James, I love Keith's style so much I keep my Telecaster in the key of Keith...open G...Always! I am old 66 now and saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in the early 60s and Stones etc. I got my first guitar shortly after. However 🤔...there was no James James and KZbin back then.😪 James, if there was KZbin then...Maybe🤔...just maybe...I would have been on the Ed Sullivan show too! Lol! Since discovering you on KZbin my guitar playing has improved unbelievably!! It never did before. If it means anything to you(I think it does) James... Thanks for all your help with my playing!...Really!!😉👍🏻 Ray Boston Massachusetts

I've followed you for some time and always am amazed at the simple elegance of your presentations. Love this one. Got into alternate tunings late in life after reading Life and Richard's description of leaving the low E string off. Immediately took it off my pawn shop buy ($75) Epiphone SG copy and its become my "Stones guitar". Now this old man has another one to play to the universe thanks in large part to you.

+James James Sorry to disappoint you but , yes, only a handful. I realize they are one of the greatest bands around and I have nothing against true fans. I just think a lot of their music is boring or not interesting to me. At least I know a bit about their back round and the names of the band member, which is a lot more than I can say for many other bands I am not totally true to.

6:08 and on: Yeah dude! You said EXACTLY what I've felt since I was 11 years old, when I was first getting into the Stones. I love so many albums and live releases (official and bootleg)...but not everything. The nuances of Start Me Up (album version) are never found on any live performance. I dream of them getting back o that on this particular song, but I doubt that will ever happen. But hey, I do appreciate 50+ years of their stuff. Anyway, great breakdown!

once again, you nailed the nuance of the rhythms. simple chord structure, but there's a lot of push and pull to the strumming. you showed nice variations while keeping it simple enough to learn. does Keith still play that natural Tele with the 6th string missing? when you don't wrap thumb, are you muting 6th string with your 1st finger tip? otherwise, I don't know how you strum the chords' root/bass note on the 5th string without hitting the 6th. I really like your channel, hope you keep it going.

+Jonathan Dean - thanks. I went to the keith shrine and I was thinking of "malcolm", but he keeps 4 tele's with 5 strings. ernie ball actually makes him a custom 5 string set- not for sale to the public. if he had just subscribed to JJ's channel, he could have learned how to mute the 6th string. lol

Very nice! "Tattoo You". The last great Stones album in my opinion.
@jamesjames92759 жыл бұрын
+rubicon1983 Agreed. Even though it was a bits-and-pieces album of leftovers, it still holds together better than anything else since Some Girls. Some of the production sounds a little dated, but it's a solid album.
@rubicon-oh9km9 жыл бұрын
+James James Did you care for "Steel Wheels"? I tried to love it but just couldn't.
@jamesjames92759 жыл бұрын
+rubicon1983 I think about half of it is OK. It was better than Dirty Work. But the most important thing about Steel Wheels is that it brought the band back together. Musically, it ain't much. At least, not in my opinion.
@rubicon-oh9km9 жыл бұрын
+James James The biggest thing I equate "Steel Wheels" with was being 20 years old and going to college in Tampa, FL in '89 and letting my then girlfriend talk me out of going to the show that I had won tickets to because "she hated the Stones". Yes, I'm an idiot.
@RobertLane789 жыл бұрын
Great lesson and thanks for all you do! I was thinking "Get together" and immediately went to "Ohio" on PT. I just want America to meet in the middle. Both tunes were in my head today. @jamesjames92754 жыл бұрын
I don't know what guitar Keith used on this recording, but it sounds like a humbucker to me. With the Tele Custom, he tended to use the middle position, with the bridge single and neck HB together.

+James James which of your Tele's do you prefer? the FMT with humbuckers or the Pink Tele with single pickups. I was just listening to your lesson on Micks Dont tear me up. Im thinkin about getting a Tele and not sure which model to get.
@jamesjames92759 жыл бұрын
+Chris C Apart from being the same general shape, the two guitars aren't really anything alike. On the FMT you can't really get traditional Tele tones. That's probably the more versatile of the two, actually. It's got a coil tape in the bridge pickup. But if I had to choose, I'd go with the pink one.
@CCB69399 жыл бұрын
Thanks James, I definitely want that classic tone. Going with the single pickups .

I think it's in F actually. The first chords is C but i think it's the 3rd blues chord. I think this blues chords progression is F (first , the tonic chord), Bb (second, where it boogies) and C (the last blues chord that he uses as first but just as fast transition and then in the chorus). I was thinking about that, it is a quite easy song but out of the standard rules... If it was in C, it should start in G (fast transition), C (the tonic) and F (last blues chord). Dunno if it is clear enough. Ciao.

It's a nice riff yeah, but when I was in a Stones band (I was Keef) me and the singer hated playing the song. It was a real struggle to make it interesting. The Crowd loved it though, and you would always get bald 60 yo men strutting like Jagger. The tone needs to be clean and not too much bass. You got it pretty good here.
@betasavoir3 жыл бұрын
Yes (4 years later lol), I can't agree more! It's a very hard song to make it sounds correctly. And very hard to reproduce what Keith does in live/studio. There's a kind of groove which I can't describe and I think that only Keith knows the secret x)
@republikautopijaofficial71345 жыл бұрын
It's nice , but you got one needless chord ( B flat on chorus part , just before you back on main C riff ) !
@EddieLeeFunn8 жыл бұрын
KEEF!
@flotenn33513 жыл бұрын
Hm is it just me or do you get that chorus wrong? IMHO it's only C(5th fret) and F(10th) pretty straight and that 8th to 7th thing you do everytime comes only in the last part (mean mean machine) and there it is 8th 7th 0th rather than your 3rd, which sounds not right at all. Don't want to be mean, but one can hear that you're not in tune with the backing track in the aforementioned parts. Your lesson for Before they make me run is pretty good, so i was a little disappointed when i listened to this one.
@scorp41657 жыл бұрын
sorry to be so pathetic for not working it out but whats the run after the third fret section. You move too quick for me to follow(not a criticism) thanks again as always
@jamesjames92757 жыл бұрын
What's the time code in the video for that part?
@albb57 жыл бұрын
scorp4165 it's just going frets 3-2-0 in the fifth string before coming back to the beginning of the riff. (By saying fret 0 I mean playing the fifth string without pressing any fret), playing frets 3-2 and falling back to the beginning of the riff works too. For me it's simply about the groove you want to give to your playing, not so much about being exact in terms of playing what Keith plays in the studio version. This is one of those songs that admits you to add your own personal thing by creating little licks or phrases that fit the rythm and the tuning . Btw, great lesson James, thank you for your nice work.
