@RedShirtGuy9610 ай бұрын
it also sounds like a logistical nightmare to design. If its an actual adhesive like the kind in a rat glue trap, it would have to be designed with a throwable surface or as a stick grenade, and there is always a chance it could hit on the non sticky parts, plus what if you mess up throwing it and stick it to yourself. The only viable sticky grenades I can think of are some kind of sci-fi magnetic and designed to target vehicles and metal armor, or some kind of gravity technology
@EskChan1910 ай бұрын
@@RedShirtGuy96 Actually, back in 2016 some scientists in a university in singapore invented a glue that hardens when a low voltage current is run through it and becomes sticky again when it stops. It's not ready to be used commercially yet but it is a thing that exists. I could see a grenade using that. The current can be very low, low enough not to be dangerous to humans. So either the grenade could have a small battery that keeps it hardened until it detecs that it has been thrown (which would be very easy to do using some accelerometer or gyroscope), or the soldiers suits could give off a low voltage field keeping the grenade hardened while close to the soldier and making it sticky once it leaves the soldiers hand. Both of these are realistic ways to design a sticky grenade.

I like how they just said fuck it lets discuss the complexity of interstellar communications and screw the movie 😂 great reaction guys and very informative lol
@Oshroth5 ай бұрын
The biggest issue with interstellar communications is speed of light (radio waves travel at speed of light). Unless we develop a way to transmit signals faster than the speed of light, space travellers are basically going to be cut off from each other. e.g. Pluto is between 4 and 7 light hours away from Earth(depending on Earth-Pluto orbit positions) The closest star to our sun (Alpha Centauri) is 4.35 light years away Though if we developed FTL travel before FTL communication, then you would have companies that deliver messages and data between locations (maybe even a return of the pony express) Second biggest issue is getting the signal to the destination intact. You wouldn't be able to just beam your signal outward because it would lose signal strength quickly. You also couldn't just point an antenna at your destination due to orbital movement and speed of light. You'd either need a large number of relays (as mentioned in the video) or fancy predictive targeting systems.

Yeah, the point of the movie is that war can make anyone a fascist. You start out with these excited and bright kids with their whole life ahead of them, and by the end they are all hardened killers ready to exterminate another species. As for the book, I read it as an examination of military leadership. The point of the book is watching Rico climb the ladder. You see the leaders (good and bad) that he has above him, and then what from those leaders he works into his own leadership style. That is why it is on the US Army's suggested reading list for leaders.

25:20 So... there is a limit since data gets lost due to interference. Even stuff like Voyager I/II data gets lost in travel, and that one is relatively close to earth at like 0.002 light years. Even so, the biggest issue is time delay, since the data can only travel at the speed of light at most, so again on the Voyager example it takes like a day to get to earth, so a 2-way comunication would take 2 days. That's why most Sci-Fi series use "subspace" as a method of communication, since they can just handwave the explanation and go with real time comms instead.

Speaking as a guy that likes the book and the Movie I think its an interesting Dichotomy between them. In the book one of the reasons the most scarred war vets are the ones recruiting is to give them all a clear idea of the kind of shit they could be in for and there's never shame given for deciding to leave. The idea of Government or Military service is to ensure you have a tangible idea of what impact your vote will have. The War is depicted as basically a sort of inevitability that resulted from two powerful factions wanting the same real-estate, With the Bugs basically serving as an idea of a species where Communism actually works because unlike humans, the bugs were evolved for it. The Movie's rebuttal to the core "Service For Citizenship" idea is that if you make it through service, the selection pressure will have effectively brainwashed you to vote in the exact ways the current powers would want anyway. The movie has no subtlety that the whole federation regime is basically a cult that worships violence, but notably still displays the cast as a mixed bag at worst, even being part of a really fucked up system, many of them are just trying to do right by eachother. The Bugs are obviously not made sympathetic, being depicted as basically a cluster of walking blades with a bad attitude and no self preservation, the horror of the war comes in how it makes the Human Military act more like the bugs, using swarms of expendable cannon fodder at the command of a Psionic elite leadership.

