This is one franchise where the first movie is pretty much ALL of the best part. There are sequels, and a CGI TV series. I'd kinda give them a pass, honestly. If you want a totally obscure comedy martial arts movie to react to, check out Kung Pow: Enter The Fist, from about 2001. This movie has me in hysterics, no matter how many times I've seen it. The voice acting is top tier ;)

I saw this in the theater way back. The funny thing about that "sucked his brains out" line, is that by the time it came in the movie, the audience had moved passed the campiness of the movie. Nobody was really laughing at it anymore. I think they had invested in the stakes of the overrun outpost.

That being said they do everything in their power to hammer it into those enlisting just how bad it can get, in the book the main character meets the recruiter again and the recruiter has a pair of cybernetic legs(paid for by the Federation) and the recruiter tells him that he takes them off when recruiting to make people physically see a potential consequence of enlisting.

A rather big difference between this and the book it's based off of is that all of the mobile infantry actually use exo suits. The novel helped to inspire mecha animes as a matter of fact. So without this we probably would have never got Gundam, or Robotech/Macross.

The irony? The society in Starship Troopers is how we in Europe (or at least in my country) believed the US society was back then, in 1997, with all the patriotism, good looking people and military. Turned out the (European) director (who also did Robocop and Total Recall) created this movie as a social commentary _on_ the US, portraying their society and military in an over the top way to make people realize how much similar their society and military looked to this movie and how _wrong_ it is. Didn't really convince the people in the US, but in Europe we appreciated this movie a lot more. He even designed their uniforms to look like German uniforms from WW II, which, together with the military propaganda shots, reflects how he looks at the US military; no qualms, power hungry and bending the truth (the bugs aren't even a spacefaring species, so why would they even bother waging war with humanity at the other side of the galaxy? Yet, they're called the enemy that's trying to invade Earth to justify the war). As for the sequels, they don't really are sequels. They play out in the same universe, but they're hardly worth your time - as sequels usually tend to be.

Maybe you missed the point of the movie, the humans were the bad guys. The big bugs were in their planet doing nothing UNTIL humans colonized their place. Also the asteroid seems been blamed on the bugs without prove.

They evolved (takes millions of years) to be able to translate the broken brain matter of alien species. They evolved to blast giant plasma bursts into space and seemingly out of orbit. The movie shows us they are an interstellar group designed to fight and kill aliens/space threats while colonizing other planets. We see the rock path traced in real time with a Navy captain giving no indication the bugs are not able to do it. She thinks it's such a threat that she wants to immediately warn Earth. More proof than we get as to how a human can implant images in a ferret's brain. More proof than we get as to how humans can travel interstellar distances in days.

Can’t wait to see your reactions!!!🤩 Ok done watching and yes there are 2 additional live action sequels as well as an additional 2 animated sequels plus a computer animated series called Roughnecks. Sadly none are as good as the original as they were lower budgets. The 3rd live action movie was ok. It brought back Casper Van Dean as Rico and finally introduced power armor from the book (sort of). The animated movies and series were more faithful to the book in regards to power armor and I do believe one if not both animated movies also had Casper Van Dean back as the voice of Rico. As for your initial question of what types of movies we’d like to see well speaking for myself less horror more action. Think Arnold Schwarzenegger / Silvester Stallone type stuff. 😋 Including some of their more comedic films! 😁

Johnny Mnemonic is the spelling of the title. I love it, too. Parts of it are a bit silly, but who cares? It adds to the charm, somehow. To me it's a cyberpunk classic but it seems to be mostly forgotten by now. Dina Meyer should have gotten many more roles than she did. I love her in Johnny Mnemonic and Starship Troopers!

