Congratulations Jesse....it’s never to late to start flying. My girlfriend dream was flying gliders. She started at 59 and found getting a powered private license is a cheaper, faster way to get a glider rating. She liked glider aerobatics and started competing. Now 6 years later she will represent the United States in the worlds glider aerobatics competition in Romania 🇷🇴 this summer.....follow your dream...you never know where it may take you.

I got my VFR at seventeen then IFR at eighteen. I loved flying for over thirty years but now I am retired from law enforcement I enjoy traveling in my motorcoach. Flying is great but for so many years I would fly over America wondering how and what was happening between takeoff and landing. Now I enjoy the what i call, in between America. Enjoy your flying as much as possible, it's a blessing from God.

This has been the best video on flight and becoming a pilot I have ever seen. If anyone is on the fence to taking the leap to become a pilot this will be the clincher. Believe it or not I have watched every video you have produced and love ( most ) of them. This was special, all your videos are informative, how to and how not to do things. Your ups and your downs baring every piece of your journey. I admire you two and the way you are proceeding on your own journey in life. I just hope you read this, so you will know other people really appreciate what you do. Thanks folks. BTW I had a choice of pilot or sea captain many years ago, I live on the coast so I chose the water but I always wonder how it would have been

Thanks for sharing your journey. I remember my solo from almost 20 years ago like it was yesterday. My instructor and wife were sitting on the picnic table watching my 3 takeoffs and landings. His wife told me afterwards it was so much fun seeing his reactions. He had been instructing 40 years. Apparently he looked at her proudly and said, “I did that!” Enjoy your flying Jesse and never lose the passion.

Easily your best video, Jesse. Explained a lot about what hadn't been said before about allocating free time in pursuit of your private pilot's license. 180+ day & night landings, plus the hundreds of hours of book learning and ground training. Also was a great example for those who may want to follow in your footsteps. Impressive that you showed the anxieties that erupt spontaneously as conditions change and it underlined the reality that this is no joke, a pilot really does have to keep his head at all times. Kudos to the instructors. You've had some great ones.

Jessie, with this .... WoW !!! You brought back a ton of memories for this 69 year old!! Your thoughts feelings emotional challenges ... The night flights wow ... Oh dear me on my dual night my instructor and I just about became a piece of nose art on a C5 Galaxy ... Long story ... bought a new sectional for the dual night x-country ... That very day a tower frequency changed .... So we both had our heads in chart and Jepsen looking for the tower frequency.... I saw movement out the corner of my eye and imediatly saw the problem and grabbed yoke and freeked my flight instructor completely out. . I grabbed the yoke and did a hard over left bank full 90° and buried the yoke in my lap pulling hard over.... My instructor lost his flash light the Jepsen and the chart all floating about his face... He reached over and cleared my hands and arms from the controls and tried to right the airplane... I cleared him and and got back into our yank and crank manuver as I eaked out "airplane big - head on" ... Just as he saw the wing tip go by about 50 yards away.... Scared the crap out of us both!! The C5 was decending for landing and we were passing through a corridor for another VOR to a different airport... We just had our nav light on ... Bad move... Learned a valuable lesson that night.. the gotta pee about killed me! 😳😌 More memories of time in the air... The flying with a young flight instructor the next day after his night out .... Flying high the next day two bad side effects... Noxious gasses and Appoxia not favorite flying companions at all. .. any who . . . Thanks for the rememberances ... Fly safe and may all you landings be solidly smooth!!! Ed in Phoenix writes.

Getting your PPL is a waste of money unless you have a lot to waste. Everyone should get a ride in a small plane at least once, its great! That being said unless your going to make money flying don't do it. Im 60 been around planes all my life. Got my PPL before I turned 18 then I spent the next 12 years picking up pieces of planes and air crew while I was in the Air Force. I know flying is safer than driving. Jesse, there are some great small airstrips here in north Idaho that are a blast to fly into, just need to do a low flyby to get the elk to move first.

