Starset has a general formula. Intros with heavy, low tuned riffs and lot of synths/electronics at the back. Then comes the soft verses with no drums or electronic ones then back into chorus. Second verse usually introduces real drums and a little more elements in the back. Finally the bridge either goes into a breakdown or a little more harsher than the chorus. Icarus' sound is overall sound of the band, it has tonnes of electronic and it mashes it with heavy progressive riffs. There are however heavier songs that pretty much fall into Alternative/Electronic Metal. There are at least 6 or 7 of these Metal style songs. I'd call Frequency a pure Electronic Metal song which has ridiculously low tuned riffs that sounds like dive bombs. It has super dark synths unlike the others and pretty much brutal vocals in the breakdown. Starset is considered Alternative Rock and sometimes Hard Rock, but they love mashing low riffs with electronics, therefore this Icarus is like one of the songs that best represent their overall sound. Not super poppy, not too heavy at the same time.

You're generalizing a lot here. Starset's "formula" like you described it is mostly present in their latest album. The typical Starset bridge is not harsher but more often than not more beautiful, they've done just a few actual Metal-breakdowns. I think Icarus is not the single best song to represent their style. It has abnormally much space (as in lack of sound) as a Starset song. They usually like to have full, busy, "cinematic" sound in their songs, and often with spacey sounding synths. The melodies are usually not as simple in the chorus and not as monotonous in the verses, especially not as monotonous in the bridge. It lacks a longer outro that differs more from the song. Icarus is also pretty slow as a song with such low tuned heavy riffs. And another trait that make it stand out is the anger as the main emotion. Starset's songs are usually sad, epic (motivational), mysterious or sentimental but optimistic. Icarus doesn't represent their sound well. It's still my second favourite from Horizons.

@@ensco7 Starset has that formula on almost 70% of their songs. Vessels was the only album which had a lot of exceptions like Gravity of You, Into The Unknown, Frequency and Back to the Earth; in fact that might be of the main reasons why Vessels is usually everyone's favourite. Its got the space elements you mention, cinematic instruments (especially outros) and different formula on some songs. Divisions pretty much got rid of spacey vibe as the lore also tuned more into earthlike/dystopian narrative. Horizons too, even Dustin calls it sister album to Divisions. IMO, Transmissions is cinematic, Vessels is heavy orchestral and both Divisions and Horizons are theatrical. I love every single song, yet to find a song I'd skip. But musically being honest, the formula existed back in Transmissions but it became more apparent in recent 2 albums. Icarus isn't the best song to represent, but one of the best for current Starset, I mean thats what most songs in Horizons sound like. Alchemy, Tunnelvision, LTWB, The Breach all have same similar sounds that greatly represent current Starset sound. For Vessels era, I'd say Unbecoming has a great potential to represent Starset. Opinions differ sure but it doesn't hurt to generalise Starset on their own formula, its very apparent.

They are a bit formulaic, but damn, they do it so well.

If Icarus would have screams it would definitely have EVERYTHING of starset inside. Whenever I listen to this song, I get so hyped and heavily disappointed after the 2nd verse (7:33 in this reaction), because I always expect the drop/screams. It is such a bummer and such a missed chance to produce the perfect song. :(

thanks very much for the reaction. also love the more metal vibes (for most of the entire album actually!). And yes, this song leady into another song called "Earthrise" it's a perfect transition, too. Maybe you could check out Earthrise or more newer songs from them.

Nice song. A little heavier but with the voice going thru that voice synthesizer, didn't seemed so heavy.