There are 5 Starship Troopers movies: - Starship Troopers - Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation - Starship Troopers 3: Marauder - Starship Troopers: Invasion - Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars All 5 are part of the same series. The first 3 are live-action. The last 2 are animated. Opinions on the sequels is......mixed, but not especially favorable. It should be noted that this movie, while based loosely on Robert A. Heinlein's 'Starship Troopers', is also very VERY different. Technological and budget limitations mean the movie omits the iconic drop pods and mech suits used by the Mobile Infantry in the novel. The Mobile Infantry of the novel are essentially the ORIGINAL Space Marines from probably anything ever. Also, the movie's director, Paul Verhoeven, made this movie as a criticism and satire of the military, militarism, nationalism, fascism, propaganda, and even colonialism (The bugs were initially an indigenous population fighting against invading human colonists. And then the colonists started trying to exterminate them.). Heinlein was....uh....let's say "less critical" about that stuff. There is also: - Starship Troopers - a 6-part anime adaptation of Heinlein's original novel. - Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles - a 40 episode CGI animated series. It's based on a combo of both the original novel AND this first movie. In 2011 they talked about supposedly wanting to reboot Starship Troopers. Paul Herhoeven was skeptical and called it out from the start as likely to end up glorifying all the stuff his movie was satirizing. There's been no news of a remake since then.... 🤷‍♂

Hi Jordan & Chandra!😊 This is actually part of an unofficial trilogy. Paul Verhoeven directed three futuristic violent films. This is the third film, and has the most CGI. The first film is "Robocop" (1987). The second film is "Total recall" (1990). You can see his influence, style, and development in all three films. It was actually Earth that started the war. We built a colony on a planet that the bugs had already settled. Chandra recognized The Kurgan from Highlander, nice.😉 Probably horror and silly comedies are my favorite reactions. The sequels are largely forgettable IMO and are rated pretty low. Great reactions to what I think might be your first Verhoeven film, Maplenut Kids!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

Basically in the book you have all rights but the ability to hold public office or vote. In order to get the ability to hold office or vote you must complete federal service which means voluntarily doing unpleasant and potentially dangerous work for a period of time it does not necessarily mean military service. Everyone has the right to attempt to become a citizen it doesn't matter if you are disabled either they must find something for you to do. The idea behind it is that one should be willing to give up their personal comfort and work for the betterment of society before they get a say in how its run. Its a harsh meritocracy. "To permit irresponsible authority is to sow disaster; to hold a man responsible for anything he does not control is to behave with blind idiocy. The unlimited democracies were unstable because their citizens were not responsible for the fashion in which they exerted their sovereign authority . . . other than through the tragic logic of history. The unique 'poll tax' that we must pay was unheard of. No attempt was made to determine whether a voter was socially responsible to the extent of his literally unlimited authority. If he voted the impossible, the disastrous possible happened instead-and responsibility was then forced on him willy-nilly and destroyed both him and his foundationless temple."

This movie did not do so well during its theatrical release but has a great popularity in the 'cult' film market. Michael Ironside was great in this movie. He is great in all his roles. Not sure if you caught it but that was Dean Norris (Hank) from Breaking Bad as commander of the boot camp. KZbin has a making of video. There were animatronic bugs and the ships were models. They used CGI to enhance them. The massive bug charges to the fort was CGI.

Casper Van Dien has one of the most chiseled jawlines in the world, you could cut glass with it. He's 55 right now and still looks amazing, and his daughter Grace was in Stranger Things season 4 Also, in this future, only Citizens are allowed to vote and influence government policy/run for office, as they have served the country and earned that privilege. Non-Citizens are still 'citizens' of the nation, and can still accumulate wealth and such, like Johnny's parents, but they don't get to vote, they just have to accept how things are run, as their money holds no sway over policy or government. It's not a bad system, to be fair, although obviously military service shouldn't be the only 'service' one can do to gain Citizenship.

In the book, military service is not the only option available. In fact, if you are mentally capable of understanding and accepting the oath taken for citizenship, they will find a service that can be performed regardless of physical disability. The main points of service are that the work is in service to the Federation (as the term "service" implies) and that the service will be unpleasant or dangerous. Service is meant to weed out those that seek to only serve their own self-interest.

@@maplenutsreact Not surprising you missed it - Verhoven didn't read the book, because he thought it was boring, and as a result the film is sending mixed messages - Verhoven's attempted satire, and Heinlein's actual ideas. The gist of it is: democracy failed, because people became convinced they could get something just by voting for it, and ended up electing slimy politicians who promised them things. Heinlein's idea is that the cost to acquire something is an integral part of its value - if the right to vote was just given to everybody, it would lose its value. But if you have to earn it, it becomes valuable, because you paid for it with blood, sweat, and tears. As for the service - in the book you don't get to choose (though you can list preferences), and only the best get combatant roles - the rest are given "all sorts of dirty, nasty, dangerous jobs" to make them either quit, or remember that their citizenship is valuable because of the price they paid.

