There it is again. The game that keeps on giving. I spent what... maybe $15 on this when it was called Starfarer almost a decade ago and have had hundreds and hundreds of hours of fun with this game. The writing is really rather good for the story, keeps a mystical edge to the sci fi setting that answers one question with two more questions. It is also insanely moddable with just a text editor. Highly recommended for anyone who's a fan of space simulators.

Hey its not like working for a triple A is bad its just that I see it as a quality dump because devs dont get their full potential working for others than making their own project but yeah they need the money to not starve to death. 💀💀💀 Such is life.

A must play for anyone who is a fan of top-down space combat games. there are very few titles that scratch this itch and I think none that offer the depth of Starsector. The combat needs getting used to even if you are a Escape Velocity (or similar) vet, but well worth the time to learn it. It's of those rare games where the learning curve is worth the climb and once the base game is 'done', you have an entire galaxy worth of mods to delve into. While this is still 'under development', I consider it as good as a full release with new features added with enough frequency and quality to make the piddling sum you will pay for it well worth your money AND time. I have bought the game myself almost a decade ago and bough for friends as well, so I can attest to the security of the website.

Alex has stated before he' not really against putting the game on Steam, but if or when he does, it will only be when he sees the game's development as being 'finished'. With the 1.0 release candidate getting closer and closer, maybe that day will come sooner than we think. Of course he could just go from '0.9.7' to '0.10.0' just to troll us. - Should also be noted that you can turn off the 'whiteout' effect when ships are destroyed inside of the settings options. Used to have to go into the game files itself to disable the whiteout but was changed last patch, so that's definitely welcome.

Love me some Starsector! The only bad thing about autofit for frigates and destroyers is if they don't have any decent weapons in the store they give you garbage weapons that you might as well leave them unmounted. The other issue is some weapons are better at taking out shields and some are better at hull damage. You really need to balance them to be at least a tiny bit effective at battle. If your going to autofit, do not try to be a badass. It will end badly.

@@turosechil8798 Wow, I don't even really know what to say to you if you think that Starsector's base game is "barebones". Like, I'm honestly kind of confused here? @turosechil8798
@turosechil8798 Жыл бұрын
@@rerver8842 Well there is galaxy generation (number of stars danger level etc) but also some mods that alter the danger level the further you go from the safe system. Those are essential to a meaningful play trough, otherwise it gets boring quickly once you set up a few colonies. As far as mods that "just add ships" those exist but im more interested in those that add factions, they spice the game up quite alot for me since some are very unique in their mechanics (which dont really exist in the base game). Another essential is a mod that fixes the ships behaviours, how ships fire when and with what weapons, fixes the engagement range etc. It goes a long way when playing tougher battles (thanks to mods). There are a few mods as well for planetary buildings and building space stations while exploring, those go a long way to fleshing out the game as well. A bit of a wall of text but yeah, base starsector is good but basic or rather not all it could be. I could go on but this is getting lengthy.

Update #2: still crazily obsessed! Now that I know a decent amount about the game and what I'm seeing on the screen, I'd have to caution you against using the Autofit once and letting it ride. That Sunder that you were flying has an LR PD (long range point defense) laser in the same weapon group as the high intensity laser. Autofits work pretty well IF, between the shops and your cargo holds, you have access to all the weapons in the autofit. But the bigger the ship, the lesser the chance that you do. In this case, they stuck a small point defense weapon in a front-facing, medium energy hardpoint. That should probably be another IR autolance, though personally I prefer matching the high intensity laser with two graviton beams to debuff shields and set the stage for some sweet triple laser beam action. It's worth paying close attention to what the autofit WANTS to put in and what it can ACTUALLY put in. If it does something like what happened here, then when you get to another base, try the autofit again. What I end up doing is saving most of the weapons I get, dropping them into storage on my colony, and whenever I get a new ship I head back there to kit it out. If you want to dip your toe into manual builds, what I would suggest is to start with the autofit, run a simulation against a common enemy or enemies, tweak the build, and then run the simulation again. It becomes pretty easy to see problems and weaknesses (at least against that particular enemy), like if your flux is building up too fast, or if you aren't putting out enough shield damage, or if your weapon ranges are mismatched, etc.

