When I was a TV and film puppeteer, I was one of only a handful of British puppeteers that used straightscan monitors. The vast majority preferred reverse scan (which was always a PITA especially if one of the reverse scan performers somehow found themselves using my straight scan mid scene, throwing them off). It’s been 20 years since I shifted over to CG animation and VFX but weirdly now finding myself missing the performance aspect of puppeteering. A lot.

I'm a little late to the field of puppetry, but i have found myself in a position of teaching Drama to 5th graders in China. Your channel has opened up a new avenue of content to be taught to my students. Every year we do an "English Day" at the school and I would love some advice on doing a show based on the "Yip Yip characters from Sesame Street. It may not necessarily be a live show, but it would be great if you could do a tutorial on how to make the characters and a demonstration on how a small group go 6th graders could perform a simple sketch. I have some ideas brewing, but have never once in my life made a puppet. I plan on spend all of my summer holiday figuring out and tinkering with it. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I wish you the best moving forward!

Update: Just finished the stage and most of the lights are here from China. I was using my big monitor from my computer on my desk but turning my head might not be so good when moving the puppet, so I ordered a 12 in monitor for $60 and should be here in a month. Enough time to finish the lighting and practice with the puppets. Need to get on Instagram to communicate better...

This may blow your mind and I’d love to see you try it. Seen Eyed Puppetry: a small camera is hidden in an area on the puppet’s head and the puppeteer wears a small screen on their arm or chest. This COULD be a more cost effective method since you can purchase a GoPro and have it paired with your personal device. Also, this simplifies training since it is difficult to line up the character’s eyes with the camera. With this technique, you can just turn the head and see what the puppet sees as you do. Imagine this, you construct an eye that an snap off the head and inside there is a small compartment for a small video camera, you pair it with a smart device and just go to town.
@PuppetNerd5 жыл бұрын
This might help with a live performance. But not for a video recording. The method you described would make it impossible to know if you are in the frame of the camera.
@jordanezell51325 жыл бұрын
Oh, I never thought of that. I thought it was a great for tv since a similar technique was used in the Gorgs from Fragle Rock. Could you try it anyway?
@PuppetNerd5 жыл бұрын
That’s a bit of a different situation since they are not using a raised set like I was demonstrating. You need to see the framing of the shot in that case to make sure you are not too high or too low. That’s impossible to gauge if you were looking out of the puppets eyes unless you were on a traditional set (as I mentioned) but then you would see the puppeteer.
