Starter not engaging..making a definitive spinning sound.

Yes! I suspect the starter fault too! I tried to start my car just this morning and I could hear some fly wheel or some gears spinning. But it feels like it is not connected to the shaft of the engine, so it could not start but I could clearly hear something spinning freely underneath. And this helped me prove 80 percent of the problem because It could be pther factors but this video was the closest prediction I could get.

This is the exact same thing that happened to me and this video helped me confirm my faulty starter. I took it back to Autozone, installed the new one and it starts right up. Thanks for the video.

Are you saying you got a new starter but within a short. Of time that crapped out because I just bought one from AutoZone as well about 2 weeks ago and it is now doing this exact same thing although I do not pull it out to verify was the same problem. It is spinning but not engaging perhaps I was just unlucky enough to get a crap starter.
@MilwaukeeMatt12 жыл бұрын
@@miguelquazar883 I installed the first autozone starter and removed it. Took it to autozone and had them bring out a new one to show them the difference. The good starter has tension on the part that meets the flywheel so when it engages it comes up but then retracts down. My bad starter from Autozone just spun in place which is why it wasn't making a connection with the flywheel. After I got the replacement I had no problems.

@@miguelquazar883 Never buy a starter or a alternator from them. Don't do it even they say lifetime warranty. You will replace that 2 or 3 times.
@miguelquazar883 Жыл бұрын
@@spencer6526 Ive learned my lesson. Their lifetime warranty doesnt care if I am late to work or have to explain to employer for a 2nd time in a week. I recently had an issue with a coil I replaced just a few years ago. Luckily I kept an oroginal one in my tool bag I ride with because the new ones were scary cheap lol... I had just picked up a bluetooth scan tool 3 days prior as well to help a friend. Luckily I was riding around with it and was able to find out why the car started running like crap and the check engine light was blinking. I was able to troubleshoot and fix the problem on the highway shoulder within 30 mins... (Misfire on cyl. #3) The coil took a crap. The old coil I threw back in was a DENSO. The new starter I got after the Autozone one was also a DENSO (rebuilt) starter. No issues at all. Some things just arent worth being too cheap about when it comes to car parts. Less expensive is ok. Too cheap will let you down. Screw Autozone's lifetime warranty on their starters. Also get yourself a scan tool and ride with it! You can help yourself or someone else, or atleast know if and where you might need a tow or maybr just a ride to a parts store. 👍🏻

100% Did the same thing, took the starter to Autozone, they said it passed, they don’t know what they’re doing over there. I tested every conceivable possibility (connections, battery, fuses, relays...) and each one passed. Found it odd that I heard a humming sound when I tried starting, then it dawned on me, that humming is the sound of the gear spinning but not engaging the flywheel. Total PITA getting to this point but I’m sure it’s the starter. Going to buy one at the OTHER parts store lol.

2008 yukon 5,3 that's my starter. changed the starter to new. Same thing. There are three terminals on the solenoid. the middle one is a control from the ECM. The large one on the left is the positive to the battery, the large one on the right goes straight into the starter motor. My guess is the ECM is overriding the solenoid, but allowing power to flow. No idea yet how to get this fixed without spending a ton of money.

I'm having a problem with my new stater not engaging the engine. My battery is probably dead because when I jump started it. The starter free spins. I made sure that the starter was properly installed in the reverse order that I removed the old one. I then tried to jump start it again. The only power I got was from the other vehicle's power. So it's the battery correct? I changed the battery terminal that connects the negative because it was bad. So, My last effort to fix this mess is to install a new battery and hopefully it will work because the starter will not engage the engine. Please help me

Did you find the answer? Mine with spin and almost start the engine but not quite get there, then I go to turn the key again and it will spin but not engage even though it engaged like 2-3 times before. I cleaned the terminals because when I put it in my hands were super oily from touching the car, it sat for years, and it seemed to work better after but not quite, it still does it

@@famousmoon but you could be right man, if it happens with multiple starter motors than maybe its missing teeth on the flywheel. I bought a "rebuilt" starter recently and on the second time I tried to start the car the starter just spun for two cranks before engaging with the flywheel on the third crank and so I ordered another one and returned my faulty one and it starts up right away and does not just spin.
@hmpz369113 жыл бұрын
@@famousmoon could be broken tooth on flexplate. Turn it an inch & see if atarta better then. If so should be fine & not really have to be replaced. Avoid doing a lot of work & $.

I have a 2009 Honda crv that had problems starting about a couple of weeks ago. My daughter had the car on campus so I contracted a mechanic that comes to you. So we had suspected the starter so we got all the necessaries for the job. So the mechanic asked my daughter for the keys and lo and behold it started! So my daughter was driving to and fro no issues then she called and said that the car was not starting again and that she suspected that the cold had something to do with it. The battery was ruled out because it was brand new. She said initially when she tried to start it, it sounded like static when she turned the key. A friend of hers told her he heard the starter spinning but not engaging. Thus we concluded that it was the starter malfunctioning. So she called me back and told me that the car started and the next day as well so she drove home and parked it overnight then tried to start it this morning which was cold like 17. So when I got home and tried I heard spinning. I am assuming the sound is the starter but I need to verify if that's really it.

I had 9 Bad NEW Starters in a Row.. 1986 Dodge Truck. The Starters were all Over Drawling Amperage and would continue while the vehicle was driving. Starter did not stay engaged. I figured out the issue in High School after my parents friends had been to the dealer multiple times and were fed up. It is still one of the oddest issues. It would kill the truck at a stop light even, then wouldn't start for days or started right up. Turned out the dealership had a run of failing starters but still the OverDrawl is one thing, to kill the truck while driving, thats an odd starter issue. I have never seen that same problem again on any car in thirty years..
