Great question, didn't think of that. I just tried it out. Yes, it works great with the lid shut and locked. I just ran an advanced speed test and got 197 Mbps down, 12 up with the lid closed! Really impressive stuff!
@greatguy2003
@greatguy2003 5 ай бұрын
@@StarlinkHardware of course the advanced speed test also reports the WiFi link speed between your device and the router. But you're saying the 197 Mbps was from the Internet?
@StarlinkHardware

@@greatguy2003 Yes that was the Starlink to internet speed. I was inside about 30-40 feet away so the WiFi speed and regular speed test was pretty slow.
@greatguy2003
@greatguy2003 5 ай бұрын
@@StarlinkHardware hey not trying to be rude or anything, but I think you might have it backward. If the WiFi speed is slow, there's no way the Starlink to Internet test can be faster. Again, respectfully. Thanks for your videos. I'd love it if you can stand right next to the unit, then try one "regular" speed test with it open and one regular test with it closed! Or use the Speedtest app to avoid the Starlink app confusion altogether!

When I worked for the cable industry in 2016 I warned them that their plan to become an internet pipe when apps replaced TV wouldn't work with Starlink. I picked up a Mini a short time ago for camping and photography excursions. Just this past weekend (New Years Eve day, no less), construction activity severed the fiber trunk line to my area. Figured what the heck, let's see if the Mini will get us by. I set it up about 30 feet from the house and was able to connect two desktop Macs, two iPhones, and our TV (just in time for the college bowl games). My wife also had airline tickets on 'hold' that needed to be confirmed by a deadline. Ran effortlessly all day long, with no buffering of the TV broadcast, and the wife managed to lock in her airline tickets. Pretty impressive, to say the least.

I like a cigarette lighter socket to Ryobi 18V tool battery socket adapter. It makes the cig socket 18V, but the 100W PD car charger that plugs into it takes 12-24V without issue. Then I can run laptops and phones off tool batteries. Also, you could run Starlink directly off the 18V from the tool battery, I think, given that it accepts 12-48V DC input.

Decided to try to run my Mini from my EGO leaf blower battery. Get approx 12hr instead of 3 hr. The EGO battery is 56 v so I need a DC-DC converter to get the voltage under 50 volts. They make an EGO Battery Adapter, I plan to mount the DC to DC converter on the adapter. I have two EGO batteries and charger so no added cost there. Expect to always be close to my RV, so added size is not that big of a deal. The batteries will fit in my RV Starlink drawer.

I think the main issue is that people have so many types of USB-C devices. Starlink says the requirement is USB-C that can deliver 20V at 5 amps. That's 100 watt output. Only more recent USB-C devices can output that much. I've heard from several viewers that 60 and 65 watt USB-C ports aren't working with the Mini. It's probably not the cable itself, because it's extremely simple. It's that people are trying to use power sources that aren't compatible with the Mini's requirements.

This is a great kit. I think I will build something similar but using the Jackery Explorer 100 Plus if it can fit in the case. It's 99wh which would be about 30'000mah giving a little more run time per charge and it has LiFePO4 batteries with a 100w solar charge controller built in. It's not really much bigger than the Anker at 4.9"x3.4"x3.4" so should be another good option. I have a 60w portable solar panel so I can see all this working well together.
@jamierichardson46
@jamierichardson46 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for comment about Jackery Explorer 100. I'm just in the planning stages, and this seems to solve a few more scenarios: 1) Passthrough: Most USB power banks do not have passthrough. It's unclear if the Anker referenced does passthrough (alternatively, the Anker 737 24k seems to allow it). I can imagine a scenario where you are charging it in the car but want to use it simultaneously. 2) Solar: The Jackery Explorer 100 certainly can have solar charging while using it. With a solar panel (say 40w+), you could be completely off grid much longer (not 100% of course). Certainly a bigger power station could run it 100%, but that is not as portable.
@jeffgendron1959
@jeffgendron1959 3 ай бұрын
@@jamierichardson46 Yeah I agree, great points. Using an actual solar generator rated power station like the little Jackery opens more options especially if you want to run nonstop with solar during the day. The Jackery is rated for 100w USB PD so if the Starlink mini was doing a lot of work pulling close to its max of 60w that might limit the amount the overall USB charge input or taking in solar. Not sure exactly how that would work out but could be another condition in that setup.

