My favorite surreal moment from this overlooked drama - can't get enough

Sad to think there will never be another Dennis Potter - what an oustanding man he was.

Trouble is television - allowing for some fine dramas and there still is fine drama - but perhaps not as experimental as Dennis was

Glorious! Wonderful! Fabulous singing and amazing writing and choreography. God bless Dennis Potter, RIP (not that he'd thank you for it)

Way back when it first aired in Canada, I was channel hopping and landed on this scene - my intro to the show. I didn't know what the hell I was watching, but it was fun.

"Lipstick on your collar" was the third part of a trilogy of "musical" works by Dennis Potter, the first being "Pennies from Heaven" starring a then-unknown actor called Bob Hoskins.......it was then followed by the "Singing Detective" which starred Michael Gambon, and "Lipstick on your Collar" completed the set.........each series aroused great controversy in the Uk, as each series featured lots of sex and nudity, all of which was not the usual fare of the BBC at the time......the music in each series was of original recordings of the time featured in the series, "Pennies from Heaven" was set in the 1930's, "Singing Detective" set in the 1940's and "lipstick on your collar" set in the fifties........the songs were the original recordings, which the cast members mimed along to, it worked remarkably well, and the three series were simply brilliant and very watchable.......as were the ladies featured in each series..............

I like to believe this has something to do with politics and I'm sure it's a perfect satire, but man oh man, my impression always is that somebody was eating some really strange fruits while working on this. :D

Yes and yes! It was about the Suez crisis of 1956. The British prime minister, Anthony Eden, handled it badly, leaving us (the Brits) with egg (or something else) on our faces. The writer, Dennis Potter, was in a similar role to the two translators in the war office at the time, so it is partly autobiographical. He suffered from a debilitating form of psoriasis (see the Singing Detective) and so was often on morphine to help with the pain. So you can see where the morphine influenced his imagination. This is one of the reasons why no one comes close to him in terms of this style of imaginative creativity.
