Thanks James. Walked by Bowie's apartment today - still flowers there, very moving - and came home to this. Nice.

James James - i've been following you for three years - ive never played in a band, or even in front of anybody live. You single-handedly have inspired me so much you have no idea. I listened to your "last video" as the other guy and am really glad you didn't quit all together. Thanks man, you are the nazz!

So happy that you are still doing these vids! Thanks for providing such awesome lessons! You make it so easy to follow even when it's just you playing along with the recording and not saying anything. Keep chuckling too! :)

You just taught me (and a bunch of people, no doubt) how to play this song. ! So great. Is it just me or is the part where it goes from D minor to A minor to A minor 7 to C to C7 then back to F a remarkably elegant progression? Thanks so much for this excellent lesson.

Great lesson, as always. One little tip though. The Bflat chord in the intro is a bit of a bizarre one. He basically slides the Fmaj7 shape up to the 6th fret leaving the high E string open. It's a simple little thing but gives the intro that jarring quality that it has. He also did something like this in the Space Oddity intro where he played an F major chord with both E strings open then going to Em. I never would've figured that one out if I hadn't seen the tabs in a guitar mag in the early 90's.

+Joe McKagan I wouldn't trust tabs, but I'll trust your ear.

+James James I hear ya! I've been playing for 28 years and love the fact that I never stop learning. I first bought the Ziggy album in '90 and every time I think I've got something down, I'll watch a video like yours (especially the Zep stuff) and think "Ahh, now THAT sounds right, not what I was doing before"! It just never ends. Give that B flat chord a try though. It's almost like he played the open high E by accident and decided to leave it in there!

+ joe mckagan- trevor bolder(bassist) famously grabbed the 5 chord half a bar early on "jean genie"- they left it in and trevor relates, in video, that he was requested to play it that way always. happy accident can lend cool dissonance. and that was bowie's thing- if it sounds good, it's right. like the modulation section of R&R Suicide-suprising chord changes. genius. and, james, you figured out what a genius wrote, by ear. genious junior. nigel tufnel would be impressed. ; ^ )

JJ, what do you have your iPad split to and are you getting L R channel separation? I'm interested in something small, portable or even BT speaker if I can get L/R channel separation.

You blow me way..my son has been asking me to teach it to him the last few days..that full bar Gm is a hard chord for a kid. Can you give any advice about getting the thumb over for the bass notes..is it just a matter of how big your hand is ? or is there a way you can gradually get it happening ?
@jamesjames92758 жыл бұрын
+tweed guitar I just posted a lesson on Rush (Big Audio Dynamite) that might help with trying the thumb-over-the-top chords.
@tweedguitar91038 жыл бұрын
+James James Thanks. it makes sense as the wrist/hand angle is much straighter/flatter than the "beatles" bar chord shapes, making it easier on the wrist I would think. the open and first position thumb over shapes, also look easier on the fretting hand wrist. Looking at the way you play the Bb and the F chord your wrist is dead straight . Thank you for your help. cheers

+tweed guitar Just barre the 3rd fret on all 6 strings for your very easy Gm7 substitution. He does exactly the same thing with the A minor barred at the 5th fret here.
