I LOVE Staship Troopers. I think a lot of people at the time didn't got it because the FX, usually a parody or sarcastic movie had so awful effects that were laughable at best, but SST effects where more than decent for the time, and that confused a lot of people who didn't knew if they were watching a serious movie or not.

Verhoeven is known for five films. Each one is a relatively tongue-in cheek take on a major Hollywood trope. Robocop is about violence. Total Recall is about deception. Basic Instinct is about crime. Showgirls is about sex. Starship Troopers is about war. When you think about all these films, you can see the artist's perspective, but being blockbusters, most people don't see these as as artist's statement, but as plot-oriented narratives for whom _story_ is the primary purpose, like most big movies.

I give Pewds credit when due, he did really good on this, as I too was not expecting the professional tone and relatively well rounded ideas he made regarding the film AND book, something which most folks ignore. I've always taken it as, while the director opposes the book ideologically, the book itself would not have made for a fun movie. It would be like adapting Republic by Plato if the director plays it straight. Because the director love action movies and opposes the book ideology that we have the mindless fun yet satirical movie. If the movie has not been such fun and interesting satire, I would have never read the book to check things out.

One point: In the novel you didn't have to do military service to be a citizen. You had to do some form of civil service. Rico ended up in the military because no other civil service branches wanted him.
@SpicyTake6 жыл бұрын
That's true but it's still an idea with huge problems. If everyone needed a government job to be enfranchised, then everyone would need to work for the government. Since not EVERYONE could work for the government then some portion of the population would always be disenfranchised. And as soon as one political party gained dominance in the government, they would lock out other people from these jobs through cronyism. Then in order to have any power at all people have to join the one party. You have people joining the party just to get a job. You see this over and over in history in authoritarian regimes. You know how they killed the momentum of the civil right movement of the 1960's in the USA? By giving educated blacks good government jobs from the 70's to 90's
@starsiegeplayer6 жыл бұрын
Dallas I see what you are saying. In the book, however you didn't have to be a government employee to be a citizen. You had to do civil service for a certain amount of time (I don't remember how long). People would usually do the jobs, become citizens, and go off to the private sector, making openings for the next set of people. There were not alot of people like Rico who decided to make a career out of it.
@TheMylittletony6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but I think it was 2 years or something in the book. It also says that the government has a hard time to find job positions for all the people that apply. Some are safe and easy things like office work, others are dangerous things like military service or terraforming hostile planets.
@DanBray19916 жыл бұрын
In response to Dalls' post. It's how direct democracies worked for thousands of years. Both the Greek and Romans worked on similar systems, as did early modern European feudal democratic systems. When linked with land ownership requirements effectively means you have to serve the state and also have a vested interest to have the vote. The main reason was that early democracies recognised during a war, landless men and the majority of women would generally survive a foreign invasion or regime change. The main reason being, if you invade a country to take it over, you still need a workforce. However the upper classes and often a portion of the middle and landed classes need to be removed to protect the new regime and stop legitimate claims with potentially strong local support. It's the precise reason your originally had land ownership requirement to serve in Greek or Roman Militaries.

With this kind of topic, you really have to do a script or people will burn you alive in social media. Without out organizing his statement, it could easily be interpreted as fascist, or communist...or the Wall Street Journal or Polygon will try to twist things if the words are not carefully crafted when talking about anything political these days.
