Stark Varg KYB vs Yamaha KYB suspension. Some differences!

Taking a dive into the suspension on the Stark Varg! Its rumored to be the same as the Yamaha setup but I found some differences worth noting!

Good comparison! The stark outer tube is similar to the KX250F KYB suspension. The larger cartridge diameter increases the oil volume the mid piston moves through. This is often called “swept volume”. The larger the volume the more “speed sensitive” the damper is. 2018 is when the 25mm cart was first introduced on the YZ450F then 2019 on the YZ250F.

Nice one for the info mate. Enjoying your videos. Really considering the varg. I’m fairly new to off road myself. Currently run a 2022 sherco 250 se factory which I love. Tried the wr250f and ktm 250f of the same years but the sherco felt so nimble on the single track to me ( as a noob). Look forward to more content and some vargs coming to the UK👌🏼👍

Nice comparison of how the KYB feels on your YZ250F and the Varg. The '23 YZ450F suspension setting is perhaps the firmest stock Yamaha setting I've ridden to date - lots of damping and control and when riding the 22 YZ250F back to back with the 23 YZ450F noticeable difference. What spring rates did your forks and shock come with from Varg? Been a while but I think I ordered my Varg for 190~195 lbs rider (I am 190 lbs). Curious what Varg is sending for the different weigh riders. RT62MX and Grear MX open this weekend - maybe they will be dry enough to ride unless the rain tonight ruins it!

I heard the new YZ platform is a little firmer feeling. I ordered the 210-220# suspension and I weigh right at 210#. It was dead on perfect sag right out of the box. Didn't even have to adjust that!

The fork tubes on the stark have 3 lines at the top. That means the tubes themselves are way stiffer. Also they put 335cc in each which is waay more than Yamaha’s 270cc

Funny enough I run 335cc in my Yamaha! Stiffer tubes are a good thing. Works well.

Thank you! I i raced in the late 90s and 00s. 125B and 250B. These days I just ride for fun! Don't care about lap times just care about going fast enough to not get hurt (again). Lol. I'm 45 so I don't heal as fast as I once did.

Only ridden my own trails so far. Going to Mines and Meadows soon to play in the singletrack. Should be great! Has been fun in my trails here so far.

How many miles can a 450 go and how many miles can a stark varg go? pls😅

About the same! For me, about 1.5hrs on an MX track. 2-3hrs in the woods. For a pro rider probably 35-40 minutes on MX. About the same as a full tank of gas. Maybe a bit less. Its close.

What rider weight did you tell them when you ordered versus your real weight. I like an under sprung bike but I'm slow.

I'm 210# and ordered for 210-220#. Its perfect for me. Sag was set from the factory somehow! It was exact. Didn't have to touch it! Definitely a first for me. My advice is order for your weight. If you want it more plush back down the clickers a bit or revalve it but springs for your weight helps the suspension work where it is designed to. An undersprung bike will feel hard because its riding lower in the stroke where you have more dampening.

Have you tried wheels from a YZ450? Do the wheels work with the Stark axle?

I doubt the Yamaha wheels would be even close. The KTM wheels are the right width and alignment but spacers have to be custom. Stark sells a full wheel/tire set for just $399 so that's the route I went with to have both 18" and 19" setups.

I would like to convert to 19" flat track front and rear. This is not available at Stark. I will try it with a wheel set from KTM EXC 2019.

@@motoJC727 There have been quite a few Supermoto setups on these already. I'm guessing they are using KTM wheels with custom spacers. The front KTM wheels bolt right up. Perfect fit. The rear axle and spacer type is different.

Not sure sorry. But for 100% sure 60hp on these things is plenty! More than enough. Still faster than all 450s.
