I am so thrilled! I just found this this morning.... I've spent 12 hours watching! I subscribed! Dr. DeGrasse- Tyson; you've been an inspiration to me for years! This show and your co- host are entertaining, informative, creating a craving for more, more, more knowledge and learning! I thank you so much for this! I had to add a comment on this particular episode; remember, 'Quantum Leap'? Way back in the day when it aired, someone was thinking about the randomness of time- space travel. It was mentioned several times by Al that Doctor Beckett was set to a specific time range and within the physical places he'd been before he jumped the first time. The entire premise was based on figuring out plotting the four coordinates needed to bring him back to where he began. I know that a lot of the series was relatively frivolous, but it did address isolation, space- time travel, moral end ethical considerations, what else might be out there. I always think about the last episode. I don't think he died in the conventional sense. I like to think he moved on to other dimensions. Anyway, thank you for this series, and for the provocative content! Thank you for doing what you do!

I am most likely speaking for my self if not a very small percentage of people here, but I REALLY WANT TO SEE MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS! I love simply being able to listen to someone explain a complex topic/ subject and only have one person asking questions. For me personally, listening to more than two people speaking in a podcast makes it extremely hard to follow along. This is by far on my list of top 5 videos/ episodes to listen to or watch. I love how close they seem, you can tell they can read each other’s personalities. Chuck tried to lift the mood of a very serious Neil while also surprisingly knowing a good amount on the subject at times. Neil, simply focuses on the science, which is why I’m always happy to see him smile & laugh when Chuck chimes in. If it weren’t for Chuck, I could see the weight of Neil’s knowledge weighing down on him. I study Physics but have no friends & being alone with the knowledge is not fun. 😂

@@andye5724 The only legitimate criticism I’ve seen is the “love is the only thing that transcends time and space thing” and that the movie is too long but it’s still my favorite space movie ever.

@@andye5724 The time dilation is actually extremely accurate because the physicist Kip Thorn worked on making the relativity calculations work out to what Christopher Nolan wanted for the movie. The only thing that might be implausible about it is how fast the black hole rotates to make the time dilation so extreme but that is a small concern compared to making sure the physics works. The movie itself is extremely scientifically accurate in general, excluding the 5th dimension thing which we can’t confirm or deny under our current knowledge and is strictly science fiction. The most egregious things I know of are the blight and the ice clouds but otherwise I think most things in the movie are plausible. It nails the space side of things so that’s why it’s my favorite space movie to date.

I'd seen _Slaughterhouse Five_ as a kid, but had a heck of a time finding it to purchase as an adult. He would open a door at one point of his life and be coming out a door at another; sometimes remembering what was about to happen, but not being able to change it more than incidentally. It did like a lot of things in the movie better than the book, but one thing the book had was that when they came out of the bomb shelter Dresden was totally destroyed like a lunar scape with no other survivors. But in the movie it was just another bombing, with people using hoses to put out building fires. One of the reference books cited in the book, _The Bombing of Dresden_ was said to be anti-American, anti-British propaganda to make the death toll higher than it was.

A book called "The Accidental Time Machine" by Joe Haldeman addresses the Earth moving through space in orbit around the Sun and the time machine having to account for that. I thought that was really cool! As someone who has been a fan of time travel fiction had thought of that fundamental flaw in BTTF and many other time travel fiction stories

A star could have blown up 5 days after you seen it, but given the immense distance, the light from the supernova has yet to reach our solar system. Therefore, we are simply seeing "old light" from a long dead star.

Neil, when travelling in time, one doesn't just have to take the earth's orbit of the Sun into consideration, but our solar system's orbit around the galaxy, and the movement of the galaxy itself, not to forget that space is expanding, but shrinking as you go backwards in time.