Jesse, think multiple instructors is good and bad. Probably better to use one through solo. I was lucky stayed with one instructor, solo was after 12 hours of instructor time. First cross country attempt was ruined at first landing. Went perfect but strong NW winds for a 27 landing. Felt like a 45 degree crab. Had to land over a snowdrift, exit from runway impeded by plane stuck in snow. Took a coffee break, got a signature checked the plane and took off. Weather had gotten much worse. Ceiling dropped, visibility worse, wall of WX from my NW destination. Made a call, based on my broad experience to cancel that plan. Headed for home airport where it was sunny, and light winds. Lesson for me was there are bold pilots, and there are old pilots but there are no old bold pilots. I learned to fly in 1976. Things were different. Weather info. Look outside. Much safer. GPS. What's that. Much better now. My girlfriend learned enough to solo. We've been married 41 years now. Haven't flown in years. Miss it.

Over 3k hours flying the interior, over 3k in Washington Oregon area. You made me snort my morning brew when you said "Keeping wings mostly level". I kicked myself over that for over 80% of my flights. This video brought back so many memories, insecurities, and nightmares of my getting my ticket ;). Chris Hadfield said it best in his book, fly with the mantra "What can kill me in the next 10 minutes". But I got into the habit of scan out, scan in, think about the next 10 min, then marvel at the view and that view and feeling of freedom. I turned in my Ticket in 91, I didn't feel safe. (vision change with BP) Welcome to a hobby (Job?) that will keep you learning and mentally alive. (Yes I miss it most days) Please keep up the great videos!

Great vid and excellent editing. You're absolutely right - you would have regretted it for the rest of your life. I do. I had to stop as my father was dying, then lost my job so couldn't afford the lessons - one thing after another. Looking back there were things I could have done but didn't so to anyone reading this, please take a step back and see if there is anything you can do to make sure you absolutely cannot do this..... Good luck.

Jesse and Alyssa, watching this full length video here brought back a lot of old and happy memories of when I was a kid, and by kid I mean 17-19 years old. During My junior year in high school I had the unique opportunity to work at our small local airport. Seeing how I was in school and under 18 when I started there I could work 3 hours a day Monday through Friday or 6 hours on a Saturday or Sunday, in total 15 hours a week maximum. My responsibilities included retrieving the rental aircraft from the hangar(s) or tie down areas, maintaining the fuel levels so they were always ready to fly, fueling other aircraft that had visited needing fuel, arranging ground transportation to many local eateries near by, we had a station wagon for the visitors to borrow. Radio traffic to update the pilots flying in or out of the airport on the wind direction, speed, ground temperature and other traffic happening around the area. When I turned 18 I could and did work at least 40 a week normally, relieving the manager to do other important tasks around the airport. During the winter months I was assigned runway clearing duties, imagine an 18 year old plowing a 3000 ft runway, (years later expanded to 4300 x 75’) and taxi ways by himself, yeah I did that with an old military 6X6 deuce and a half... Some of my fondest memories came when I was able to witness a new pilot achieve their PPL, and lose the tail of their shirt they were wearing just like you did, and hang it proudly in the FBO...or go for an impromptu ride with the “big boss” airport owner in his private helicopter or the manager would ask if it was busy, if not jump in we are going for a ride (flight). I forget how many numerous times I was invited after my shift to go for a flight with so many of the pilots we had based around us at the airport, from a vintage Stearman to an almost new Piper Cub or the rentals used by seasoned instructors just wanting some company. We lost the one of best they had just last year, he was 80 and still flying...Being there for the annual fly-in, watching a B-25 and a B-17 land and taxi right up to the building and be invited in for a private tour!! Those were the days. I must say using the radio back then made it so much easier for me during my 32 years in the Fire & EMS service, if you can talk to a complete stranger via radio you sure can talk to someone you know personally. Thank you for sharing this life journey with all of us here through KZbin, Instagram, and other sites, it’s been fun and educational watching so far...looking forward to many more videos and chats. P.S. if you get the chance or time look up FBO KRNP and you will see my home town......it’s been 37 years since I worked there.

