Jaga (the witch - the title character) was freed from hell through the actions of another character introduced in the earlier part. These films are based on Slavic mythology, Polish history and literature. These are simply the roots of Polishness. Perun is an ancient pre-Christian god of thunder at a time when the Slavs worshiped ancient trees and groves. Jaga is a combination of witches and children's literature. Witches were called old, so-called knowing women who often treated people with herbs. The Church persecuted them and sometimes burned them at the stake. The legend said that witches fly on brooms and meet on Łysa Góra, dancing naked there all night long.

notice that female vocals when she wakes up- this is special traditional slavic singing called white voice/white singing. it's special type of voice emitting, sometimes compared more to sing-speach but with full flow of air through vocal system from depth of the lungs. i cant explain it in english, try google it. what is for me kind of similar (if fact it's different technique tho) is mongolian throat singing

Allegro (a company like Amazon in Poland) have sponsored a series of short movies covering old Polish legends. But with a twist from the creators: Imagine that: Once Poland was Christianized, the old demons and pagan gods/goddesses were imprisoned in Hell, as with the advent of Christianity the Hell, real Hell, entered the scene. And the guys from Hell represent a corporate entity. They are serious, they are a corporation, and they mean business. You don't f**k with them. Boruta is the director, Rokita is his right-hand man. They locked up all the pre-Christian demons and deities, and started to lure human (Polish) souls to hell. No time for amateurs. The Hell has opened business in Poland. That's the background story, more or less. Yaga is one of the most powerful, pre-Christian demons. Perun (the god of thunder) is the top deity, but it's not clear how they got him. One thing is for sure: they are afraid of him. Very afraid.

Yaga refers to Baba Yaga, a mythological Slavic woman who is a mixture of what real witches were (knowing herbal medicine, cures etc.) and a supernatural, slightly devilish old woman who flies on a broomstick. And the movie is just part of sa series that depicts Polish/Slavic legends (including Baba Yaga) in a modern setting. It is half-comedic, half-dramatic, half-joking and light, and half-serious and heavy. it is a real pity that only so few were created. For instance the legend about Mr. Twardowsky (Pab Twardowski in Polish) was made into two parts, and the third part was suppoed to be made, but the funds were gone (or they droped the idea, I am not sure). And I am certain the third part would be even better than excellent parts 1 and 2. Also, in all of those movies some of famous Polish actors play. 🙂

Jaga or Yaga is a very intresting character form slavic mythology. She was shown as a old and evil and terryfing woman but also sometimes as a very kind woman helping people and healing them. She is known in pop culture for example John Wick was called Baba Yega by russian mafia. But no matter how she was shown she was always a very powerful demon/goddess.
@christopherkowalczyk44053 ай бұрын
I've seen theories that Baba Yaga was a prime deity before the Slavic pantheon took the form it had before Christianity came to the region. She was relegated to the status of a monster or force of nature in the same way that local gods were rebranded as demons when populations became Christians. It would make sense with the archeological record of populations coming out of the steppes and removing or merging with populations in different parts if Europe in the Neolithic era.

I think you'd have more fun watching if you went with the order (somebody already mentioned the order in comments) and if you read a bit first about the legends these videos retell in a modern way - there are many references (like even the tiny detail that right after they mention Perun and a risk that Jaga might let him out of his cell, there's a lightning - Perun in Slavic mythology was a lot like Thor in Nordic mythology). Those films are short but packed :)

"The figure of Baba Yaga (Yaga), probably originally important in Slavic mythology, survived only in a degraded form as an element of folklore. She appears there as an old, hideous witch (sagging breasts, one bone leg, blind or visually impaired), living in a hut on a chicken's foot deep in the forest. Baba Yaga was often accompanied by a black cat, a raven, an owl or a snake. She kidnapped people wandering in the forest (especially children), then murdered and ate them. She was also credited with sending diseases and other ailments. At the end of the story, she usually fought a fight with the positive hero and died. Occasionally in folklore there is a motif of the gracious Baba Yaga helping people." Translate from Polish Wikipedia.
@christopherkowalczyk44053 ай бұрын
I've seen theories that Yaga was the original main deity for the Slavic regions. A personification of nature, it can nurture or destroy you. And like you said she was relegated to a lower level when new tribes from the steppes brought their religion that has the sky father (Perun) as the main or major deity.

Original Baba Jaga was a very powerful witch, who learnt the witchcraft from the god of undergroung and realm of dead called Weles. Weles in old time was equal to Perun and often pictured as his opponent. Jaga in this movie is more of combination of other Slavic goddesses like Mokosz. All our goddeses were equal to gods, powerfull, proud and not affraid to fight. Our old god and goddesses always lived in synchrony with nature. Same for smaller fantastic creatures like gnoms, elfs (rusalki), various beasts. Catholic church turned them into demons, evil spirits and where they couldn't get rid of them, they incorporated into religious practices as a part od cult of Mother of God or Easter etc. Even though we no loger practice or remember those gods and godesses, they are still deeply embeded in our culture, language, traditions and deep love for nature and forest. Freedom is something deeply embeded in our souls and hearts just like those old gods, even if we do not remember them...
