Quit apologizing for pointing out other’s mistakes!!! These videos are SUPER informative, and I learn something new every time I watch these. You are a pro, and it’s important to point out the difference between a pro, and some goon with a tile trowel! Keep the videos coming, we really appreciate them. Also, is there somewhere we can message you for advice/questions? Definitely willing to pay for your time!

I bought a new house built 4 years ago and I want to change from carpet to tile but I know my neighbors have problems with their tile floor since the the concrete slab still settling the tile have developed a hair line from wall to wall right where the cracks in the new slab were, and it had happen to several people that I know but I know that their is a way to do it, like a floating tile installation, but I don't know much about it and I am scared to pay to getting it done just to find a crack a few years later and the warranty is expired, any suggestions what to ask for and what kind of questions should I ask the contractor, thank you sir your videos are send from heaven to a guy like me who don't know much about tile work, looking forwards to your advice
@StarrTile8 жыл бұрын
You'll need an uncoupling membrane like Schluter, then any cracking of slab will not transfer through to your tile.

...and this is why i love the olden days.. umm 20’s 30’s 60’s.. there were apprentices.. eg. on the job training.. and even the 70’s there were trade schools IN HIGH SCHOOLS.. Today we have inspiring entrepreneur’s that learn as they go at the expense of ginny-pig home owners who pay out the bumm for shady workmanship for those that earn the reputation of “Handy-Man-Jack of all trades” Sadly.. so many are to blame for this... going backwards we can start with removing skill trades from schooling, now you need to have money to go learn a trade and there are many scam-artists eager to provide eager students with student loans for trade school.. (complete money grab) when this training was provided as public education along with auto tech, home economics, etc.. Shady work is what society created with inspiring unskilled entrepreneur’s...

In the late 80s, early 90s, I worked as general labor for small remodeling contractors. They had me do tile work because I said "Sure, I can do that!". Some (but not all) of those tile jobs were horrendous! That was my learning experience.... a lot of what not to do. But I never did anything nearly as bad as that shower. Mine at least looked good on the surface, long enough for the contractor to get paid.

I took a shot at tiling an 8x9 laundry room with 17" tiles. At least it's not a shower! Lol. I'm a handyman, but I usually fix more mechanical things like leaks, electrical, appliances, etc. I have an eye for detail and know just enough to be dangerous with some things. Anyway, I don't think my tile is bad. I've been taking my time, but it's not great either. Is it possible to get tiles that are not all exactly the same? Because I have some areas where my lines are off just a little bit. Lippage is negligible (the room is not flat so I floated in areas). Again as I said it's not a shower, or a place that will be wet all the time, but I did tie in a drain in the middle of the floor. I figure even if the drain is exactly right, in the event of a leak, it will still be better to have water going out rather than nowhere. All that to say, doing great tile is not easy. But I think I did better than this guy. :O

the best thing for a homeowner is to do the research. not just tile contractor but the whole process. my wife hired her coworker's husband who is a handyman. i watched as they nailed the hardibacker to the walls. the boards were not flushed against each other and not leveled. they didnt want to redo it. after arguing with them about it, i decided to fire them. of course i did loose the half upfront money but at least i caught it before they started to tile.

I have a customer that has three showers where the pans and tile are all built incorrectly. All curbs are too short. One is only one 2x4 high, two are two high. None are angled. tile has lippage, 2x4 mosaic tile on the curbs, grout not cleaned off the floor etc etc........I feel where your coming from!

I just found your Chanel been watching it a lot, your not perfect as we (my company) are not. But I love to see this vids a bit long but it's funny. I truly can't understand how people let this contractors do the work for them, even before they start laying the tile major red flags. Plus I'd like to know how much they charge. I've lost a lot of jobs cause of lower bids, I always wonder how good of a job they did. Tip: take classes from Schluter their free, that's the main area you are complete in.
@StarrTile8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment, much appreciated and taken well, however I do not and will not use Kerdi Schluter products... they are way overpriced and most of the people that use them the company sales people like yourself. For me to use that product on a typical shower will cost my customer in excess of $600 to $800, and in some cases more, that's ridiculous. And yes I am well aware that the classes are free, that's how they get you to buy their product, a little brainwashing goes a long way. Back 20 plus years ago when I did HVAC, Trane also has free classes, in fact they will even put you in a hotel for free, why do you think that is ?
@juanrules19928 жыл бұрын
StarrTile Yes they pay for the hotel and steak dinners but you don't have to buy anything in fact you can't buy any Schluter products during the classes even if you wanted to. I just think the more you know the better. Price is not 600 to 800 maybe if you buy retail but you should not be buying retail if you send me a private message I could let you know prices if you don't already have them. We use it in all remodels we do, to the customer the total price difference is around 200 ( less than $100 if you buy a lot at a time). Plus is faster and it take all the warranties of your hands. Many times it makes the difference and separates us from the rest, most customers don't mind paying the couple hundred more.
@trippleslots7 жыл бұрын
We used wedi shower kit and found it within dollars of what the cost would be if using a conventional method You can easily spend 6=800 on a pan alone I will say Wedi Board does appear to be for easier to use than Schluter

There's no shower pan. Therefore there's no slope to the drain. You float drypac to a slope of 1/8th per foot. Then you put the shower pan in. Then you float the walls with phatmud. Then you float the curb and shower floor to slope to the drain cap. After that's all dry you're ready to sell tile.

The tile guy certainly was under skilled, but unless your the contractor who hired him this looks like this was a multi team project so error is miscommunication in the construction process. If an individual is responsible for this bathroom I find it hard to believe he made it that far in the project without knowing common sense. #1 is schluter products from Kerdi to shower pan and curb, and # 2 is if you don’t specialize in tile installs leave it to the professionals. If you are the contractor Shame on you for being a cheap skate and hiring a handy man. Know who your hiring, instead of paying Miguel 9 bucks and hour you never paid him only to sham him on KZbin for who the fuck knows why I watched your video