Hey guys, wanted to add that one of my favorite British authors Brian Lumley has a series of books called Necroscope. In those books he describes a unique theory of lifelines or timelines for individual people and how they intersect. It's a very similar concept to the 'World line' Neil was describing. I love watching this after watching Loki season 2 regarding spacetime. They call the "world lines" as a "temporal aura" and reference it almost exactly as stated here as an intersectional lines of people meeting each other in space and time (i.e., "collective temporal aura"); which I would personally call: "spatiotemporal aura" Exciting stuff!

The Delorean is actually a portal device, which is why it disappears. The amazing epiphany that Doc Brown had when he hit his head wasn't simply how to time travel, it was how to make time travel "possible". As mentioned at the beginning of this video, you don't usually need to give someone a height coordinate, because it can be assumed that you mean "the surface of the earth", likewise the Delorean also assumes the same thing and calculates where you would need to be to end up at relatively the same geographical location on earth. (*I don't know if they intended any of that. I just made it up.)

Love the show. I saw those lines portrayed in sci-fi, actually made me understand it (thanks). It’s in Star Trek: enterprise. The temporal episode when the crewman shows captain archer how time travellers monitor the timeline in his quarters with his device. I think there are a couple other instances. Oh and good point about how time travel without space travel wouldn’t work as you would end up in the same coordinates. Which means going on the anniversary of the earth rotation wouldn’t work either. Actually only travelling through time will make you end up in the vacuum of space and die a horrible death 100% of the time. The reason being that everything is in motion, not just the earth around the sun. The sun itself is rotating around the galactic centre. Our galaxy is moving through space as well, etc. Etc. Better be good at calculating and taking all those into account when you travel through time as you have to basically teleport very very far away from where you currently are to be in the correct space time location!!🤓

You could time travel in a space ship. Then you travel so far into future that you're close to a black hole to get wanted inertia and do it as many times as you need to match speed and position of Earth surface at the exact moment you want to travel to.

It's a good start, but you also have to account for the movement of the solar system in the galactic disk and the galaxy itself or you will still end up in space. You even have to think about the direction of the local cluster and the dark energy pushing everything apart. If you think about it everything is moving in different directions and it would be almost impossible to consider everything.

I just realized that Neil and Jack Horkheimer must have been friends, because Neil says "keep looking up" like Jack always said in his Star Hustler and Star Gazer series, and Jack on one of his shows years ago mentioned the same trick of bending over and viewing the moon through your legs to make it appear less humongous at the horizon by making the surroundings less familiar in appearance.

8:16 I just thought of this. There will never be the possibility of time travel. Neil’s reason (and I agree) is that the earth is moving and rotating therefore you’d have to go back in space and in time. But this means that you can go back in time by just inputting the date-time coordinates as well as earth space coordinates. But that will still not work because our sun is moving, our galaxy is moving, and the universe itself is expanding! This means that you’d have to input the universe space coordinates instead of just the Earth space coordinates. Then again, how would you know the coordinates since the universe is expanding??

The back to the future example is also interesting when you realize that the solar system is moving through space.. so you could NEVER end up at that exact location unless your machine was able to account for that as well. Not only would you end up in space, but the earth's orbit (the whole solar system) would have moved from its location in the universe as well.

The Earth, the solar system, and the entire galaxy would have moved from their previous locations. I can't imagine how humans will ever invent a time machine that can account for all that within the next million years.

Exactly what I was thinking. It is nearly impossible for any time travel machine to compensate for all the constantly vahnging coordinates, which also include the expansion of space. The only thing I can envision is that the time machine is bound to the gravity of the ground it lies on during its journey through time.

OMG I loved it!!!! Not so long ago I saw a HUGE MOON over the horizon of the town I live, and it was redish and HUGE, I was freaking out watching it while it was going up in the sky and getting smaller. Regarding the world lines - this concept was depicted in Stephen King's time travel novel, 11/22/63. There was a character portrayed called "The Yellow Card Man" who along with his colleagues was responsible for keeping track of all the time lines that were created by time travelers creating different divergences of time. The yellow card man was able to see the original time line and also the variations that were created. The yellow card man was responsible for making sure that no one created time paradoxes - which always happened anytime anyone traveled back in time.

