Starship Valiant: Crosses to Bear (2016)

Stardate 1017.4, the Federation Starship USS Valiant rescues 135 colonists from a Federation outpost only to discover that they have all been stricken with an alien disease and to make matters worse, the medical staff on the Valiant have no antidote to the sickness. Working overtime, Chief Medical Officer Roger Floyd grows attached to the last two remaining children from the colony as he feverishly searches for a cure. Emotionally distraught, he wonders if he fails, will he have the strength to carry on? Taking place several years before the events of Legacy, Crosses to Bear tells the tale of a pivitol event in the life of Roger Floyd.
"Crosses to Bear," is the second short-story from the Starship Valiant Universe and features an exceptional cast of actors and actresses, all from Oklahoma with the exception of one. The film was written, produced and directed by Michael L. King, who also wrote and produced the first story. Crosses is a heartfelt attempt at presenting the pains of terminal sickness in children, while showing that those afflicted have dreams and aspirations of being more than what they are. Yes the illnesses take center stage but the persons afflicted do not have too.
Put together by a host of trek fans including Superfan Glen Wolfe, who supplied all the films medical props, Scott Johnson's lighting expertise, Dan Reynold's expert photography and editing, Craig Frey's subtle but excellent visual effects, Crosses to Bear is a labor of love for everyone involved. A "small" fan film with a big heartfelt story.

Wow, all I can say is wow. This episode shows the side of life that those of us that have served on a ship can all empathize with. Coping with loss is never easy. Even with all of the miracles of modern medicine, there are just some patients a Doctor can't save. This episode truly brings out the human side of Science Fiction and shows a side of Star Trek rarely ever shown in the big budget studio shows. Thank you for this. It goes to show that Valiant productions, just like other fan based shows are in it for a great story, not a great amount of money.

A very touching, human story; perfect Star Trek! However, it doesn't stop there. The CGI visuals are beautiful throughout and often very well thought out to: For example, just after the deaths, the ship appears darkened (as if in mourning) yet this is not just due to "magic space lighting", but because the vessel is in nightside orbit of a planet. Real care and attention, even there. The LONG opening shot utilises sickbay in a way we haven't seen before. In fact, the camera work is creative and spectacular throughout. The actors are all spot on - I totally bought into their pain and story. Even the child actors - where did you find children that could act so well? And finally - Frank Jenks (although the southern accent is sadly absent) bears a definite resemblance to a young Deforest Kelly - good choice! All in all an absolute sterling production, and I look forward to more.

This was very impressive and also hit me really hard. I lost my little sister in 2017 due to illness and that scene with the older child promising to take of the younger reminded me of the same promise I made to her, and the same thoughts I had after she passed.

Anyways I also read that Paramount and Paramount+ Had a Licensing issue with some of the various trek movies and shows if this level of incompetence keeps up then Paramount+ and Paramount themselves may have no choice and mabey even CBS too may have no choice but to turn to fan film based talant like this

An excellent short film. I work as a paramedic, and this took me back to the first child I saw die, a 3 year old. I could feel the pain of the doctor. It was especially wonderful to see a young Bones, before he became the Enterprise medical doctor. Very well written, Keep up the good work.

That was one of the saddest things I've seen in Star Trek. But it illustrates that we are *NOT* Gods. There are just some things we can't do. And I've never thought doctors accept death more easily. They learn to control their reaction to it, but they feel just as deeply as anyone else. Otherwise they wouldn't fight it so hard, I'm sure there are some who accept death more easily, but those doctors have lost their way and their purpose. This was good work. Touching. My favorite things about good science fiction is that it can take us into a world that might be. It takes us into a future that we might at least partially create. But it is not about other worlds or other times. Good science fiction has the ability to sweep away frivolous things and is a human story about the time in which it is written.

This one touched me hard. No Ihave not lost my children but I'm a medic and I have lost a few. Every time you see your own child. The hardest has always been the children. The 12 year old I worked on for over an hour and we lost, the three year old whose father was a truck driver who was told about his son's death while on the road. the five year old trapped beanethe his father's body after an accident. I held his son for him so he could say good by before I took the father to the big city 90 minutes away. If you are wondering, yes what the doctor is talking about is true, those deaths stick with us. We are sore loseres

In actuality, this production cost us around 500.00 and director Michael L. King paid all out of pocket for it. The sets were build at Starbase Studios in Oklahoma where many of us volunteered our time and money to help out with costs.
