Some "I want" songs end up being contradicted by the plot (like Happy Ending or No One Remembers Achmed) and some define it (like I Wanna Be), but what makes Dark Sad Lonely Knight such a good "I Want" song is how it establishes that every main character wants to be "somebody's buddy", which ends up being the way they defeat the villains and how it ends, with everyone finding a friend like they wanted to. (What differs this from I Wanna Be, for example, is how the story ends when they all are finally friends, while in Starship, a conflict surges and triggers that happiness, ending not quite in the way Bug expected.)

What If seems pretty low, seeing as it's pretty much the defining moment of Zazz declaring her desire for life to change, which is the whole driving force of the plot. Meanwhile Let It Out doesn't feel like an example of this at all.

caitlin louise yeah i completely get that. that was poorly worded on my part, i meant that she wants to be recognised by everyone as the coolest girl, she is constantly shunted to the side and put down and she wants everyone to see her for how she feels she is - “the only thing i wish i knew was how to make them see the girl that i can be” she wants them to “gimme a shot to show what i’ve got” But again i think the line of is this a “i want” song is very subjective so each to their own 🤷🏻‍♀️

There are some songs on this list that I wouldn’t really consider to be “I want” songs... An I want song’s purpose is to expose a main character’s core desire which drives the primary plot. It’s a method in which musicals hook their audience and get them to empathize with the protagonist. I would actually argue that “The Coolest Girl” from avps is an I want song because it reveals Hermione’s core desire and a side to her that we haven’t seen before; it shows us the deepest part of who she is, not just how she’s feeling in that moment. Contrastingly, “Lost Without You” is more about Mouthface expressing how she feels about her current situation and lamenting her mistakes that led her to this point. The same could be said of “Jemilla’s Lament,” “Missing You” “I Was,” and “No One Remembers Achmed.” Anyway not trying to hate, I just enjoy over-analyzing musical theatre semantics haha. Great job on the video!
