Yeah, seriously, someone give proto-McKay there a hug. (If anyone cares, his name is Gary Meyers and he becomes quite an important character in a series of Stargate books written before SG-1 was a thing. And yeah, I know Richard Kind goes on to play Lucius Lavin from SGA, but early Rodney is who Meyers really reminds me of.)

I mean, not really. She did not take him against his will. She merely offered him a job and when his nerves failed him, reminded him he doesn't really have much else to do. So he willingly makes the decision to help. If he had been insistent on not helping, I don't think she'd have made him. Rest of the military? Maybe but not her.

Look up the role playing game by Richard Tucholka, Fringeworthy. Stargate is a direct ripoff of Fringeworthy. Apparently in the original treatment for Stargate, they even lifted some of the character names from the role playing game (yes it WAS stolen) and only changed them afterward. It's an open secret in Hollywood that Stargate is a direct theft of IP that noone ever wants to talk about. Richard tried to sue them for the theft, with predictable results given this was a humble game designer up against a multi billion dollar mega corporation. It's sad really, Richard had a wealth of ideas that would have made the series an even bigger hit, and some of his other games like Bureau13 was decades ahead of hollywood, basically a proto X files.

A draft for Stargate was passed around to various studios. Rejected by all. The person who wrote knew a lot about egypt. Anyway copyright lawsuit later failed; they didn't do it fast enough so they were unsuccessful. It was a brilliant concept, and i wish they would just credit the guy and throw him 100k as a consolation prize. They made a ton of money on the movie and the TV series.

@@AnneEloiseOfCNY Only a few hundred films are made each year. But many thousands of scripts are written. The poor slobs who circulate their scripts don't realize how dangerous it is to give out ideas to people who live in sensory-deprived cubicles who could never in a million years come up with so many details about egypt. However, many the scripts are very poor, and it is just the ideas and a few backstory details that are lifted. this is one of the worst examples of plagiarism in Hollywood history. There are also sometimes wild coincidences, as some ideas are born of the time. I worked in hollywood for a year, and there were two different Robin Hood movies being made at the same time, both filming in sherwood forest. Ideas are not protected in our system. We have utility and design patents, but copyright is about an expression, not ideas.

@@AnneEloiseOfCNY In the case of Stargate, a guy named Omar Zuhdi wrote a story, passed it around to a few studios, one of which was where Emmerich worked, and years alter, he published the book "Egyptscale" The stories are not the same, but Zuhdi figured out he had been copied when after going through the gate the unemployed egyptologist is helped up by a solder and the guy in the movie says the exact same thing. That's when it stops being coincidence. It was settled out of court. Emmerich has done this more than once. That being said; he is a great director. ----- Egyptscape is a free-wheeling adventure story involving time travel, an out of work Egyptologist, and a government sponsored experiment that opened the door to a long-dead ancient civilization, and the inevitable contamination due to the crossing of time.

Gun control is not about stopping bad people from having guns, it's to prevent good people from having guns. Bad people could care less about the law, they will get what they want through extralegal means.
@TangomanX2008
@TangomanX2008 2 жыл бұрын
@@kdrapertrucker Gun control works extremely well in other countries, so your view on what constitutes people or bad people and what logic follows from that is irrelevant. Other countries, including countries with the same language and similar cultures as the US do not have the extreme gun violence we have in the the US. And lets be real here, there is always guns control. There are legal limits to weapons, including types of weapons and ordinance (including types of rounds) that a private citizen can own or use. Also, there are always limits, or, to use a word in the 2nd Amendment, "Regulated." What really amazes me though, is that organizations that should recognize the values of certain requirements, like the requirement of basic competence and skills, like how to use and maintain a firearm properly. For instance, the NRA. I've been to places that are affiliated with the NRA, and these people do not kid around the importance of training and safety (eg. always treat the firearm as if it is loaded, never point it at something you don't intend to shoot, etc), and have strict rules around firearm safety (and if you break these rules too many times you will be asked to leave), and yet, these same organizations push any laws that might requires some evidence that a firearm owner can follow these safe practices. In an ideal world, I could imagine organizations such as the NRA participating the crafting of safety regulation for firearm ownership, but I don't sure if I'd trust it to do so with the extreme position it has adopted.

