Күн бұрын

On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson sits down with first-time comic co-host Felicia Madison and returning friend of the show and Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer Laurie Garrett, to debunk disinformation and get straight to the facts about vaccines. As we watch the rise of anti-science movements, it’s important to set the record straight and what better way to do it than answer fan-submitted questions on the topic.
Laurie explains why the rise of anti-science movements stem from a rise in distrust of government. You’ll find out if there are public health policy avenues that can help combat the growing anti-vaccine movement. Explore why seeing a disease in action might be the most effective way to show people why vaccines are vital to public safety.
You’ll learn about “herd immunity” and why not getting vaccinated impacts far more than just the individual. Learn the dangers of a Measles outbreak. You’ll hear about a Measles outbreak that started at Disneyland and caused California to quickly re-think its laws on vaccines. We try and nail down the main reasons why parents are worried about getting their children vaccinated, and Felicia shares what her own worries were before she got her own children vaccinated.
Laurie explains why certain chemicals and preservatives are used in common vaccines. We also explore why not all vaccines have 100% success rates. Find out if you can get a vaccine shot without parental permission. We also investigate the difference between eliminating a disease and eradicating it.
You’ll also hear more about fighting against diseases when we travel to other planets, and we reminisce about H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds and Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain. All that, plus, Felicia asks, “Can we eradicate stupidity?”
This episode originally aired as a podcast on March 8, 2019.

Why the immune system wreckage by junk food, sugary drinks etc etc isn’t being discussed which is the major reason for ppl not being able to fight it...
@varyolla435
@varyolla435 4 жыл бұрын
I guess that is why mankind for millennia - long before the advent of "junk food" - died like flies in the face of infectious diseases. lol! Go back a century or two before modern allopathic medicine and vaccines and you see where parents had 10 kids because several of them would die before reaching adulthood with the rest barely surviving past middle age owing to infectious diseases. Mind you these people worked their tails off - having no modern conveniences - making them highly "active" in their lifestyle while they ate 100% "organic" foods................and still they died. Moral of the story: so not only have you utterly failed in your facile attempt at science = you also apparently slept through history claim as well. Better luck next time.

@@varyolla435 Vaccines are just another step further away from nature. As humans become more and more dependant on medical conditioning, we will eventually need total assistance in order to reproduce grow and live. But that is along time from now. So for now just enjoy this transition period while it lasts.

@@varyolla435 We know that a lot of "medical" advances to prolong life haven't been just because of vaccines. It has a lot to do with sanitation. Your argument basically narrows down to only vaccines save lives. No, diet can and does harm and so do diseases. But diseases are often better cured through diet. Vaccines are a band aid until we find out the real cause and cure.

My middle son (who is now 30 - this was a while ago) had a very severe reaction to the Pertussis portion of the DPT when he was an infant. (requiring hospitalization) How the doctors knew that was which part that caused it, I don't know. But they did, and they 'fixed' him...and then he got DT shots instead... it was never a consideration to NOT vaccinate. (but then I grew up knowing someone who had had polio..one of the last cases before the vaccine became available...and I wanted ANY vaccines available to keep my children safe!)

The pertussis vaccine in use 30 years ago was known to cause reactions. It was used because the death rate for the reactions was far lower than that for the illness. The vaccine has been reformulated. Now it causes fewer reactions but it does not stay effective as long. The new formula is why adults need booster shots.

@@jowhitaker4194 that was the vaccine that caused my brain damage, DPT shot in 1972. I had a gran mal seizure immediately after the shot. I had a seizure in the waiting room while Mom was paying the bill. I had a seizure almost once a month for about 10 years until they finally stopped. I had to take anti-convulsant meds for years. When I was 44, I developed a very painful neurological disorder called trigeminal neuralgia. I had a craniotomy in 2010, it helped some. I've often wondered if the damage from that shot caused this. In spite of this, I still get vaccines. Only time I've gotten the flu was when I didn't get a shot.

Re smallpox: There is serious concern that global warming may be causing old graves dug into arctic permafrost to "open" as the ground melts. Some of those graves contain smallpox victims who died a century or more ago. Can the virus -- Variola major -- live that long when frozen? Will it be contagious? No one is absolutely sure.

