Күн бұрын

On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Jordan Klepper are together again to answer fan-submitted Cosmic Queries about sharks. Since both Neil and Jordan are self-proclaimed non-experts on sharks, they’re joined by shark scientist Jasmin Graham. Jasmin is also a project coordinator at the Marine Science Laboratory Alliance Center of Excellence and a co-founder of Minorities in Shark Science.
You’ll learn how climate change impacts sharks. Jasmin explains how different species will have to deal with different issues that arise from climate change. Discover more about the size of sharks and why most sharks aren’t the size of the great white sharks you see in popular culture. We investigate the megalodon. Could there still be megalodons roaming the ocean deep? Jasmin helps us poke holes in all megalodon theories. You’ll hear how the evolution of whales helps us understand the extinction of the megalodon.
Discover more about sharks’ intelligence. Have they reached a plateau? Will they be able to adapt to climate change? We dive into the “science” of the Sharknado film series. Neil reminisces on his star turn in The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time.
You’ll find out what innovations we can originally stemmed from shark research. Jasmin explains how sharks have influenced skin care products and the engineering of underwater vehicles. You’ll also find out what we’re doing for shark conservation. And, Jasmin enlightens us on the similarities between dolphins and sharks, even though they seem wildly different in the public eye.
Discover more about baby sharks and the absence of parental care. You’ll hear how noise pollution has influenced shark behavior. We also look at how the moon influences shark behavior. Lastly, we explore the phrase, “sharks can smell blood in the water.” All that, plus, Jasmin tells us if Greenland sharks really live to be 500 years old.

Question: I know they are saying we cannot transfer data using entanglement. So does that mean we are not able to take a measurement of an entangled particle while also applying the spin of our choosing? If we could force a spin on an entangled particle then couldn’t we use atomic clocks on both ends to synchronize some sort of binary system. Or would relativity offset the clocks once one of the clocks was moved relative to the other??

Question: I understand how we are detecting dark energy because we can compare red shift to standard candles. But how are we determining the mass of whole galaxies to detect dark matter? Seems that it would be hard to pin down an accurate mass for so many stars, dust and rocks. Appreciate your content and am looking forward to an answer to my first time asking a question =)

Do sharks ever had existential crisis when they realized the snack they had when they were babies were their brother and sister?
@Felicat82
@Felicat82 4 жыл бұрын
Only if you assume sharks have anything like human emotions. Fish in general are very alien to us, birds and lizards, too. I'm not sure that non-mammals have the right kind of brains to experience emotion they way mammals do. They aren't typically as smart as mammals, either, with some very glaring exceptions, such as African grays and other parrots. To experience emotion, you have to also be intelligent on a deeper level than the average bird/fish/lizard.
@xdragon2k
@xdragon2k 4 жыл бұрын
@@Felicat82 It was a joke question. However, I do believe it depends on what kind of social interaction it has with its peers. Animals that are hunting independently will not feel burdened by the loss of its siblings that aren't supposed to be around and are just the competition anyway.

Stomach temperatures of White and Mako sharks were recorded. Stomach temperatures were elevated over ambient water temperatures by as much as 14.0 °C. Stomach temperatures varied within a narrow range while ambient water temperature fluctuated over a much larger range, showing that these species regulate its body temperature. This data, in combination with previous work on the physiology and anatomy of White and Mako sharks, indicate that the White and Mako shark is endothermic. It appears that thermoregulation in these sharks has allows them to inhabit cold water and remain active predators of swift and agile prey such as pelagic fish and seals etc. Not all sharks are cold blooded so it seems.

Jasmine is a lovely, smart and knowledgeable person. I would love to be friends and hang out with her. It's a pity she lives on another continent, along another ocean... By the way, those epaulette sharks - I did not find them adorable AT ALL. They seem like a mix of Lizards, snakes, tadpoles AND sharks. Stuff of nightmares! The bonethead shark is just a little better.