Michael Ironside ("They sucked out his brain") is a Canadian treasure. I love that dude. I also love this movie. The satire and Nazi-like imagery is great. And if you don't care about any of that, there's lots of explosions and gory violence. It's win-win!

So, the thing to remember when watching this is that it's ALL a propaganda movie (a satire of one, actually). That's how things like Carmen being IMPALED through her shoulder can happen and she's laughing in the next scene with her pals. The Bigs didn't bomb Earth with a meteor- how could they? They're on the other side of the galaxy and have no ships or FTL travel- plus they made a point of showing that Earth has that huge defense ring of guns to shoot down meteors. It was a false flags- the government did it to unify society against a common enemy. Did you notice how the news channel had graphics ready as soon as the attack happened? All prepared in advance. They purposely made the "Federation" uniforms very close to Nazi uniforms to show the audience that, yes, you're rooting for the Nazis. The humans are the bad guys. It's also worth noting that the main characters are from Buenos Aires- and that the population is almost all white and English speaking!

another one who doesn't understand what fascism is, and why this movie completely fails as satire. All the things you mentioned are simply continuity errors without deeper meaning. The bugs do attack Earth, except in the book they have spaceships and full FTL technology. Making them mindless insects in the film created a plot hole. And the false flag makes no sense - in the film the society has endured for many generations, there is no civil unrest, no one is organizing protests, and the state is not on the verge of collapse - read "A short, victorious war" (book 2 in the Honor Harrington series by David Weber) - totalitarian countries go to war as a way of perpetuating their power. Here, the Federation has absolutely no need to "unite against a common enemy", and the reason for fabricating an emergency, is to enact some emergency measures - none are introduced - service is still strictly voluntary, you can resign at any time with next to no consequences (you just never get to be a citizen), and there was no shortage of recruits before the meteor strike.

Sorry that this is long but something that isn't made explicit in the movie but is an important aspect - you can be a member of the society and be important (look at Johnny's parents for example) but to vote or hold ANY political office you must be a citizen. To do that you have to do a service for the greater society and the quickest but highest risk way is military service (other paths exist though). The idea is that if you want the chance to influence other people's lives, you HAVE to put your own in someone else's hands. You have to know what it's like to serve as well as command. The teacher is telling the class that democracy failed because citizens could just say 'I want this' and vote for people who said they would provide it, there is no investment so liars, frauds or idiots can reach positions of power. Any idiot can vote for any stupid idea without any personal stake. If you MUST sacrifice blood, sweat, and possibly life for society, you are much more careful that the society is worth sacrificing for.

One correction, though (but don't kick yourself over it, that's how most people remember it). In the book, you can't choose your service. You swear an oath (which includes a line about upholding, and defending the constitutional liberties of all citizens, and other lawful residents of the Federation), and then you are given 48h leave, and if you change your mind, and don't come back, that's that. Otherwise, you'll be assigned a service based on your aptitude/preferences, and it may end up with you being a menial worker - that's why it says "no less than 2 years, or as much longer, as may be required" - because if you end up as a truck driver terraforming Venus, or something, you'll be at it longer than 2 years. You can also get kicked out for things like disobeying orders, or failing your physical (but you don't have to accept the medical discharge - there's a guy in the book who didn't and ended up as a cook, but still proud of being in the army). In most cases, if it's without prejudice, you're allowed to finish the tour in non-combatant jobs. Only things that end with a Bad Conduct Discharge, and potentially court martial are bad for you. And spot on about the faliure of democracy. Heinlein says people became convinced they could get something just by voting for it.

I don't have a movie suggestion but I do have a show suggestion if you decide to do that again. It's 4 season's long. The first 3 season's are 10 episodes. The 4th and final season is 8 episode's. The show is called "Banshee". It's a unsung gem of a show. It never got the attention it deserved.

