I live in a flat for the over 55's and there's a lot of us in this block of flats mostly over 70 mostly women. When I talk to them or we talk together most are scared to death of going into hospital because they think the NHS is probably compromised to finish us off so we go into hospital but we never come out unless it's in a wooden box. Now you would think this is ridiculous but after the government via mattancock managed to kill off tens of thousands of elderly people during the alleged cv19 and the pandemic that ensued. I personally would not want to go into hospital is too easy to say oh unfortunately he was a bit old and he died under anesthetic. When a government can assist in the death of over 40,000 elderly people without any querms do you think they are really going to give a flying flock if a few thousand people threesome death in their houses this winter? Starmer went to the Americans and saw Biden to see if they would assist in British missiles to fire deep into Russia therefore bringing us and the whole world very close if not into and unavoidable nuclear war Labour and Starmer do not care about you and me.

We had a 22 billion pound hole in the economy - and to tackle it we let Milliband spend another 11 billion giving it away to foreign countries to support them going green, We gave our union mates - you know the train drivers a nice big rise so they don't have to scrape by on £65K - they now earn £70K, Of course we like the Doctors so let them have a 22% rise too - so with their private work they should be able to get to the end of the month on well over £120K per year. It was purely a political decision, it was done in spite, because he knows that most pensioners would not vote for this Labour government. I am 80 worked hard all my life I have never ever relied on any benefits. I brought up 5 children without any help. In fact in those days if you didn't work you didn't eat. Now I am on my own and have a small works pension, which takes me just over the threshold to get any pension credits and it is a struggle to manage when you have to pay over £500 a month rent out of my pension. then with heating which for me it isn't an option to cut down as I have breathing problems, so it would be detrimental to breath cold air. This lying uncaring government are looking after themselves. The money they spend on a night out is probably a weeks grocery for a pensioner. What I can't understand is how can Starmer and Reeves and the rest of the cabinet claim winter fuel allowance for 1st and 2nd homes when none of them are even pensioner age. It's nice when you can get so many freebies in a job at the expense of pensioner's.

My daughter opens up the Rec Club she runs, each Winter for those who need some warmth, including free hot drinks, porridge pots, warm showers etc. She shouldn't have to. Everyone has a basic human right to be warm and safe, which sadly many aren't any more. 😒

I am 88 and losing the WF payment will mean little or nothing to me. I am prepared to trust the government until there are failings in the programme, ie some suffer as a result. I'm not convinced people will die, or some will have to choose between heat or eat. I expect those who need it will get it until the EVIDENCE shows they're not. WHY? I believe the energy expended in shouting about Winter Fuel payment would better be spent on trying to obtain a decent pension. Countries, like Spain, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein sll have lower average cost of living than the UK AND all have significantly higher state pensions. WE need better State pensions. Staty shouting about that and no one will need hand outs like WFP or be treated like Ducks having peas chucked at them.

Thanks for joining the debate. Re winter deaths, the figures for 2021/22 showed that 43 people a day died from cold homes, that's was something like 13,000 in total. And that was with the WFP.

No windfall tax on oil companies, crude prices are down, profits per anum more than doubled prior to the major hike, and progressively increasing year on year (10% per year). Reeves etc were examining the potential for reducing winter payments almost a decade ago?
