Barbara is one of my favorite companions. I especially like the dynamic between her and the Doctor. At first there was so much animosity between them, but they wound up developing a close relationship. I like how she really challenged his behavior and stood up to him. If anyone was most responsible for the character development the first Doctor went through, it was Barbara.

I've heard people say that there were no good companions until the new series. I tell them they obviously haven't watched the old series. Especially episodes where Barbara is a companion. She was such an amazing character (especially for the 60s, which loved to stereotype women)! She was motherly and protective of Susan, but she wasn't weak. She stood up to the Doctor, held the Aztec priest at knife-point, ran over Daleks in a truck... Weak people don't do that. She was brave and willful and I was genuinely sad to see her go. RIP Jacqueline Hill. You are missed.

Cryer24597 Wasn't Jo Grant one of the ones who the stereotype is based on?
@yumihoshiko4969 жыл бұрын
Cryer24597 Agreed. In fact, I don't remember her even screaming much and most critisism I've seen/heard of Jo had more to do with her "lack of intelligence" rather than any lack of bravery.
@theflagrespawns76959 жыл бұрын
Cryer24597 Claw of Axos involves her having a massive screaming fit at the end, with the Doctor having to try to calm her down. But I agree, I think she was the most accurate companion in a way, if you put a normal human in those situations they'd probably behave just like Jo Grant.

TheFlagRespawns Well, I didn't say she never screamed, just that I didn't remember her doing so 'much'.

Barbara being absolutely ba.dass starting at 3:15! She was a great companion - smart, brave and compassionate. The way she cared about the Aztecs trying to change their fate, stooding up to the Doctor, was one of her finest moments. Although almost every moment of her was worthy. For all I saw of Doctor Who until now, I put Barbara among the best five companions (I've saw the new series and the three first seasons of the old one), but even if the others come, she'll always have a special place in my heart. RIP Jacqueline Hill, you were the best. P.S.: Let's appreciate for a moment her amazing Yetaxa's clothes and her exceptional hair.

Every now and then I come back to this fanvids. It's one of my favorite in any fandom, and I've been a Who fan since 1983.

What a wonderful song choice! She and Ian were such a great duo, miss them both so much! And Barbara was a really strong woman 💪🏼

She's a legend! She was the person who spoke the first words on the show, and she was the first companion ever to set foot in the TARDIS. She's brilliant. I still haven't watched The Chase because I don't wanna see her and Ian go ;(

Then you're missing the Doctor not wanting her and Ian to leave. All those episodes griping about getting them back to Earth, and when they finally have the chance to do it, he says it's too dangerous and generally balks. Then, after they're gone, he says simply, "I will miss them." Hartnell's performance is spot-on.

Barbara was amazing. Her character was a proper “strong female lead” by just being Barbara. I think she worked so well and felt so real because, according to her friend and neighbor, Jacqueline’s personality was very close to Barbara’s.

The Aztecs was not only one of Doctor Who's best episodes (and I think the best historic story) but Barbara's finest hours...and the costume WAS awesome!

Great tribute to who is, in my opinion, the single best character in 54 years of Doctor Who. It's always made me sad that the Barbara and Ian era has had so little resurgence in the 52 years since it ended (compared to say, the Third or Fourth Doctors' eras, which get referenced all the damn time). It features some of the most sophisticated character work ever attempted on Doctor Who, and deserves so much more recognition than it gets. I really hope Steven Moffat uses Twice Upon a Time as a chance to throw in some references to this golden age of Doctor Who (and unless proven otherwise, I'm going to with my headcanon that the memory of Barbara is what inspires the Doctor to become a woman :P).

One of the best character tributes I've seen in any fandom. A great vid for a fantastic character: you reminded me why I love Barbara so much. I especially enjoyed the changing meaning of "take us home" as Barbara herself changes.

Many episodes were lost, but the ones that remain are quite good (given the budget constraints and if you discount some poor fight choreography in some of them).