But the bigger problem with Marty going back to the same time earth was in it's same orbit would still put him in space, as the entire universe is moving. Even though the earth would be in the same position relatively around the sun, it would not be in the same position in the Galaxy which is also moving. (if my understanding of space ship earth is correct.)

Main issues with space travel beyond our Star System are: Gravity Instability, Radiation, Micro meteors and singularities, and distance / speed. We not only need to protect ourselves and our ships against many problems, we also need to stay on course and not take too long, or we won't ever reach our destinations in time. 'distance over speed has to be equal or distance has to be less than speed' (100 / 100 = 1 or 100 / 1000 = 0.1) that's the only way we will be able to make it useful to travel beyond our 'town'. On the hair loss thing, Albinoism is also something that can happen at any age. On the time line spaghetti, I'm fairly certain Time Tunnel visualized that?

I’m happy Neil talked about the earth’s location for time travel as I have always asked this when someone mentions time travel. However, I take it a step further. If space is expanding, earth would never be in the same location. My thought has always been what if time travel is possible but every time we try it the subject ends in space.

This concept Neil explained that if we time traveled, the Earth would likely not be in that position in space at the time you travel to so you would likely end up in the vacuum of space and even if by some small chance the Earth's surface is in that position at that time, you would likely end up in a different part of the world (probably the ocean), is something that never occurred to me when thinking about time travel on the Earth, or any world, and I'm always thinking about things of this nature and watch a lot of Sci-fi. So I was honestly taken back and the mind was blown. And since this concept hasn't been captured when time travel occurs in sci-fi, it appears it has eluded most. Exactly - that would be a problem we would always run into with time travel. We would have to calibrate our time machines to calculate where that exact spot on Earth would be located in space at any given time. And since the future holds unforseen situations it's possible the Earth could be located slightly or completely off course when we travel in the future. We would need to either be in a space suit or a space ship every time we travel to the future and probably every time we time traveled for good measure. 😄 We need to make a space ship time machine like that one Klingon Bird of Prey in Star Trek. 😄

The Earth would still retain its orbit around the sun for around 8 minutes after the Sun was “plucked out”? Is that really how the gravitational forces work? I would’ve thought that Earth would immediately lose its orbit. Kind of like how you let go of a yo-yo after spinning it around on its end

Nothing happens immediately as you think. If in your example you let go of a yo-yo, it takes time for tension to disappear at the other end of the string which is communicated between individual molecular bonds of the string. The fastest possible speed information can travel is speed of light.

Yeah I see what you guys mean but the way Neil explained it just made it sound like we would still retain orbit for that same amount of time that the “snuffed out” Sun’s light would take to get to us here in Earth before we finally realize it’s not there anymore. Maybe some amount of time we remain in orbit but probably not the full 8 minutes and 20 seconds? I’m just not sure what the correlation between how long we remain in orbit with respect to the distance/light speed it takes to reach us

Yes this is exactly what would happen. We would retain Orbit until the Light (which is traveling at the speed of light) reaches us. Just like the yo-yo would retain orbit around your hand until the light from the moment you let it go reaches the yo-yo. The thing you have to wrap your mind around is how far away the sun really is.

@@FelixEnder Speed of tension disappearing in the string is actually a lot slower than speed of light. It’s equal to the speed of sound in the string. Sound is a wave traveling through material by spring action between individual atoms and molecules of that material. When tension is applied to a string, molecules spread apart to build certain potential energy between them and when it’s released that potential gets released from one molecule to the next like a spring. That is also how sound travels. But that speed being a lot faster in solid materials than speed of sound in air is still many orders of magnitude slower than speed of light. Gravity disappearing from the Sun not being there anymore travels via gravitational waves which propagate at the same speed as electromagnetic waves or light.
