ezzz9 of course not, just like you couldn't live on the moon without an incredible amount of engineering and construction. once we are on mars they can focus on building enclosed environments for living, it's a higher risk of cancer due to more cosmic radiation and from the solar radiation as well, but the soil can be filtered and so can the gasses in the thin atmosphere to create things we need, it's definitely not impossible, just not easy like living on earth is. giving up isn't proving it's impossible, trying and failing would though.

Regarding the first question asked about PTSD, while there are probably genetic markers, and certainly behavioral differences, ultimately it seems to be 50/50 nature and nurture. The implications of the "nurture" are interesting though. Importantly, this man presumes none of his unit previously had PTSD. If you're already been through something traumatic, it seems to equip you somewhat. It would seem that there's even an exponential correlation going back to early childhood. The earlier something bad happens (the curve probably goes flat before memories are being constructed but peaks when your stream of consciousness "begins") the more impact it has, exponentially so. Thus the older one becomes, the more intense the event needs to be to put you off course. If your course has already been skewed somehow by trauma (especially if repeated or ongoing), an equivocal trauma at a later date may not register at all. There are so many variables to it.
@TheAlpineProject
@TheAlpineProject 6 жыл бұрын
An inverse to the numbed soldier is the dimwitted soldier though. Intense depression or mania, whether or not it comes from nature or nurture, either extreme can present an apparent lack of reaction to a traumatic situation.

War is the single greatest waste of human resources in the history of history yet I find it totally fascinating and can watch gun videos for hours, especially on the engineering of them as well as war tactics etc. Really weird. Also when counting war deaths you have to count both sides and the people who died non-violent deaths directly attributable to the war. In the Iraq War only roughly 10% of the civilian deaths were violent while the rest were due to issues like cessation of services like medicine, food, water etc.

What people have not addressed with the Patton slapping incident is how upset Patton would get around wounded soldiers. Patton was himself suffering from accumulated PTSD when the slapping incident occurred. Patton was also worried for the slapped soldiers, that they would be so ashamed later.

It isn't some "soldiers", it's some brains. Most PTSD sufferers, myself included, did not get the disorder from military service. It's a response to stress, like a structural failure. There is no telling who is susceptible to PTSD.

Neil, I would ad natural disasters as a big factor in people. In 2014 the balkans were hit by intense floods, although we have had relatively recent wars, and still have everything but a healthy relationship between the countries of former Yugoslavia, everyone was helping each other, Serbs, Croats, Bosnians, Muslim, Christian, notthing mattered, for weeks we have all just been HUMAN. Well of course, as the watter went away so did the unity, and that is unfortunately also due to the fact that we are all HUMAN...

About the medical advances brought about by war. There are two examples that spring up in my mind right now. Both are from the first world war, which I think most of us can agree is the absolute worst war in the history of the human race rivaled only by the east front of it's sequel. The first thing I want to point out is that plastic surgery was invented as a direct result of the war. There were so many young men coming from the front that were absolutely mangled, that there was a need to invent a whole new field of medicine in order to help them fit back into society. Plastic surgery improved a lot during and after the great war, but it was still in its infancy, and many of the people that were treated committed suicide because they just didn't fit into society. There are pictures of some of the worst cases, but look them up at your own discresion, it's harrowing stuff. Another discovery was made (I believe on the Somme) when a wounded soldier was discovered on the battlefield, days after he had been wounded. His stomach was open and his guts had spilled, but he was still alive and his wounds were essentially completely clean and sanitary. The thing is that maggots eat only dead flesh, they don't touch alive flesh, and maggots had cleaned the man's wound and kept it from infecting. The man was brought behind lines, and his wounds were dressed. He survived. Thus the medicinal value of maggots was discovered and they are still used in treatment today.

PTSD has been around as long as there have been humans. With the Iraq and Afghanistan and wars, it's just become more common place to talk about. There's a movie that was made in 1946 called "The Best Years of Our Lives" and those "character types" are still just as prevalent today as in '46. "PTSD" is just the label we assign for dealing with significant psychological trauma with respect to the fact that "psych trauma" varies from person to person. If I'm in traffic and I almost slam into someone, or if someone bumps into me, that may only be traumatic for less than an hour or so but it probably wouldn't impact the way I drive, at least not long term. If I'm at a dead stop and a car loses control and slams into me at a high speed, any time I find myself at a dead stop, I may be concerned about that for the rest of my life. Maybe I'm constantly checking my mirrors, maybe I'm checking traffic reports before I start driving to make sure I won't even put myself in that situation. PTSD is simply how short and/or long term psychological manifests itself after the actual event.

Hello StarTalk. I don't know if you take questions from KZbin for Cosmic Queries episodes, but I would have an interesting one for Mr. Neil. *IF* the humanity would build a Dyson Sphere around the Sun, what resources could we harvest thanks to it? And would be there a way to measure it's total mass?
@KeithA45
@KeithA45 6 жыл бұрын
Good question, but perhaps you meant to build the sphere around the Sun? A Dyson Sphere would capture energy from a star within it, so one around Earth might block out the sky and end all life

(One of t?) (T)he soldier(s) that Patton slapped had been in combat for over 60 days and had pneumonia and a fever of 104 F (40c), but he hadn't yet been shot and so had no wounds. The doctors and nurses were livid at Patton's actions and that is how the story made it into the press. Given the multiple witnesses and multiple reports, it is possible that their were multiple soldiers that Patton struck.