I feel you a bit when it comes to customizing the ships. At first it's kind of a lot and deciding what weapons to use by squinting your way through all the little stats is daunting. Having said that, once I got into it I found the customization incredibly rewarding. (Hint: Stop wasting those story points just to get out of sticky spots you could have easily avoided in the first place.) Remember you can go dark and hide in rings... Mods can massively improve your ships and story points can get you permanent extra mods. They are far more valuable as permanent upgrades to your fleet than just avoiding paying a fine or something. Seriously you have not yet begun to unlock the power of your ships if you just let the game outfit them all. Having said that... play however you want! The game excels at letting you do that. I actually do play more as an RTS because I like to micromanage my fleet tactics over all more than controlling every little movement of just one ship. I really respect the way the command points force you to be economical about giving orders that will matter instead of pausing every 5 seconds to fiddle with every ship. You have to learn to give everyone tasks they can actually accomplish and cut 'em loose for a bit. It feels more like actually commanding a fleet instead of being some omniscient fleet hive mind.

The modding community for this game is INSANE. I sunk dozens upon dozens of hours into base Starsector, only to discover the modding community. And it has been one of the greatest finds ever. Highly recommend trying mods after burning through the base game. And modding in this game is as simple as downloading the mod, unzipping it and putting it on the mods folder and enabling it on the Starsector executable!

Played StarSector back in version 0.9 or thereabouts. Really great game. Gives the player almost full agency in so many areas. From the ship loadout to colony management, there's everything in it.

The supplies problem can be solved e.g. by speccing hard into salvage or having own colony that produces supplies.

Yep. Best game. Have had it since Starfarer times and I have no idea how many hours I've put into it. It's just fantastic. Always played it as an RTS, just never really liked the piloting. Kinda says a lot about the game that I still love it to bits.

This! I appreciate how the game still makes it work without the player actually needing to pilot. It really gives that immersive feel of commanding the flagship and the rest of the fleet.

For anyone new to this game, don't be discouraged by the amount of things that you see in this video. You might fail two to three times before getting the hang of it but once you know what does what it's actually pretty simple and intuitive! Oh also for the black market you can hover over the black market tab to pop out tool tip and in the tool tip shows the faction suspicion level of you if I remember correctly. Anyway you should be fine and not be a hunted smuggler as long as you don't get medium or higher suspicion

The developer(s) actually did consider a Steam release, many years ago. Their take on it (paraphrased): "You get one chance to launch your game, so it better be the best launch possible". The game has changed a lot since then. Testing, implementing, optimizing and scrapping ideas. Some systems still aren't completely polished. Version 1.0 might still be a few years away, but it's already an awesome game, specially when modded. It's a a real passion project.

My favorite game at the moment! Was a big fan of Star Control 2 back in the day. I'm on my fourth campaign right now. Have scoped out all the nearby star systems, but couldn't find a system where there is a good military production world and farm/organics world in the same system yet. Far systems are up next.

I just want to make sure everyone knows that this game has a huge modding community and the mods you can get are absolutely top notch When it comes to Mount and Blade, content mods rarely grab my attention... at the end of the day, a sword is still a sword even if it looks fancier But in modded Starsector there are so many wildly different weapons, ships and modules which alter the way you can play the game in very meaningful ways

Starsector is pretty much the spiritual successor of the original SPAZ, really spot on. My only gripe so far playing it has been the missing gaps between the different techs, for example the Buffalo and Atlas vs the Tarsus and Colossus freighters, where is the midline version of these? or for example the fact we dont really have a midline Combat Frigate to go up with the Lasher or Wolf.

More likely that it was inspired by Space Rangers given the dev is Russian. Except everything works and the depth is real and polished in Starsector.

I bought this game around at the same time Star Citizen launched their Kickstarter. One of the two is worth 10x more than the cost of entry and delivered 110% on its promise, while being completely playable the whole time. So many cool game systems that interlink with each other, offers a simulator so you are encouraged to actually try out new builds whenever you are docked at a starbase (unlike the two most recent Battletech games, which punish you heavily for trying out builds). Exploration is scary, but totally worth it. Even losing all of your ships doesn't mean a game over, you just get "rescued" and come back with a smaller scappier random fleet. There are instane mods like Nexerlin that turn it into a fully fledged 4X game (stellaris, total war etc). I'm excited to try out the latest patch and see what story bits they added. Worldbuilding in there is pretty nice, so more of this is great. It's probably one of the best game purchase I've ever made. Absolutely recommend!