Interest, these people are so misinformed. Case in point: the German government has a specialized court system. One german court system has legal control of science and all legal aspects to it. The Supreme court of german science canvases the peer reviewed science and medical literature and FOUND NO DIRECT PROOF THAT THE DISEASE CALLED MEASLES WAS CAUSED BY A VIRUS. This ruling was made in 2016 in a case involving the world acclaimed virologist Dr. STEFAN LANKA. When you research this be careful with the wording: the court did not judge that virus did NOT CAUSE MEASLES, BUT THERE WAS NO LITERATURE PRESENTING PROOF THAT A VIRUS CAUSED MEASLES. note: current research involve the theories suggesting the that exomes, which like viruses, are bits of RNA or DNA the need bacterial or a higher form of genetic machinery to reproduce. The real problem with vaccine is they are now designed to change the patient's DNA (this has resulted in the sterilization of the vaccinated) and the metals (aluminum, mercury, etc) that then react to EMF.

@Bal10on I think it best you don't assume my state of mind regarding your comment. It is best if you have the education and means to enlighten all of us with your research and peer reviewed thesis. Watching biased documentaries does not prove anything. Your comment does not offer a balanced view of vaccination. For example, if you wrote that since 1980, 6 million children have been saved from the ravages of such diseases as measles, mumps, rubella, small pox etc versus a certain number of those who had an adverse reaction, your point of view might gain some traction. As it stands, you are coming across as an alarmist who doesn't fully appreciate the information available.

@Bal10on There is no cure for smallpox, but vaccination can be used very effectively to prevent infection from developing if given during a period of up to four days after a person has been exposed to the virus. This is the strategy that was used to eradicate the disease during the 20th century.. quoted from the first google search result just in case you are interested... oh but it's probably been paid for by the Gates and Clinton crowd eh?

They talk about "getting educated" yet none of them can answer the most basic of questions, just talk around the issue. That's why you never see a balanced debate with an informed panel on any of these shows. They're house of cards would easily fall apart under real scrutiny. Hell, they're losing ground with the public inspite of the industry bias. Godspeed and stay strong.

I'm old enough to have had most of these childhood diseases, (apart from smallpox, although my granny told me stories about it) despite my mom vaccinating me very carefully with what ever was available. Maybe she was late or sometimes it didn't work properly, who knows, in the end I got my resistance one way or another. We were not scared of the illnesses, we knew that another deadly illness may be waiting around the next corner. But you hedge your bets with a good vaccine. That time was different in that knowledge drove people to vaccinate if they were able to afford it. We also suspected that over-vaccination might lead to auto-immunity, so we carefully studied the products beforehand. Free or more marketing doesn't automatically mean that people stand in line to receive help, they may instead view it with suspicion. People need to understand why they are vaccinating, not guilt-tripped or ordered around by the cabal of the almighty scientists, as they might view it. ;)

I'm not against vaccines, but after receiving the DPTa vaccine, each time my son was hospitalized for oxygen deprivation. I told the doctors and nurses about his reaction and they insisted the immunization had nothing to do with it, and they gave it to him again. He almost died twice. This was in the U.S. My point is that ... Some "anti-vaxers" may have similar experiences that made them suspicious of vaccines. Not religious or philosophical reasons. And the guest assertion that there were only issues with vaccines outside the U.S. could be incorrect.
@varyolla435
@varyolla435 4 жыл бұрын
Ok - so let's consider what you claim here. 1 - first of all the DTaP schedule calls for 4 shots over the first 18 months of life. Yet you only note 2 here = so what happened to the other ones??? 2 - next and most importantly is your claim of telling the "doctors and nurses" about an alleged reaction. That is oxymoronic considering that if your child reacted as claimed = your doctor would have had to prescribe the vaccine + and upon hospitalization would have treated the child and thus would not need to be "reminded" by you about the occurrence as it would be in their medical record. 3 - meanwhile when a individual shows up in the emergency room than one of the first questions asked is if they have recently received any medications = to include vaccines. So again if a person reacted badly to vaccination necessitating hospitalization that would quickly be identified and recorded. 4 - lastly is that what you describe reflects an allergic reaction rather than a reaction to the organism in the vaccine per se. Most serious vaccine reactions are either allergic - which is not the fault of the vaccine as an allergic reaction denotes an idiopathic issue with the person who has a sensitivity that others do not - or else they are reacting to the actual organism in the vaccine. This is evidenced as you see similar symptomatology in the vaccine reaction and in the actual illness the vaccine prevents. As an example. The Measles vaccine can rarely cause encephalitis in susceptible people - while actual Measles also causes it = just much more often. Moral of the story: so your claim frankly makes little sense I'm afraid. If your child was allergic to something in the vaccine resulting in anaphylaxis then the provider would not prescribe a second dose. If they reacted to the attenuated toxins in the vaccine - DTaP is a "toxoid" vaccine containing attenuated toxins from the bacteria which cause Tetanus and Diphtheria as well as a recombinant version of Pertussis - meaning only pieces of the bacteria - those illnesses do not typically cause what you claim. So that means that allergic reaction is the most likely candidate here unless there is something going on with the child you do not relate. In any event as alluded to above = a child which could not tolerate exposure to weakened organisms, toxins, or else pieces of organisms such as are found in vaccines would probably react the same - or worse - upon catching what vaccines prevent and suffering the full-blown illness. What you note reflects an idiopathic issue with the individual and not the vaccine which are made to be tolerated by as many people as possible. So a few individuals with a nut allergy do not make peanuts bad as most folks can tolerate them. Similarly in the time before there were vaccines the actual illnesses vaccines prevent used to cause thousands of people to end up hospitalized resulting in lifetime health problems and even death. Vaccines on the other hand cause these events rarely given their composition = making them a better alternative with better odds as you are at risk no matter what. You do not exist in a bubble you know and thus infectious disease are always out there and accordingly in human populations. So it is always sad when a child reacts badly to vaccines but at least the vaccine gave them better odds compared to the illnesses they prevent. Have a nice day.

