I just built my first custom ship from the ground up last night. It’s pretty slow but it’s heavily armored and shielded and it’s got a good amount of fire power. I’m having fun playing around with the ship editer now that I have the appropriate skills.

Hey, nothing wrong with a slower more bulky ship. If you haven't already, invest in turret weapons, they will keep the pressure on even when you can't focus your main weapons on your target

Pro tip for anyone reading: Your TOTAL engine power pips do not effect your top speed or maneuverability. This is better explained with an example: If in the ship editor your stats say 100 mobility and 150 speed (the max you can get). That means that is achievable at max power input. Which means if your engines only take up 6 power... you get full 100 mobility and 150 speed at just 6 power investment. If a ship has 100 mobility and 150 speed but has 12 total power in the engines... They need to invest all 12 to get the full mobility and speed output. So strapping unnecessary engines on a ship has negative consequences and building them to be as engine efficient as possible translates to power efficiency.

Very nice! This thing is sooo fast! For me, I would replace the All-In-One with a HopeTech Armoury, which gives us a Brig to carry prisoners. Now you can use the bed in the Brig as well, but if you still need living quarters, replace the engine mounts with a HopeTech All-In-One for that Space-Dawg look

I'm putting in my vote for a Psyker build. mainly using the 'manipulation' type skills at the bottom of the social tree. I went with the sculptor background because it gives you Medicine and Persuasion to start. I roleplay that he used to be a famous sculptor until a degenerative disease took his eyesight, in a desperate move he signed up for an experimental treatment which was actually a front for them to experiment with injecting terrormorph dna into a human (Alien DNA trait), which is the source of hi psychic abilities. to round him out i went with the Empath and Extrovert traits. Also lasers.

Industrialist Build Background: Industrialist. Traits: Extrovert, Neon Street Rat, Taskmaster. Growing up on the lowly streets of neon, the Industrialist had nothing but their gift for working with and working ‘with’ people. While many would have fallen into the gang lifestyle in circumstances like these, the industrialist had their eyes set on higher ideas, no more would he be the scum but the ruler of neon. He began working in lower management positions due to his skill, but repeatedly switched employer to employer based on who could give him more. Eventually he was making 6 figures and had the contacts to strike out on his own, founding a successful startup company. All was going well for the first few years till the corporations he once worked for decided enough was enough, and the squashed the startup. Through gang harassment and then a forceful buy up. With nothing once again, the industrialist used the very last of their clout to get off world where he wouldn’t be threatened, and took up a simple contract with Argos Extractors. It was time, to begin again. And this time, he will win. To make this you may be interested in some recent creation club items, like StarSim, which simulates owning a mining company. This is brilliant. Apart from that I recommend making money doing cargo and passenger missions, as well as the ones where you supply resources from outposts. Here are my skills recommendations. Physical: Social: * Commerce 4. Persuasion 4. * * Leadership 4? Outpost Management 4. * Ship Command 4? Combat: * Lasers 4. Science: * Astrodynamics 4. Research Methods 1. * Botany? Zoology? * Outpost Engineering 4. * Aneutronic Fusion 4? Planetary Habitation 4? Special Projects 4? Tech: * Piloting 4. Security 3. * Payloads 4. * Starship Design 4. In combat, that isn’t the central theme of the build, but it is a part of the game. As such I recommend just investing in Lasers and using the cutter. Which is actually the best DPS weapon thanks to the constant burning effect it applies. --- For the ship I recommend making a large cargo hauler. As such you’ll want the 6830 as it gives the most thrust, meaning you can keep a high mobility in combat should the situation arise. You unlock it through Walter’s quest after ‘all that money can buy’ where he asks you to design a ship, you must get the best one, I recommend looking up guides. This gives you 4,280 Mass to work with, which when you take the engines away is 2,278 Mass. - the best cargo storage for mass to cargo is the StorMax30, but depending how much space you design on your cargo hauler, upping it to the StorMax60 will work just fine. I like to go big or go home, so for some other ship parts I recommend: Pinch 8Z Reactor, R-3000 Alpha Grav Drive (actually smallest you can get while having ,enough jump range. Assuming Astrodynamics 4), Assurance SG-1800 Shield Generator, Comspike, Conduction Grid, Multi-Frequency Jammer, 6x Vanguard Obliterator Autoprojector, 6x Vanguard Obliterator Autoprojector? - leaving you with 1,930 mass to work with. For Hab parts I recommend HopeTech due to their reputation for pragmatism, this is a cargo ship after all. Also for the general design. I recommend bunching the 6 engines together at the back, which will make a 4x3 back for you to build the rest of the ship from. Then make it a long squarish design with StorMax on the sides. - also thanks to the height, if you’re smart about placement you can make all the important equipment (apart from weapons and engines obviously) fit internally within the ship to prevent them from being disabled. For example. Imagine a 1x1 Hab, with a 2x1 space above it, then another 1x1 Hab. You could fit a reactor into that space, then a grab drive into a similar one, then a shield with equipment in another, and more equipment in another. I think having 3 internal spaces like I described is enough. Then you’ll have hand on the sides of the ship too. Overall I reckon the smallest profile you can make following this (excluding engines would be x5y3z4.