@StarlinkHardware
@StarlinkHardware 5 күн бұрын
Yes, you can access the Starlink app and the Starlink website directly through the dish connection, even if you don't have a plan. The main problem is logging in to Starlink or creating an account. They have 2FA enabled, so you need to get a login code by email or SMS to log in. That requires cell service or internet, and can't be done through the Starlink connection without active service. The workaround is to set everything up first, then pause the Starlink service. Keep yourself logged in to the app and check it periodically. Then, when needed, you can use the app to reactivate service through the dish connection.

With the thicker foam pad installed, you do have to kind of press down on the lid while disengaging the latch. Otherwise the upward pressure from the foam makes it difficult to open the latch. Try the thinner piece of foam that comes in the case and take out the thicker one, see if that helps. Might have to trim down the thicker foam piece if there is too much wiggle room with the thin piece.

I wonder if it's possible to activate the mini if I'm offshore? Considering this as an emergency back-up for my boat when I'm crossing oceans, so wondering if I'd need to activate it first (I really hope note), or if I could activate it IF I need it in an emergency if I'm 100's+ of miles offshore.... any ideas?
@StarlinkHardware

All Starlink units provide access to Starlink.com and the Starlink app through the dish, without active service or cell signal. However, it's best to have it already set up with Starlink, with your service plan paused. With the new 2-step login system, you need an email or SMS code to log in to Starlink.com. If you are already logged in through the app, you can get around this, but it's still risky if you ever get logged out for whatever reason. I hope Starlink fixes this soon and allows some way to bypass the 2 step login process in certain conditions. Also keep in mind, you will need Mobile Priority for ocean access. Roam plans don't work more than 12 miles from shore.

So how are you paying for the access? Do you have to pay every month while it sits on your shelf waiting for an emergency? I have heard you can pause the service for when not in use. Is there a limit on how long you can pause it? I mean if you bought this for emergencies and paused the service immediately after setting it up, then did not have an emergency need for 4 years, would you still be able to unpause and use it?
@StarlinkHardware
@StarlinkHardware 2 ай бұрын
You can pause service to avoid paying monthly until you need it. And then unpause when needed via the app. Like any other emergency item, it’s best to plan for some period maintenance. For example, plan to get it out and turn it on every year to check the battery bank and allow Starlink to update software. These kinds of routine preparations can help avoid issues for when you actually need it.

Great video! The first thing I did was click on your links and buy the Ankler power bank and then realized when I bought it that you need the charger base to charge it, which your link was for the bank only. After purchasing it I then got a link for the newer model so I ended up sending it back for that one which included the power base. I don't know how you would work it without the power base?- as it has to be charged up and then there is the issue would there be room in this case for the base as well?

This doesn't help if it's raining out like crazy. The OEM starlink cable has a rubber grommet built into it, so in my opinion you should use the cable that it comes with for use in outdoor wet environments, and then run a female to female coupler to go to usb-c to whatever your power bank is

Starlink allows people to access Starlink.com and use the Starlink app through the dish connection, so you can activate your service without other internet if needed. My recommendation is to activate your plan, test your dish to make sure it works, and then pause the subscription. That way it will be ready to go if you need it, with a simple “unpause” swipe in the app.

With adapters, I've tried to power my Starlink Mini direct to 12 volts (truck battery), also to a 100 watt USB C source, neither worked. I see on a KZbin video that someone boosted the 12v to 36v, is this necessary? Doesn't Starlink say the voltage range is 12-48?
@StarlinkHardware
@StarlinkHardware 5 ай бұрын
It’s not necessary, but with 12V you can’t use the included 50ft cable. Too much voltage drop. You need a shorter 10-15ft cable. As for the 100W USB-C, make sure it outputs 20V at 5 amps, as that is the spec Starlink gives. Could also be an incompatible cable. The one linked in the description is verified working with the Mini.

Direct to cell will be just basic text messaging for at least the first year. Starlink and T-Mobile plan to slowly add more bandwidth as more DTC satellites are launched. They will add voice call support in 2026, with slow data speeds after that. The Mini, on the other hand, is available now and will have much higher data performance compared to using DTC. They are for two very different use cases.
