I once read a book titled "Firefly" written by Piers Anthony. That creature was from Earth, but very different from most of our experience, in appearance like the Blob. However, it used pheromones to attract it's prey, and once in contact had other chemicals that would immobilize it's prey. In the story, this worked very well on humans. The giant amoeba was not the horror in this story. The real horror was how we treat each other. @ 33:00 I saw the movie "Somewhere In Time" and loved it. As it happens, I have been to Mackinac Island to the hotel the movie was filmed in. Watching brought back so many memories of being there, I almost felt I had gone back in time myself.

A similar story to Neil's description of the time loop is the Bootstrap Paradox. I learned it from Doctor Who, but it goes something like this: There's a man of the future who is obsessed with the works of Ludwig van Beethoven. He has all of his sheet music in his collection. One day, he learns a time machine has been invented. Of course the first thought on his mind is to meet Beethoven, his hero. So he travels through time and finds, to his horror, nobody has ever heard of Beethoven. Beethoven doesn't exist. The man is crushed, as he cannot live in a world without the works of Ludwig. However, he realizes that he has all of Beethoven's sheet music with him. So he publishes Beethoven's music. He has them conducted. So where did the notes come from? Whose mind conjured the melodies? Who really wrote Beethoven's Fifth?

Most people make the mistake of thinking Arthur C. Clarke wrote 2001 but actually the screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke's 1951 short story "The Sentinel" and other short stories by Clarke. A novel released after the film's premiere was in part written concurrently with the screenplay. And Kubrick withheld facts about his movie from Clarke on purpose to make it more of its own thing.

My time travel would involve meeting JS Bach, presenting him with even a rudimentary sound recording device, get him to play and then playing his own performance back to him. Leaving aside the cries of witchcraft, I ponder over what his reaction would be.

Neil, we love you and all you do to bring science and learning to the world. You are clearly under the weather in this podcast. I do not think any of your followers need a new podcast so bad that you have to suffer. Take some time off. Have a hot totty or two or 10. Come back when you are feeling better.

I recently watched Back to the Future in Netflix. Why time travel is impossible? There are two types of changes in chemistry, physical and chemical. Everything we see is the product of either the changes. Time is illusion, it is the matter that moves and changes. So, going back to 1980’s would require you to reverse the changes of things on a grand scale.