A movie, where the premise is "the historical failure of democracy", and shown is a propaganda-saturated militaristic society populated by actors selected largely based on handsome "Arian-style" looks dressed in imposing uniforms. There is absolutely nothing subtle about it. And still so many people fail to see that it is a deliberate satire of fascism, but are rather enamoured by what they see.

Just because something holds similar attributes to fascism does not make it inherently fascist. Fascism has 5 key principles, as writen about by Benito Mussolini in “The Doctrine of Fascism” (1932) a.k.a the guy who wrote the book on it. 1) The creation of a ‘new man for a new century’, Starship troops has no mentions of eugenics, selective breeding or any attempt to ‘improve’ humanity. It infact scorns the society the came before it for attempting such things. 2) ‘Single party rule’ the starship troops universe makes no mention of how its voting system works other than people earn the right to vote for choosing the serve the civilisation. 3) the ‘ever increasing power of the state’ be that industrial, militaristic, social or political power; the starship troopers book makes it clear that the war is over territorial expansion, as both the humans and bugs want the same planets. In this point Starship troopers holds similarity to Fascist ideology, along with 99% of all other ideologies or nations that have ever gone to war. 4) ‘Uniformity’ the believe that all must march under one rhythm surpassing class distinctions and difference of identity within the states borders. All are consumed by the state. Diversity is anathema. Both the book of Starship troopers, and the film show this is not the case, otherwise the Mormon extremists and any other humans wanting to exist outside of the federation would have been suppressed and the military would be based of conscription rather than optional volunteer service. 5) ‘Everything in the state and nothing outside the state. The state is god.’ The fact that people in the Statship troopers’ universe can colonise planets outside the Federation means this is not the case. Couple that with the fact that Juan Rico’s wealthy father disowns his son for doing Federal Service, means that business and wealth also exist outside state control, ultimately weakening the state.

I do not recommend any of the direct to video sequels, but if you really must watch, then go for the third one: Starship Troopers Marauder where Casper Van Dien returns as Johnny Rico. Mind you they sequels are made with a much lower budget so don't expect movie quality effects like the first one. They're more Asylum quality.

Clancy Brown is awesome. Just like Mark Hamill is the definitive voice of Joker, IMO Clancy is the definitive Lex Luthor. For more Clancy, check out The Shawshank Redemption. It's seriously one of the best movies ever. Also, for more Paul Verhoeven, check out the original Robocop and Total Recall. You won't be disappointed.

The director of this intended "Starship Troopers" to be an anti-war satire, not an adventure movie. What kind of reactions do I enjoy? I like you guys, but I'd have to say things that are NOT dumb 80s teen comedies or post 1980 horror flicks. And honestly, maybe not even good movies that I've already watched a couple of hundred other reactors do already. Depends on my mood. That still leaves a long, long list of great stuff to watch. For instance, how about the excellent 1980 "Shogun" mini-series instead of the new one that everybody else is doing right now. Or do both and compare. Or the spooky 1979 Stephen King "Salem's Lot" mini-series. Or the impressive but neglected Charlton Heston epic "El Cid" (1961). Or speaking of famous epics, "Lawrence of Arabia" hasn't been done to death yet and I haven't seen anyone touch "Doctor Zhivago". Do "Rob Roy" (1995, Liam Neeson) instead of "Braveheart". There's no shortage of material.

This movie was criticized at first for being pro-fascist, but only now do people realize that the movie is actually anti-fascist. The sequels lose all commentary and just go for the action; there's no sarcasm or satirical tone. All of the "Do you want to know more?" and the jabs at military propoganda are gone in the sequels; they treat humans as the saviors, and the bugs are evil aliens, and there's no room for any other thoughts. So I say they're not worth watching.

The usage of the term "Administrative punishment" for a whipping makes sense. In the US military, there are two kinds of formal punishments, "Non-Judicial" and "Courts Martial" A non-judicial punishment might reduce your rank or result in confinement, but doesn't count as a criminal offense. Anyone subject to non-judicial punishment has the option of requesting a court martial instead. A court martial conviction almost always results in conviction and discharge ,and the criminal gets a felony conviction added to their civilian criminal record.