For anyone wondering you can buy the landing gear at hopetown at lvl 15 and starship design rank 1. Or at the beginning of the game you can board one of the crimsion fleet ghost ships that attack you and take it. It cost about 4500 to register and comes with two of the hopetech landing gears as well as the cockpit and bay that is in this build. Then once you hit the requirements for more of the landing gears go to hopetown and copy the ones you have so theyll have the same paint job. You could rp as your character is wanting a ship that reminds them of one they lost or one they planned to build before working for argos.

A bounty hunter ship has to have a brig, so you definitely have to go with the larger design. You can go with the Hopetech Amory 2x1 instead of the 2x2, which suprisingly enough, also has a brig cell! And the Bounty Hunter should have only 2 weapon systems, 12 bars of auto-PARs to get multifunction attacks(shield&hull at the same time), and EM weapons to disable a ship so you can take in your bounty alive if that is what the bounty calls for.

My first character was a Bounty hunter, and I ended up doing the Mantis quest pretty early. I fell in love with the Razorleaf because it was almost exactly what I wanted to make, small-ish with a cabin to sleep in with an armory for her weapons, made some modifications to it and boom it's a fast hard hitting ship with a story.

Uh muh gawd, this build is amazing! I've been getting my butt handed to me in the damn Kepler R for years it seems. This build is amazing!!! I can't wrap my head around how this tiny ship has a greater hull size than the Kepler or Freestar Renegade, but I'll take it! Instead of the railguns you use I couldn't find them so I used the Vanguard Auto obliterator or whatever, 4 of them. Works like a champ! Thanks so much!!!! (PS next time slow down during the build, I had to pause and rewind a lot!)

This has become a design I always rebuild every NG+! The only modifications I do are Horizon weapon mounts on both sides of the landing bay and I change the Deimos spine behind the cockpit to the one with 3 weapon mounts. This way you can stack on as many weapons as you need while retaining the 3 engine build. I really hope you put out some more ship build videos!

Built this ship lastnight its awesome, I was able to squeeze 2 more weapon mounts out by using the deimos spine c aft it has s angled and one top so you can mount weapons lower closer to the cockpit.

There is a 2x1 brig in the game also. I thing it was the Daimos Armory. But don't quote me. My only issue with it is that it has weapon storage 3 feet from the holding cell.

The 2x1 Taiyo Armory and HopeTech Armory both have a brig cell. All of the other brigs are 2x2 (I think there is a 2x3 somewhere?) Now if the brig were actually USED for bounty hunting missions - that would be awesome.

You've done a Freestar gunslinger, a Crimson Fleet pirate and soon a bounty hunter. Can't wait to see what's next. My most recent playthrough's been what I've been calling my "Vanguard Swashbuckler" - a melee weapon build with a UC cutlass and a pistol for backup (or Terrormorphs. Seriously, don't fight those things in melee. ) And for a ship, I modified a Deimos Phalanx-class, slapped a class C reactor on it and gave it laser turrets for stripping shields, railguns for shredding the small fry and EM suppressors for taking ships as prizes.

The Nova Galactic Captain's Quarters give you a bed, a galley, and a massive 150kg storage chest. I agree with the vibe of the Armstrong cockpit, a small ship should be as compact as possible.

I feel like the Nova Braces should be replaced with the all-in-one and the current hab should be be one of the 2X1 armory habs with a mini-brig to give the hunter a cell to put their bounties in

Instead of an all-in-one, living quarters, or captain's quarters, you can use a Hopetech or Taiyo armory. Those actually have beds in the armory. So every time you head out for a mission, you also get to look at the things on your way.

At first I was shocked when I read this, but looking at the armory habs you mention made me realize you could sleep in the mini brig in those habs. For some reason it just didn’t click before that that’s a practical bed, instead of just aesthetic.

Great build! This is my new daily driver with some tweaks to fit how I play. I added an additional hab at the cost of adding 1x1 to the length of the ship. I have a captains quarters and on the second deck a Deimos armory for the brig. It has almost 1k in cargo space although I could probably trim it down or eliminate it altogether. It carries eight total guns plus some EM for boarding purposes. The only con if you could call it that is that mobility is between between 80-90 but it still runs fast. Based on how I fight the mobility isn't an issue. If I get into trouble I start kiting, no big deal.

if you capture a crimson fleet ghost (can be done as soon as you can freely travel, look for destroy missions from cidonia) it's basically this ship, has 2 of the landing gears, same cockpit, same bay. it's a good starting point if this is the ship you want to build.

Ths might be my favorite starfield build. till now my approach to space combat has been build a massive ship and load it up with most op weapons since it felt like enemies had aim bot. but with a fast ship i can actually dog fight! wow.