@AkNahlej AllEyeSeer First of all, do you mean 70 vaccines literally or is this said only to emphasize that we are expected or forced to take a lot of them? Because in my country, I think we had them about three times, as I can recall. Yes, stating a list of chemicals in order to imply that they are detrimental to humans without specifying the dosage is fear mongering, as even dihidrogen-monoxide can poison you at a certain dosage. Therefore, ‘the dose makes the toxin’ is toxicology 101. I'm currently doing a paper on terrorist chemical warfare for my master degree studies and I am obliged to specify which dosage does what to humans, since it can vary from no serious effects to lethality, which is vastly different. I realize he mentioned binding agents and rest assured I will look into it. Also, elaborate 'repeated dosage', please, I was never asked to retake a vaccine. I don't know what you mean by it. I will also add that we are not required to take 70 vaccines to live on this natural planet, but they help us prolong our lives and prevent certain diseases (unless they are made improperly or if you are immuno-compromised, but those are whole new topics). People have always lived on this natural planet, but why do we have the biggest population and a longer life expectancy nowadays, especially if the goddamn BiG pHaRmA is always trying to kill us?

@blub blub that would be pseudo research on your behalf. Because... "CDC Fails to Produce Studies Which Support its Claim that Vaccines Given During the First Six Months of Life “Do Not Cause Autism” AUSTIN, TX (March 5, 2020) -- In a federal lawsuit filed by the non-profit Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN), the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has failed to produce scientific studies that back up its long-declared assertion that vaccines given to babies in the first six months of life do not cause autism. The CDC claims on its website that “Vaccines Do Not Cause Autism.”1 Despite this claim, studies have found between 40% and 70% of parents with an autistic child continue to blame vaccines for their child’s autism, typically pointing to vaccines given during the first six months of life.2 Vaccines given during the first six months of life, according to the CDC’s childhood vaccine schedule, include three doses each of DTaP, HepB, Hib, PCV13 and IPV, for a total of fifteen doses in these six months.3 In the summer of 2019, ICAN submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the CDC for “All studies relied upon by CDC to claim that the DTaP vaccine does not cause autism.”4 ICAN also submitted this same request for HepB, Hib, PCV13 and IPV vaccines, and additionally requested that the CDC provide studies to support its claim that the cumulative exposure to these vaccines during the first six months of life do not cause autism.5 Despite months of demands, the CDC failed to produce a single study in response to these FOIA requests.6 ICAN was therefore forced to sue the CDC in federal court, where the CDC finally entered into a stipulation, signed by a federal court judge, that made clear it cannot scientifically support its claim that these vaccines do not cause autism.7 In the stipulation, the CDC was only able to identify 20 studies: > One relating to MMR (a vaccine ICAN did not challenge); "

There are so many doctors and scientists who know that vaccines do not work and cause harm, such as Dr. Robert Mendelsohn who changed his mind after 30 years of giving them. Dr. Richard Moskowitz, with 50 years of experience wrote Vaccines: A Reappraisal. Dr. Molden took before and after pictures of children's brains and eyes, showing the damage caused by the MMR shot. He was murdered. Proving vaccine damage is bad for business in the vaccine industry which is all it is - a multi-billion dollar one!. If they were safe, manufacturers would not refuse to be held liable for damages. Historically, vaccines have always come out AFTER a disease has already declined and flattened. There has never been a vaccine that has proven to be safe. Every vaccine contains aluminum in an amount that far exceeds the allowable limit set by the FDA. Have the courage to watch the new Truth About Vaccines hosted by Ty and Charlene Bolinger, especially episode 2 where the amounts of aluminum for various vaccines are discussed. The worst is in the Hep vaccine given to newborns. You can never make America smart again if you keep on pumping aluminum into people. Check the website Vaccine Choice Canada. My daughter had seizures after her DPT shots 35 years ago and that's when I began my research, digging deep and finding out the truth. I would love to face-off with Laurie. She wouldn't stand a chance against me and what I know about vaccines. Unvaccinated children are so much healthier than children whose immune systems are being destroyed by the most putrid ingredients contained in vaccines. Read an insert and try to justify how any of the ingredients could possibly enhance your health.

