Science really is everywhere! From the Big Bang to quantum mechanics to free will to ice skating, we explore it all featuring Neil deGrasse Tyson, Chuck Nice, theoretical physicist Brian Greene, neuroscientist Heather Berlin, rapper Baba Brinkman, and Olympic silver medalist figure skater Sasha Cohen.
Recorded live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on March 9, 2018
Note from StarTalk Editors...
For further reading on the complex topic of ice melting under pressure, Dr. Tyson recommends the following two scholarly articles on the subject, one on the general topic of slippery ice (www.dropbox.co..., and the other on the Capt. Robert Falcon Scott expedition to the South Pole (www.dropbox.co..., whose diary entry noted, "The (ice) surface, lately a very good hard one, is coated with a layer of woolly crystals [...] (that) cause impossible friction to the runners. God help us, we can’t keep up this pulling, that is certain.”

Joe Chang First of all, improve your grammar. Second of all, your supposed genius is a failure to recognize your ignorance. If things traveled through space instantly, this would break all laws of causality. I would like to note a flaw in your reasoning. Is there not space in between particles? Should light instantly travel that distance? Should electrons be able pass on light with their universal repulsion force instantly? If so, than the speed of light should always be infinite. If not, than what is the delay? I would like you to think about how long it takes an electron to transmit light and why. I would also like to add why does light reflect off of objects? It is because they have momentum and therefore cannot travel at a infinite speed or would have a infinite momentum, destroying all of reality? What about the microwave background radiation? Shouldn’t there be none if light travels instantly across a vacuum? If Joe Chang isn’t the person who posed this 1st grader hypothesis then I am sorry for posing you as the idiot, I guess we can laugh about it together.

The thing is, that saying you want to be a educator also implies that its not just about the laughs. I find it slightly disrespectful towards the people that are invited to tell their stories and share their own insights, to then basically just not listen to them. I have enormous respect for Neil and his knowledge and skill to share it in a story telling way, but that doesn't mean its always done perfectly or that people cant point that out.

It's being delayed by unresolved issues from sexual harassment charges against Tyson.
@Jealod24
@Jealod24 5 жыл бұрын
Joe Horn it was delayed because of two reports of sexual harassment against Tyson... one by a professor and another by his long time former assistant. The company reviewed the allegations, deemed there was either no wrongdoing or insufficient evidence of wrongdoing, and have reinstated Star Talk and Cosmos. The article I read was published in March and at that time they hadn’t decided on a date for cosmos... but it’s been a few months, and barring any other women coming forward with allegations, it a new date has likely been set. The article was published in Variety

I remember thinking about the Big Bang being a cyclical event when I was pretty young. It made more sense than anything. Essentially after the universe falls back into itself (or it gets so cold everything dies), the amount of energy compacts until it creates another Big Bang, etc....... no beginning & no end.

Do NOT let Chuck fool you. He's been hanging around NDT for a while now, and it's rubbed off in a big way. Chuck may not have advanced degrees, but he is NO FOOL. He's a smart guy. Probably one of the few comedians who could go into a room full of scientists and actually get them to laugh at stuff THEY STUDIED IN SCHOOL. Well done, Chuck :)