Hands down the king. I played Star Trader recently, and some X4 again, and that drove me back to Starsector. Also there are such great mods to make your playthrough even better. For example, NEXERELIN is a great way to play the game. A must for me, along with other big ones like Industry and a couple of extra factions.

Starsector can take a phd to get into, but it's one of the most rewarding gaming experiences available if you're willing to put in the time to experience it. A lot of games claim you can "do anything," but Starsector may be the only game where that's actually true. I spent my first 100 hours in Starsector simply exploring and smuggling, without even touching the combat. How many other games have that sort of depth?

This is one of my favorite games of all time. I vaguely remember playing... I think about a decade ago, back when the only thing you could do was fly around in... I think a single system? and fight pirate fleets. I remember when they added the first simple iteration of the economy simulation system to the game... and just how easy it was to exploit it for massive profit by buying every resource out of a planet's market and then selling it back to them a few days later when the prices shot through the roof. The first mods I downloaded (I miss you Blackrock, I hope you update again one day), the awesome and creative factions that people had put so much effort into designing, to say nothing about Nexerelin, the 4X mod. How hyped I felt for the colonization update, and also how put-off I was with how overpowered it turned out to be on first brush despite the long wait. The massive expeditions I'd lead into the deepest reaches of the sector for loot and adventure. The many, many, many, battles I had with countless pirates, faction military fleets, crazed religious extremists, and who can forget the [REDACTED]. I remember being absolutely blown away with the character building rpg aspects (who else can remember a time when the industry category was just empty, haha), the story point system, and discovering the main storyline. And so many more things I'm forgetting. ...I love this game. And now, thanks to the latest update, there's even more fun to be had :)

Starsector and X4 are the undisputed kings of space-sim RPGs (or whatever you want to call this sub-genre). No other game comes even close to them. - Starsector is just an extremely good overall package that is very polished, has a lot of well made and thought out mechanics and gameplay systems, and has an incredible mod community that transform the game into something extraordinary. It is one of the best games I've ever played. - Meanwhile, X4 is probably the most ambitious space sim to ever come out, that is an actual complete game that can be played properly and delivers on almost all of it's promises (looking at you Star Citizen...). It is a game where you can do everything from flying the humblest of scout ships, to being a commander of a giant battleship with a fleet of hundreds of other ships at your command, and owning a galactic Empire that you can build and manage like it's an RTS game. It is a game with so much simulation and so many different gameplay systems that all interact with each other that it has no right to work as well as it does. It is also a game with a metric ton of jank and bugs, but considering the sheer scope and complexity of X4 it was pretty much unavoidable. And if you asked me what I would've preferred: a one of a kind, buggy game that is so ambitious and massive in scope that no other game dev would even dare to try and make, or a generic and safe space sim, I would always choose the former. So, I recommend Starsector to basically everybody, it's a fantastic game that is way too underpriced. And I recommend X4 to all the fans of the genre, it is the closes you'll get to a "definitive" experience when it comes to those style of games, there is simply no other game out there that does all the things X4 manages to pull off. But also be warned, it is a definition of a diamond in the rough and there is A LOT of rough to get through, but once you there is a truly spectacular diamond underneath it.

STARSECTOOOOOOOOOOOORRR!!! All eyes on Alex, LET'S GOOOOOOOOO! It may not have the fanfare of AAA advertising but Starsector is a game of SUBSTANCE. It's not trying to push the envelope of graphical fidelity and microscopic resolution so realistic it fools security cameras or whatever other arbitrary benchmark some folks obsess over; it's a game of CONTENT, DEPTH and FUN. It does its best to maintain a good challenge level and even when you discover the tricks that dominate, the game still tends to find things to challenge you for a long time. For the asking price you will be hard pressed to get a better deal...and that's just the VANILLA game. The modding community has dropped some crazy gems on this game that are not to be missed. If you have even the slightest interest in space games, sandboxes, blowing stuff up or working your way through politics, intrigue, backstabbing diplomacy or any of that stuff, you owe it to yourself to pick up Starsector. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