@@TangomanX2008 nearly all of the gun violence in the US is in inner cities and are related to gang and/or drug violence. Outside of certain inner cities (which has some of the most extreme gun control laws), the US is one of the safest countries in the world. The issue isn't the guns, the issue is inner city gang violence. The reason for that extreme gang activity is widespread. Just as prohibition on alcohol led to gang violence in the 1920-30s, so has prohibition on drugs led to the same today. Fatherlessness among many inner city men and boys has caused them to seek out role models in negative ways. Most gang members are raised by single mothers and so In order to feel like a man, they join a gang to get back what they didn't have growing up as a young child. This results in overly aggressive behavior and perpetuates the cycle of violence. Guns are just tools. They can cause horrific damage or be used to limit or prevent that damage. The fact that the police have guns shows that they are needed to keep the peace. But, why should the state have a monopoly on violence? That's what happens when you ban guns. But, without an armed populace, there is no check on the power of the state and thus it leads to tyranny and oppression. Which is exactly what happens in inner city neighborhoods, normal people are held hostage by violent thugs terrorizing their neighborhoods or overly aggressive police who has lost patience with trying to stop that violence. And while some are willing to acknowledge that the root cause of the issue is that the traditional family has broken down and barely exists in those neighborhoods, few are willing to take the necessary steps to repair the damage.

Outside of certain inner cities (which has some of the most extreme gun control laws), the US is one of the safest countries in the world. The issue isn't the guns, the issue is inner city gang violence." Please be a little more specific here. I mean, what you are doing here is no better than appealing to what "they say." Not really citing anything, not appeealing to anything. "The reason for that extreme gang activity is widespread. This results in overly aggressive behavior and perpetuates the cycle of violence." Again, you are just citing to vague ideas, no actual figures. "Guns are just tools. They can cause horrific damage or be used to limit or prevent that damage. The fact that the police have guns shows that they are needed to keep the peace. But, why should the state have a monopoly on violence? That's what happens when you ban guns. And while some are willing to acknowledge that the root cause of the issue is that the traditional family has broken down and barely exists in those neighborhoods, few are willing to take the necessary steps to repair the damage." This "guns are just tools" idea is a bad argument. There is no such thing as "just a tool." The questions like what is the tool designed for, should access or use for the tool be regulated are perfectly legitimate. I'm not sure what pointing out that they are tools is supposed to accomplish. And, this question about, "why should the state have the monopoly of violence" the short answer is that any state that does not is a failed state. The alternative is a region with warlords or criminal organizations.

Awesome movie! However, I never could get into the show because they had different actors, and it seemed REALLY cheesy compared to this classic. I wish that they would have just made a Stargate 2, 3, and possibly 4, using the same actors, instead.

James Spader played in a couple of movies where he is suppose to be a bad ass type. " Jack's Back " I think the other was called " SuperNova." Spader is a nerd an egg head, to sit and watch him play a bad ass type was kind of silly. But when he played in the movie "Wolf" he did really good. But Star Gate, he was at his best. Michael Shank was a really good replacement. But as he got older he grew out of the nerdy type. He stared in a episode of "Burn Notice " as a secret agent type guy. Sadly they killed him off, they could have made a great spin off of that show. Of all the Stat Gate shows, Stargate Atlantis was my favorite. Shank's guest stared on a couple of shows. And they were really good. When the SciFi channel canceled the show and replaced it with wrestling I cut the cord.

Part of it was they wanted to make him look young, hence the long hair and bright-eyed glasses. They made him seem a lot younger and more vital, and he changed his voice accordingly. Gave him that bright but naive vibe. Also age, time, tide, and party-abuse, james spader was very vocal about his proclivities and some of that affected his voice. Also he took a lot more sinister roles and played it up, y'know, he's an actor, play to your assets and handicaps.

Same thing happened to me. Just the other way around. LOL I watched Stargate when it was first released (1994) so I will always remember James Spader as Daniel Jackson. He became typecast in that role. Couple of years ago (during covid lockdown) I discovered Blacklist. One of the names sounded familiar. James Spader. I thought "What? Is this the guy from Stargate? Haven't seen him in 20 or 30 years!"