I don't know why anyone thinks that safety concerns are just becoming a problem now. Vaccine injury is as old as vaccines and appears to be most commonly related to the use of adjuvants, like aluminum, that some people are unable to detoxify properly. Another concern is certainly retroviruses, like coronaviruses or the cancer-causing SV40, that are present in the animal tissues used in the manufacture of vaccines. Nobody who is literate about vaccines would argue that they are completely safe. People simply disagree as to whether they are safe and effective enough to justify their widespread use.

In 1997 i got misleas at age of 26 years old. My experience was "soft" because I was vaccinated when young (my mum says that) but what gives me the baddest consequences was about 3 weeks later when I woked at 3 am mentally confused, my mum and mu sister saw my confusion and give me to hospital, after a few hours, and translated to other 3 hospitals, the diagnose was "encephalitys post misleas" an inflamarion of the brain, this give me 38 days in a isolation hospital specialized in infective diseases. The encephalitys disease have a dead rate of 40% and the survivors had heavy mentally consequences for brain dages, about a year later a doctor who visited me, tells me I was miracled because minimal signals of brain damages i had. Well, after olmost 23 years I can tell you I'm not sure if I Was miracled or not but for sure, now i have several memory problems with short time memory, it is hard to remember, i need to make a big work if i want to make sure i will remember what i want to memorize, and lost over 50% of my ability to concentrate. Learning new things now is worst ever, i remember books and car magazines i read 25-30 years ago, but i do not have the same experience with new readings (years ago, i used to buy some car magazines montly, well, i buyed 2 times the same mag because i can't remember i had one buyed maybe 20-25 days before and this after read that first one!). Others bad things are now present in my life, but is a long story. What i can say for this topic is "if I had not vaccinated for misleas problably i wouldn't not alive today. I had read many story of the antique diseases and the vaccination that erradicated these diseases on developed countries, i can't buy the teories of the anti-vac. I think they are probably ignorant on the subject. When do you had read and see videos about diseases of the past, the process of getting a vaccine and the total reduction of cases now or the increment of new cases in these regiond where anti-vacs are relevant, well, I have concerns. And this is what now we are seing with the covid19. In this time, I'm concern about vaccine of covid because the goverents of arounf the world are pushing to got a vaccine in months! When usually they need from 7 to 10 years to develop and produce at scale! This is insane! Human trials before any animal trial? Thid is dangerous really! Not the vaccine per se. Sorry for my bad english, is not my language. Cheers from Italy and Stay Safe.☺

I will challenge them to a debate. They cannot prove we should take vaccines. All vaccines should not be. And don't even try to call it a cancer " vaccine ". It's a cancer destroyer, preventerpreventor, but not vaccine. That's just to give the ok for the vaccines.

I would liked to hear discussion about the policies around vaccines. Like are they equaly tested like other prescription drugs, are they independently tested with placebo control groups (real placebo, not another vaccine etc.), are the providers hold accountable if vaccines injure children and/or adults.

How wrong you are! We have all the scientific evidence. Pro-vaxxers have none.

@@lindamarek3111 Quackwatch has noted that Dr. Robert Mendelsohn "engaged in irresponsible criticism of the medical profession and science-based health care during most of his medical career. Dr. Richard Moskowitz preaching homeopathy? Bwahahaaa. A system of pseudoscience that has been proven to not work at all. Everything in life is a chemical. Your body naturally contains aluminum, radium, uranium, sodium, mercury, fluorine, lead, etc. If you had ever taken a High School Chemistry class you would know that the chemical is not dangerous.......it is the dose that makes it dangerous. Well damn, looks like I'm gonna have to start decorating in January, because the less elves, the less presents, the better. I'm getting tired of the corporate holidays run solely on the desire to sell things. The Grinch is right, it is all about gifts, and even when it's not it's just bad music, annoyingly happy people, and pine needles... But I am a scrooge, so that's just my opinion.

Only yourselves have the best interest!? So without government you would have discovered vaccines? how about schools, sewage, roads, electricity. most of us me included do not know what is best for us or are children. But what is easy to know is we live much more healthy lives than we did in the past, you just have to look at the history of kids born of direct royal descent died before reaching adulthood.... our whole financial system is on the rocks because of governmental success in getting their citizens to a ripe old age.
