As I watch this again and again, a thought crosses my mind.. Benny had gained an incredible second life "across the pond" in America.. a truly great opportunity was lost when HBO (who aired his specials) did not approach him about continuing on cable. He would've had free reign content wise and could've stayed home and filmed at local studios and soundstages.. HBO would've paid the cost.. Looking back now... such a great loss..

You could hear the hoof beats pound as they raced across the ground, And the clatter of the wheels as they spun 'round and 'round. And he galloped into market street, his badge upon his chest, His name was Ernie, and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west. Now Ernie loved a widow, a lady known as Sue, She lived all alone in Liddley Lane at number 22. They said she was too good for him, she was haughty, proud and chic, But Ernie got his cocoa there three times every week. They called him Ernie, (Ernieeeeeeeeeee) And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west. She said she'd like to bathe in milk, he said, "All right, sweetheart," And when he'd finished work one night he loaded up his cart. He said, "D'you want it pasturize? 'Cause pasturize is best," She says, "Ernie, I'll be happy if it comes up to my chest." That tickled old Ernie, (Ernieeeeeeeeeee) And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west. Now Ernie had a rival, an evil-looking man, Called Two-Ton Ted from Teddington and he drove the baker's van. He tempted her with his treacle tarts and his tasty wholemeal bread, And when she seen the size of his hot meat pies it very near turned her head. She nearly swooned at his macaroon and he said, "If you treat me right, You'll have hot rolls every morning and crumpets every night." He knew once she sampled his layer cake he'd have his wicked way, And all Ernie had to offer was a pint of milk a day. Poor Ernie, (Ernieeeeeeeeeee) And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west. One lunch time Ted saw Ernie's horse and cart outside her door, It drove him mad to find it was still there at half past four. And as he lept down from his van hot blood through his veins did course, And he went across to Ernie's cart and didn't half kick his 'orse. Whose name was Trigger, (Triggerrrrrrrr) And he pulled the fastest milk cart in the west. Now Ernie rushed out into the street, his gold top in his hand, He said, "If you wanna marry Susie you'll fight for her like a man." "Oh why don't we play cards for her?" he sneeringly replied, "And just to make it interesting we'll have a shilling on the side." Now Ernie dragged him from his van and beneath the blazing sun, They stood there face to face, and Ted went for his bun. But Ernie was too quick, things didn't go the way Ted planned, And a strawberry-flavoured yogurt sent it spinning from his hand. Now Susie ran between them and tried to keep them apart, And Ernie, he pushed her aside and a rock cake caught him underneath his heart. And he looked up in pained surprise and the concrete hardened crust, Of a stale pork pie caught him in the eye and Ernie bit the dust. Poor Ernie, (Ernieeeeeeeeeee) And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west. Ernie was only 52, he didn't wanna die, And now he's gone to make deliveries in that milk round in the sky. Where the customers are angels and ferocious dogs are banned, And the milkman's life is full of fun in that fairy, dairy land. But a woman's needs are many fold and soon she married Ted, But strange things happened on their wedding night as they lay in their bed. Was that the trees a-rustling? Or the hinges of the gate? Or Ernie's ghostly gold tops a-rattling in their crate? They won't forget Ernie, (Ernieeeeeeeeee) And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

I did about 15 houses at the top of the old Fair Oak Road that were once on his round. One 90 yo lady showed me a photo of her and Benny Hill, one of the national papers did an article on him when he became famous and they visited her house for the story. Only one man at the dairy in Factory Road was left from when Benny Hill worked there but he spoke of what an incredibly funny and top bloke he was.A great comedian, yes dated now but still enjoyable to watch.

This hit from Benny Hill was the 276th #1 song of the Rock Era in the United Kingdom. It was also the last #1 song of 1971 and the first of 1972. What will the music scene be like in the UK in the new year? Stay tuned.

Strange thing about Benny Hill, he made a fortune and hardly spent anything. He spent his time sitting in a rented flat watching TV to get ideas for his show. Died alone and his body not found for days. Sad really.

It seems he was a loner, living in an untidy bachelor pad. He had no girlfriends, and did spend money on prostitutes and drugs. He was always obsessed with writing another sketch. Maybe he had Asperger's Syndrome?

Oh stop with this mental health crap this is England not Germany! ... no girlfriends? Benny was bi if not gay! But it didn't matter, ppl loved him. I remember his agent saying as they were climbing the ladder into his flat, "if he's dead ill kill him".. I love how my country deals with death 😅

Here's a true story. I was at a bus stop in Twickenham High Street in 1992. I was awaiting a bus to take me to a family gathering. The only other people waiting, were two old ladies. It was a sunny afternoon. A man in a pale pink safari suit walked up to the bus stop (short sleeved). It was Benny Hill. he looked at the timetable affixed to the post but no sooner had he begun perusing the times of the buses, when the old ladies yelped. That's Benny Hill.' The got up and began saying 'Benny, Benny!' He looked nervous and began to walk away. They pursued him and i spontaneously sang the famous Benny Hill Theme as the trio scuttled away along Twickers High Street,. This bus stop served Teddington. He must have imagined that he could catch a bus home, unmolested but the scene played out just like a typical ending to one of his shows. His show was axed but 3 years before this . He died a few weeks after i 'met' him. I don't know if these silver sables chased him to his doom; I'm not certain. But he had been warned about his heart condition by doctors and he had refused a bypass operation. Anyway, true story. No phone cameras, in those days. Wonderful moment

As a boy between 1987 and the early 90's I spent some of my happiest times every Saturday as a "Milkboy" with the local Unigate Milkman on his old three wheeler. What great days they were. I know there is the old cliche about the Milkman being the housewives' favourite, but there was truth in it. Even at his advanced years, the Milky still had the Teddyboy quiff and sideburns which, when combined with the Unigate uniform, with its red collar and cuffs, almost made it look like he was reliving his youth on a daily basis! As for milkies being the housewives' favourite I think at my tender years then I couldn't put two and two together regarding why he would disappear into certain ladies' houses for a little longer than was really required. However, frivolity aside, I learnt during those happy years that the milkman really had a central role socially at that time:Nothing was too much trouble. and he would always go the extra mile to help the old or someone who was sick. The kind of pillar of the community who seem to be hard to find nowadays.
