LYRICS
Show me your insides
Show me your secrets
Show me what you desire
I can fake it
Show what you wanted
So I can be it
And if I bend just right
I can make it
I didn’t want you
I wanna watch you change
From a butterfly and into chains
Lay your heart into my perfect machine
I will show you what you wanted to see
Just a mirror till I get what I need
The reverie was not of me
You never saw nothing
Never saw nothing
I’m just a liar without deceiving
I’m just a broken clown
Make believing
I should’ve let you know you should’ve ran for cover
I'm just a parlor trick, a two-bit counterfeit
Lay your heart into my perfect machine
I will use it to protect you from me
I will never let you see what’s beneath
So good for you and good for me
We told ourselves we’re
Right where we ought to be
Even you know, even you know
This was all for nothing
Just a sad show, just an ego
I suppose though, as far as I know
We were both pretending
I suppose so, but what do I know?
Even you know, even you know
This was all for nothing
Just a sad show, just an ego
I suppose though, as far as I know
We were both pretending
I suppose so, but what do I know?
Lay your heart into my perfect machine
I will show you what you wanted to see
Just a mirror till I get what I need
The reverie was not of me
You never saw nothing
Never saw nothing
Lay your heart into my perfect machine
I will use it to protect you from me
I will never let you see what’s beneath
So good for you and good for me
We told ourselves we’re
Right where we ought to be

It didn't occur to me until yesterday that this song is literally about the BMI tech in the Starset universe, how the BMI's "promise" to give the individual everything they ever wanted via synthetic pleasures. And another thing is the dynamic symbol of this track evechanging and swaying in the position of a pendulum to finally reaching its zenith in the shape of a heart lining up all three circles. The BMI's shape is visually represented by three circles lined up. This visual representation in this dynamic symbol makes me think the BMI is on the surface: hypnosis/suggestion but really at its core is pure subjugation and manipulation of the "heart" or in this case an individual's mind. Late night epiphanies are wonderful.

I thought of the lotus eater trope as soon as I heard this song for the first time, which is basically what you described. Not too familiar with the lore this band puts out, but it looks like I was almost right on the money. Maybe I should look at the lore more (I know a little for Transmissions, but not so much this album).

In my opinion the "Perfect Machine" isnt an object, its YOU. Or rather, the idea of having to shell your true feelings and emotions from the one you love. Lying to yourself and faking your emotions enough to convince both you and your partner into believing that you're both happy. In my eyes that is what makes you the PERFECT MACHINE. "I don't want you to see who I truly am, so here, pour your heart into this. It's not the real me, but we can PRETEND that it is so that we can both be happy" Sound like anyone?

Beyond the sound of their incredible music, I really love that Starset's songs is because they each feel like they have a real story behind them, one that really makes you think. A sort of hidden message. I think the "perfect machine" the song talks about is some sort of technology that lets people see what they want to see, either a virtual reality device of some kind, mind control, or a mixture of both. It lets people live out their deepest fantasies, hence the line "I'm a liar without deceiving" but when we get to the line "I will choose it to protect you from me, I will never let you see what's beneath". We realize the machine is just keeping the people under its control to keep them from the truth and the harsh realities of the world they live in. Beautiful song. :)

I agree! That's why I love their music. It's not just superficial and catchy, it has real meaning. I think this song is about how we put up walls and hide our true self, and try to be what we think people want. But by trying to change we lose ourselves. It almost sounds like he is the voice of a possessive lover. He will do whatever it takes to win his love, but it's not really him . . . and in the end it hurts them both. It begins to sound like he realizes the damage it causes them, and so do they. "We were both pretending." Then he starts to question it all. "I suppose so, but what do I know?" So the perfect machine isn't perfect afterall and keeps people apart.

I like your interpretation. It fits well with the dystopian society Starset illustrates in their music/videos/etc. They're all brainwashed/controlled/subjugated, blinded to their reality.

Kyle Lincoln You’re more right than you know. The "perfect machine" is called the Brain Machine Interface, or BMI for short. It is a "third generation neural lace", three dots in your left temple that can show you anything and everything you want to see. I’m a bit of an expert on the concept of DIVISIONS. Go see my Genius.com annotations for the album and it’s tracks if you don’t believe me.

Anytime rock music is playing in the background at a restaurant or bar area near me I’ll ask people around me if they’ve heard of Startset. Most haven’t even heard of them unfortunately. They are truly one of a kind. Can’t really compare them to any other band. The drums, lyrics, voice of Dustin, and violin all put together is amazing. And they sound so amazing in concert. This song “Perfect Machine” truly never gets old!

"First we abdicated our minds to pieces of silicon that promised to expand our views of the world, problem is that what came with them was a false idea, a malignant eidolon that became one of the keys to our undoing. Then while our minds were scrambled and our wills were undone thread by thread we abdicated our hearts to synthetic loves and synthetic chemicals. Finally after we had tossed so much of ourselves aside was the truth revealed. We were so dependent upon what was supposed to be the tools of our ascension that we failed to realize that we had become slaves in all but name." -Unknown

what i understand from this song: it is about control in relationships and how people can be so disconnected from reality that they dont realize they see another person as an object. they try and fit other people into their picture perfect perception of how they are, and in trying to control the other person psychologically to fit that picture they remove the potential that person had as a "butterfly" and bring them into social "chains". everyone plays the game, most want control, most dont realize thats where their heart lies. very few escape this struggle of control, the most 'successful' players are the most believable narcissists.

@@mazadancoseben4818 "deeper meanings". Doesn't sound any deeper to me. A sci-fi dystopian world story actually sounds like the easiest way to make a best seller nowadays. Gotta admit though they are pretty good (at least the OG George Orwell's is good).

The best part about this some for me that I don’t see anyone talking about even so long after it’s release is the escalation. The way the lyrics are performed and the way the music itself evolves throughout the song. Turn it up, sit back and listen to it’s growth. It becomes an irresistible chorus that grows in intensity and majesty. Starset is a band of dedicated and obviously invested people. Every song has soul and purpose, it is masterful.
