This is not a milestone. This is what happens when you are the only user in the area using the bandwidth. Satellite internet is like cable internet. When nobody is using it, the bandwidth is high but when the whole neighborhood is on it, the bandwidth is crap. So yes for now this is great for the price but down the road it is going to be no better than the speeds you get with DSL/cable while you are still paying $100 plus.

@@librab103 You're right but not quite. First of all, there's not that many other people out on the water, and sharing this bandwith with 10 or 20 others is perfectly fine; not everyone is using full speed at the same time. And more importantly, the latency. Ping for regular satellite internet is at least 800ms, sometimes much more. Starlink is shown to have 30-ish ms of ping, which is a gamechanger. (At least I think they are not able to communicate to each other yet). If the boat is in rough waters, do not expect to get a good signal or one at all. The small things that move inside to keep pointed at a satellite have a limited range. Not sure what the limit is. @@tonylouvat5337 The vertical movement shouldn't matter, true. But only on boats and mainly monohulls you get a lot of tilt, front to back, side to side, by up to 30 deg in high swells so I guess maybe that would be an issue. If it was on the roof of your house and after it locked on you got up there and started tilting the dish 30 deg forward back, side to side would it loose lock?! Definitely a gamechanger for middle of the ocean weather updates so hopefully it ends up as awesome as it looks
@solandri692 жыл бұрын
@@JunoSolarWinds Just to reiterate what Tony Louvat said. It's a phased array antenna. It's "aimed" using software - it does not have to physically move, but is instead "pointed" using just math. It can be "pointed" in a different direction almost instantaneously, or even after the fact if you've got enough RAM. The military uses them to track dozens or even hundreds of targets simultaneously (a single antenna can "point" at all those targets at once). If you look at pics of the Ticonderoga class cruisers, the octagonal plates you see on the front and sides are the phased array antennas. Because it's aimed in software, what really matters is how much processing power you have. More processing power = more simultaneous targets which can be tracked, or how quickly it can search around an expected position to find a target it's lost track of. If it's coupled with a good set of gyros that greatly reduce the error in the tracking, dealing with swells should be almost trivial. As an amateur astronomer, it kills me that Starlink is messing up astronomy. But it is such a game-changer that I think the loss to astronomy will be worth the gain to global communications (directional communications via phased array also means you bypass the Shannon limit for max bandwidth of a shared communication channel).
@JunoSolarWinds2 жыл бұрын
@@solandri69 Oh cool, I didn't know that was what phased array means. Thank you for that, hopefully once they're settled into their orbits they don't mess up your observations too much. The satellites will of course work out on the ocean (if there are no geo restrictions anymore), but when you are far enough from land in won't work. At some point the satellite you are connected to can't also connect to a groundstation that connects it to the internet. The latest generation of Starlink satellites will solve this problem by having laser links between each satellite, so a signal can bounce between a number of satellites until it reaches one that is connected to the internet. But, SpaceX haven't launched very many V1,5 sats yet, and it'll probably be a little while until the laser links are fully operational. A 2 second google search shows that Puerto Rico is set to receive coverage this year and since the coverage is increasing from north to south it is probably safe to assume that nowhere south of that has coverage yet and everywhere north of Puerto Rico will have coverage by the years end, assuming Starlink launches continue.
