Vividly remember this game. I was at the dentist then, my first ever dentist appointment. They were showing this on the TV in the waiting area. I came out and SA were racing at around the 8th over mark. I hurried my Mom back home, hoping that they'd win because what a story it would be! And also, because back then we all hated the Aussies because they were THAT GOOD! Got home. Didn't miss a ball. Was jumping and cheering at the end of it. I was all of 9 then. Distinctly remember the SA cricketers jumping off the balcony and an old couple in the Audience crying and kissing each other. I understood what sport can do. A classic game. Beautiful memories.

Undoubtedly the greatest ODI ever! 400 at that time was unimaginable and chasing it was simply unthinkable! Still remember, my father was watching news at that time and there was scorecard showing, South Africa on 399 and I thought that it is some error but I hurriedly switched on to the match and was fortunate enough to see South Africa win! Childhood memories refreshed after seeing this video!

Sorry I must disagree … the best ODI team is Australia ( and I’m from South Africa) . It’s simple Australia have won more World Cups than anyone else .. no argument finished. In the same way the best Rugby Union Team is the Springboks and the Best Soccer Team is Brazil. When you have a World Cup in a sport THAT what you have to win … nothing else. And NOTHING else counts! To use an analogy … when studying a professional degree, either you pass or fail the final exams … what you did in the previous 4 years is nice … but what counts is the FINAL exam… If you can’t handle the pressure there sorry but that the “ Big one” . In cricket South Africa are the biggest chokers, in Rugby Union it’s France and in Soccer it’s the Netherlands… all have great players no disrespect… amazing talent … hard working … and play amazing games … but for whatever reason they just can’t put that final performance in when it counts! As a current international sportsman I can tell you, you actually feel bad for your competitors ( if you are a decent human being) when you see such brilliant teams failing at the final hurdle … my heart goes out to them especially teams such as the Netherlands in soccer who have had such brilliant teams such brilliant players and fall at the last hurdle. Although I am also of Italian descent and would like Italy to win a 5th World Cup …. I would always support the Netherlands in a World Cup final if playing someone else … simply because they deserve it. At least one thing about South Africans is we actually don’t even get disappointed when the Proteas choke anymore … it’s normal now !

No the All Blacks still better than South Africa head to head and it's not that close. 62W-42L Incidentally, they were behind in the 90s so this modern era has been dominated b the Blacks. This has only really changed the last 5 years and South Africa are doing what Henry Hansen and Smith did with their large squads able to field two completely different teams week-to-week for "Rest and rotation" purposes. We haven't gone back to that again even though it's arguable we don't have the talent and it's likely because the coaches since have hung on far too long to some players.

Certainly the greatest international one day cricket match ever. It was a massive pity that there had to be a losing team in a match so majestic. I'm South African, but considering the Aussies incredible innings posting a world record score at the time, perhaps a draw would have been the perfect result. Of course I was over the moon at the time, but in time my heart went out to the men from OZ. It must have been heartbreaking for them. Pure magic this match was...... I watched the first innings of Australia and I was like laughing to myself and switched off the tv thinking this match is over in the first innings itself. Don't know what came over me after about 90 mins or so i just said to myself let's see what's happening and i turned on the television 📺 saying to myself South Africa would have lost 5 6 wickets for 100 odd runs but to my disbelief I was shocked to see the score it was 21 overs and almost a score of 200 and from that point I was glued to the tv set and as south africa scored the last run I was so ecstatic with the win I forgot it was not India who was playing the match ........ This is the day personally I could clearly say cricket won as a sport and we humans won as a species it was pure magic ✨

Then saw the match highlights in tensports after some months and my jaw dropped I was amazed by the unbelievable chase that SA pulled off against the mighty Aussie who were impossible to beat especially chasing target against them even 250/260 were chased hardly the other teams had tough time even chasing that forget about 400+.
