On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice sit down with Dr. Irwin Redlener, Director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, to discuss everything we need to know about the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
We start with the basics: what is the Coronavirus? Irwin gives us details on the virus that’s been making waves around the world. You’ll find out what we know and what we don’t know so far. Explore what makes something a pandemic and how viruses like this come about. Learn the similarities between COVID-19 and the seasonal flu. We discuss the processes behind getting a vaccine in place to deal with this issue. In the meantime, Irwin tells us all the things we can do to be preventative.
We discuss whether people are over-reacting to the outbreak. Irwin explains why paying attention to the updates about the virus is appropriate and why going over the top and panicking is not appropriate. You’ll learn about the most important aspects of disaster preparedness when it comes to virus outbreaks.
Irwin shares why clear and transparent communication between a government and its citizens is one of the most vital measures to have in place during a pandemic. Lastly, we explore the reasons to be hopeful during the upcoming weeks. All that, plus, we answer your fan-submitted Cosmic Queries.

Please thank the people still working and don't take them for granted. We WILL get through this, but it takes all of us to do the right thing. Thank you Neil. Just came back from work, not feeling too well and since been travelling last week I assume its wise to not only wear a mask and gloves, but to self isolate myself too as my job includes lots of contact with many people on daily basis. Even tho it is very busy for us, as we are distribution buisness and our job is to make sure the stock is delivered to stores, I want to be responsible and do not spread whatever sickness I got. Maybe its just a flu, there is no way for me to know now since in UK they wouldnt test you unless its very serious, but I dont want to panic. Just want to say that we all need to make sure the virus wont be spreading around with quick pace. We need to do our best to protect ourselves and the others as well. We will get through it. Meanwhile I have much more time to watch Cosmos and Star Talk, so win win :)

Well, then listen and watch. Besides, it is not interrupting. It's called a conversation. In conversations, especially intellectual conversations, both sides will have input at various times. Those willing to listen before formulating a response will be able to take part in the discussion. Neil listened. That's why he had input to insert at the times he did so. Not to mention, its his show. If he wants to inject a statement, that is exactly what he will do. Funny, it is only fans of rogan who claim to be butthurt at not understanding how intellectual discussions take place. The rest of Earth is just fine allowing greater minds to speak when they have something to say. The guy did say what he wanted to say. Just not the second you wanted him to. And I am forced to ask. WHY, in the effort of logic and reason, do you seem to feel that discussions which you are not a part of must go the way you want them to go? Why must it be your way and not another's way? The information got out to the public, and that was the most important aspect.
@theduder2617
@theduder2617 4 жыл бұрын
I must add, these "interruptions" were direct efforts to have something explained further, or "simplified" if needed. The entire goal of this show is to bring science to those who would otherwise not have access, not be very interested, or who need an easier to understand format. Example: Dr. Redlener said FEMA. Neil wanted it clarified that the acronym stood for "Federal Emergency Management Agency" in case there was a listener who did not previously know. It's about sharing knowledge minus the calculus to put it simply.
@nix9vex13

@@theduder2617 it is called a preference within a conversation. You sir are very biassed. Anyhow. I thoroughly enjoy NdgT talk and he is a voice of reason for this generation like Sagan was for my generation. I do think Sagan had more panache in a conversation, letting the other party finish and than politely answer in great detail whereas Tyson feels like he is trying to "pop" things up a little too much. It can be irritating to some, incl me, that have a greater attention span than a meme length sound byte and don't mind waiting for the response to unfold in full. To each his own i guess. I hope you have a lovely day. Keep safe.

@@youuuuuuuuuuutube true... Apart from in Europe and the US, it's still exponential. Its not started to trail off at all. At the very start, while the infection was still only known in China, it was forecast that over 2b people could be infected... My point is, the leaders in Europe and the US have failed their population so badly, but failing to understand how long they had to lock the infected regions down.

@@UKMonkey The big failure was to be too slow to respond and not close all airports immediately, which made me angry actually. Countries like Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan reacted super fast, and with amazing results. Even Korea did fine (there was this religious case, but apart from that, the government did all the right steps). About the curve, it's useful to know its shape because we can tell when we have reached the middle of the curve (which is, once the number of daily cases starts slowing down).

@@youuuuuuuuuuutube absolutely. The time to act was at the very start... They should've quarantined everyone from China immediately. Frankly, the governments tried to stay open to limit the impact on the insurance companies and banks.... But the cost is a lot of lives and maybe the permanent introduction of this virus to the species, since it'll be able to mutate faster the more hosts it infects. On top of the mess caused by brexit, and the retraction of Obamacare, the damage caused is just unforgivable

28:06 - I still carry around handkerchiefs in my pocket. (I am not that old - just in my 30s). I have never had the need to offer them to other. If that ever happens, it will be an offer to keep it forever. I primarily use it to wipe my hands AFTER washing them. Occasionally, on a particularly warm day, I might use it to wipe off some sweat and then put it away for a wash asap.

Them and bandanas have tons of uses. Wipe sweat away. Blow your nose. Cover your head in sun or in the cold to decrease heat loss. Bandage/dressing for an injury. Tourniquet for a bad limb injury. Face cover to keep out dust, pollen, other particulates. If they are 100% cotton you can light them easily to start a fire. Carry things wrapped up in them.

When COVID 19 inundates ICU's all over the country, what happens to the other patients who need ICU care? Diabetics, cardiac patients, etc. Take northern IL for example. Many hospitals have gone bankrupt here and are now closed. Resources are already stretched thin and are being wasted by untrained, unprepared personnel. It's not just the US, but the whole world is in huge trouble.

@BigDaddyCool42, no, your information is wrong. This is considerably more deadly than any flu since the 1918 Spanish Influenza outbreak. Please do follow the experts and learn from them. If this were the common flu, we wouldn't have hospitals trying to figure out how to ventilate two patients with one ventilator.

Joe Scott „answers with Joe“ has a nice complementary video to this one. Two points these guys seem to have missed: 1) the main problem is not mortality rate, but hospitalization rate. And that one creates a lot of collateral damage. 2) „immunization parties“ would also increase the chance of mutation.

My thing is, if it has potential to reoccur, what will a national quarantine accomplish? At some point life has to resume again. It may be a situation where we just have to deal with it until it's cured. Life has to continue, we can't just sit in our houses wishing the virus away.

Have you seen that graph by Kurzgesagt about the load on the healthcare industry vs the progression of the virus over time? What he didn't show is that above that "healthcare" line on the graph, is you and everyone you know being pushed into a big hole in the ground by a bulldozer because nobody could get treatment because the virus spread too fast. We have to slow it down!
@araag.4257
@araag.4257 4 жыл бұрын
@Ajxni The quarantine goal is to slow the progression enough so that the medical facilities and medical staff don't get overwhelmed and have to face a difficult situation where they have to choose who to treat and who "to abandon" like it is the case in Italy right now.

There is a video with an Australian man who spoke to an insider from a Mason meeting. The video was uploaded in 2010. They were laughing and talking about the Anglo-Saxon Agenda. They said "China will catch a cold," their exact words. The events to follow will be a war with China and Iran, and nuclear exchange, with the end goal being a 95% population reduction. This is terrifying and it is real. The China flu was planned over a decade ago.
