Its been a very productive last few days round here! We've started Gary's Workshop/Garage & We finished the Basement Waterproofing! We still have a few things to do before we can backfill and bury the basement - but the really hard part is over! Next things for the basement will be the French drains, sump pump & floor joists! Sooo exciting guys! Another step closer!

Hey yall! We ARE AWARE of our "oppsie" in this video, the first audio track volume level. 🥺 We usually lower the volume when we're talking BUT for whatever reason it didn't lower it for the first song track we used in this video. The rest of the video should good to go though. Thanks for understanding 😊 PLEASE STOP COMMENTING ABOUT IT.. WE KNOW.

Recommendation for the garage. Do 3 courses (2') of block for the wall to stand on. This does 2 things--it gives you a taller inside roof without paying for the lumber. It also gives you a wall that is raised off the slab where potential outside or inside water will not creep under the mud sill and crate a moisture area that will eventually rot. OR accumulated snow sitting on the siding. (if you get snow) Additionally if you are sliding something heavy against the interior wall, it prevents poking a hole in the wall if you plan on closing in the walls---say with sheet rock

To help with the ground erosion where you are dropping on the levels, I would recommend looking into ground Ivy. It sets massive roots, and is something that will never need to be mowed down.

Hi Gary and Melanie, slowly but surely! You all and the kids are truly living the dream.Great idea to build garage 1st- Confucius say:"Water flow down" - therefore never buil house 🏠 on bottom of mountain- unless you are doing diversionary egress- which you have forethought. Your basement will be a great tornado shelter/build safe room under stairs- season is amongst us. Stay safe and God 🙌. Semper Fi- Peter

That was so neighborly for David to help you guys out today. (I watch his channel too.) I would like to suggest that on the slope side of the garage you may want to really shore up that slope area. My sister has been in a house for 30 years, the house is about 50 years old. It's also on the edge of the slope too and now the foundation is cracking and giving way. Seeing how you get rain by the bucket full I would also like to suggest that you put in a French Drain just in front of the apron of your garage with a grate covering. That way you should never have a flooding issue in your garage.

When you get to building the garage if you're planning on putting a lift in and you're going with polebarn style make the walls at least 14 foot high then you can put a loft over the workbench tool area for a mancave.

My shop is 24x24 and wish it was 30x40. Over the years you accumulate alot more stuff. And I wish it was 16' tall walls to put a 2-post car lift in it. I'm getting to old to get on a creeper and get up again. My neighbor has a 40x60 with a 20x70 extension on the back to park his 28' travel trailer, boat, and mower in. Plus he's got 2 car lifts in there. 3 bays, nice! Oh well I got a key to his shop and I can use his lift if I need it. He helps me and I help him. Not bad for a 67 and 70 yr old farts!

Gary & Mel, congratulations on another huge step on your way to the finish line! What you have accomplished in such a short amount of time is amazing! Thanx to family & friends who are willing to lend a helping hand, it makes the load lighter. All too often there are set backs & circumstances beyond our control that are disappointing, yet thru it all you both have managed to see the positive side by looking at the progress you have made & also by looking forward to what you will do in the coming days. It's great to see your willingness to be satisfied with succeeding with even small steps because they too are forward progress. It's wonderful that you are documenting that progress because you will, one day be able to review the entire process when it's finally finished & you will be super proud of building your own homestead!!! Cheering you on for the days ahead!
