In the end, all that matters is what the song means to you. That being said, my current (incomplete) interpretation is that "dead hearts" represents lost dreams or people who are unable to fulfill their dreams - you put your heart into your dreams, after all. You normally have "lights in your eyes" when you're passionate about something, and windows and doors closing are lost opportunities. The "kids I once knew" are all the people you grow up with who will never achieve true happiness.