Jessie congrulations - you deserve it. Just one technical question. - When I leant to flyover 40 years ago, my base was at a mixed military and civilain airfield in Townsville Australia. Most of my flying was to visit folks who owned the massive cattle properties in the remote outback between the coast and Northern territiory border. As most of the airstrips I landed on where rough, bouncy, dirt any very short - all my instrutors hammered into me the need to land with accuracy on the piano keys, after a steep descent and large round-out, so we could always pin point exactly where we were landing and manage our speeds and descent angles accordingly. Even landing back at Townsville with its 8,000 ft runway we where always told to treat it like a short dirt strip, steep descent and land on the piano keys unless instructed otherwise. I noticed your landing technique was much more from the commercial aviation world - a much flatter approach and a float at least 300 ft past the end of the runway. I also learnt in a 182 and I'm intriqued to know if this is how light aircraft training is now taught as I notice a lot of younger pilots flying what I call commercial approachs in Bush aircraft.

@purelivingforlife 5 жыл бұрын
There no one way to land right? Everything must be considered. Wind gusts, gross weight, skill, runway conditions and length. Too fast is bad and too slow is REALLLLY bad. Teaching to land at published approach speeds half flaps reduces margin for error vs too slow (full flap, low power, steep angle) approaches. More float is better than a stall. As time progresses all pilots should learn zero def flaps all the way to full flap, forward slip landings. That’s not required to be a private pilot. The worst thing is a new pilot accustomed to low gross weight jumps in with all their buddies at or near gross and used full flaps on a hot day over the asphalt and rounds out too late smacking the runway. Instruction had become all about the numbers because the airlines have proven its more consistent. Over time the “feel” of it comes around and you begin to fly more by touch than by procedure. Most fresh private pilots have no business dropping into truly short strips. Those skills are best learned from experienced pilots. A true short field landing on a 8000 ft runway is really unnecessary risk. Full flaps comes with risk. Power on stall on go around while fighting heavy trim is a real scenario. Many pilots express that 20 deg flaps is plenty and puts less stress on the airframe. I think one thing we can all agree on is that every pilot has his or her style and we all fly different. The best we can hope for is to learn from each other and be the safest we can be in any given scenario.

I was one of ones you mentioned. In 1970, with 8 hours in a Piper colt, I soloed. Took 2 more lessons after, and never made it back. Money, time, and kids, did me in. Glad to see you make it.

Absolutetly incredible! Thank you to both for such an awesome documentary. As we say in the world of hot air balloons... “The winds have welcomed you with softness and the sun has blessed you with warm hands. You have flown so high and so well that God has joined you in you laughter and set you down into the loving arms of mother Earth!”

Thanks Jesse for sharing this awesome event In your life. I think I get why it took so long for you to post this video. You’ve probably thought long and hard about publishing it at all. It’s a very personal voyage going through the hoops set forth by the FAA to become a pilot and successfully accomplishing those task must have filled you with so much joy and pride that not just any video would do it justice. So thanks for taking the time to tell the tale as it should have been told with the ups and downs that came your way on this journey. It’s not for everyone and I think you gave a true representation of what it takes. But still left the door open for those that dream of taking to the skies and left the ultimate question unanswered “ What if?”

thank you for this upload, it was really cool to see this process and what's behind it. I've never had an interest in flying but this was really interesting and intriguing for me. Congrats Jesse on the license.

I hadn’t realized that I had been watching you all for as long as I had until a couple videos ago. I saw the length of this video and almost passed on watching it. Glad I didn’t. In my opinion, your best video. So much more detail than the other pilot videos. Glad you didn’t edit out the scared comment. Thank you