21:23 Theoretically they could develop a Quantum Entanglement Communication System, to communicate across space instantly. We might not be far from this, I wouldn't be surprised to see it done in the next 20 to 50 years. Otherwise communication would be limited to the speed of light. So if you sent a message to someone one-lightyear away, a message would take an entire year to get to them, and if they replied it would be another year before you got a response. 25:36 With Voyager, it was supposed to be out of the range we could detect the signal, but in the decades since, we have built significantly better radio telescopes that can now still here it. Currently it takes Voyagers signals almost 23 hours to get to Earth. So if NASA were to send it a command to do something, it would take almost 2 days before NASA knew if Voyager did what they asked.

25:10 Radio Waves in theory could have infinite range however they will begin to degrade over time because of the background radiation of the universe, you could get past them by increasing the power of the transmission but to get infinite range you would essentially need infinite power. They also travel at the speed of light so that limits communication, for example it takes roughly 8 mins for light from the Sun to reach Earth. To send a message to the nearest star would take around 4.5 years. To state the obvious space is big and based on our current knowledge there is no way to communicate quickly over interstellar distances.

I'm sure someone has already said it, but im letting you know my thoughts cause you asked for it. The main hurdle we are going to run into when it comes to communication in space is that the communication can't travel faster than the speed of light, and since space deals with such vast distances it will be nearly impossible (with our current understanding of technology and astrophysics) to have instant communication. To put it in perspective, mars is something like 25 light minutes from earth, say a colony on Mars had some kind of emergency, well it would take 25 minutes for us in earth to even get the distress signal, let alone send a response or team. Now imagine that on the light year scale. You out past Space AAA comms? Looks like it'll be years before we even have info that you are broken down, and you're most likely dead at that point lol

I'll be honest, i'm a bit on Ruff's side. Just because you can put sattelites everywhere doesn't mean every connection will be the same. Just like Wi-Fi connections get weaker once you reach a certain distance, i imagine a satellite would still need to be near SOMETHING in order to have connection. I know we have technology that's already covering THE Universe, not just the solar system, but i think we would need way more in order to turn THAT into basically Space Cell Phones, let alone to make it a common product.

A spaceship would be pressurized. Space is next to 0 pressure. So if the hull of a ship is breached in space, the high pressure inside would rush to the low pressure outside thereby _pushing_ things through the breach.
@rowaystarco10 ай бұрын
the pressure inside isn't that high though. Explosive decompression in scifi is way over the top. The huge rips in the ships in this movie would of course be big trouble, but a smaller hull breach wouldn't cause that much of an issue. You wouldn't need a very strong object to patch a smaller hole in a ship. I would certainly rather have a hull breach in space than in a deep sea submarine...
@GreenDude_Gaming7 ай бұрын
Is the air holding the spaceship together? It's not, the structure of a spaceship can maintain itself without air.

They talking about playing helldivers (good game), when they could be playing Starship Troopers: Extermination (Closer to the movie)
@Torente3228 күн бұрын
Actually a huge issue with the film is how sections of the movie happen later in the timeline are shown first. So the missle defense on the moon and such was developed after the destruction of Buenos Aires. The mormons were slaughtered after the attack.

On the topic of negative pressure in space, if you go 10m deep in water that is 2 atmospheres of pressure aka +1 atmosphere, so the same pressure squeezing into you is the same as your insides trying to push out of you in space aka -1 atmosphere. 10m isn't that much. Explosive decompression is another matter, the opposite, explosive compression, is just a regular explosion and again, has much the same effect on a body.

52:56 Negative. Despite Verhoven's attempts to make it such, this movie still fails to come off completely fascist. There are so many telltale signs that are clear differences from Helldivers. Facism would not suffer civillians, ST does. Facism would not have debates between thinkers, ST does. Fascism would not design it's military to convince you to quit, ST does. For more insights, seek out "The Politics of Starship Troopers."

@Hitora_San9 ай бұрын
Haha, of you would drop satellites in space, they simply would not stay in one place, they would move towards the strongest gravitational pull. Probably drift after the ship what dropped them or just get destroyed constantly by asteroids and other moving particles. They do that on earth, because they are in a special zone inside the atmosphere in which they move with the earth and not fall down due to gravity, neither shoot out into space due to the centrifugal force. In any other space movie they are not using "WiFi" but the ships own communications tower to get in contact with other close by ships. The instant communication is fake in every movie and story. Just take into account, that depending on the current orbit it takes 5-20 minutes for a single message to come through from the mars rovers.
