Star Citizen killer, and at present, it is siming to compete in the Single Player arena in which CIG/SC has supposedly aiming to compete in, and currently, failed to even step into, for over a decade. Let's see what comes after Bethesda have delivered Starfield. What Bethesda and CIG each decide to do respectively, within the SP and MP/MMO arenas, with their relevant titles, released, or otherwise, will determine if one of them suffers. Bethesda dwarf CIG in almost all metrics fivefold.
