I live 4 miles/6km or so from town and even with modern LTE, I get about 30 megabits. But before that, roughly 4 years back, my old ISP got bought out. Clamped a 25 megabit radio to 0.5 megabits. So, I got to live with half a megabit for almost a decade. Half of ONE megabit. Took me half a year to get fallout 4 and that was after an update to shrink it. It was originally estimated at 2.5 years. And it wasn't wrong either. That's only downloading when I could at night (You can't really "share" half a megabit between downloads and regular use). Fun times.

@librab1032 жыл бұрын
It isn't a leap. We have satellite internet. The only reason starlink users are getting great bandwidth and low latency is because nobody else in their area is using it. I compare it to cable internet in that when nobody else in your area is on it, you get great speeds but as more people are using it, your bandwidth drops and your latency goes up. Running a satellite internet service isn't cheap hence why SpaceX is doing another funding round. SpaceX would need millions of users to break even but at the cost of bandwidth and latency per user.

@@grambo1980 yes, currently it is the best bang for the buck but it isn't going to last. Also it isn't priced for many people who just need a stable Internet connection. My wife and I love to travel with our kids. So we got Starlink for our RV and I also got one for my hunting cabin of course lol. Starlink works great. My kids play their games online on multiple devices or consoles at the same time in the RV and Starlink holds up just great. And the same goes for my hunting cabin. My teenage son and daughter like to go stay in the cabin during hunting season or in the summer when I do stuff on our land. Before we got Starlink I had a couple NETGEAR Nighthawk MR 1100 that I used to connect our stuff to when on the road or in the woods. Those worked great and still have them. @@chrisrichfield8906 So basically if you have a power station that holds 2000 watts for example since your laptop takes 180 watts per hour you’ll be able to play the laptop for 11 hours without recharging, and possibly slightly longer if you have a solar panel plugged in. (Math: Since the laptop is 19.5V and 9.23 amp you multiply the Volt and amps to get how many watts per hour your device takes. Volt x Amp = Watt Hours. Also if you get a power station, when you plug it in it will show you how many hours it will be able to power that device, so keep In mind how much power you need. Im not too great at explaining things and made this comment pretty long😅 but hope I answered your question!

A roofless gaming setup in the middle of the mountains with a real gaming chair, now THIS guy knows. To imagine that satellite-based internet relays have been a thing for decades but were a symbol of horrendous lag back in the days. I even remember a test at uni that was based on demonstrating that very fact, numbers were scary, we were talking entire SECONDS of lag (which means plain screen freeze when gaming, a bit like borderline hard disconnect, in case you're wondering) sometimes because of the way TCP tries to correct itself in space in case of packet loss or corruption :D ANd moving dishes were also a thing in live tv broadcast trucks, but what's cool with Starlink is that basically anybody could theoretically afford that kind of hardware, which is kinda cool (assuming it doesn't end up like Tesla of course.)
