Great video, i actually have a starter rebuild video being released in a couple days too. One note though, there is way more stuff in the way under the intake manifold on an AP1. It is impossible to reach your hand under the intake manifold like you did in the video. I believe the 04-05 AP2 have the same clutter as well. Luckily i pulled my starter out and rebuilt it when the trans was out of the car and subframe dropped 3". Made it so much easier.

Thanks! I have done it before on an AP1 but at the time I had removed the intake manifold support bracket. I’m not sure if it was even needed really. It was more frustrating but it was also my first time doing the job 😀

Try to always buy the Denso Reman Units or used OEM Honda Starters. They will last longer and actually work better with the S2k. I bought a reman unit from PepBoys and it failed after a year and I had to carry a portable jumper at all times because it would kill my battery constantly.

How did you know it was your starter. I’m having a no crank issue right now, drove my car last night and it was perfect, was gonna take it out this morning to laguna and didn’t want to start. No crank, battery good and alternator is good, my car just didn’t want to start. Debating if it’s the starter.

Sounds like it. Have you messed with the starter at all because what is common is for the power cable to back off if you’ve messed with it.

Thanks for the video, but there's no need to jack up the car or go from the bottom. I removed the radiator hose from the rad and moved it to the side, this gave me plenty of space to slowly maneuver the starter out from the top.

hi. i need to do this in a few days. thanks for this vid, i hope its as easy as you make it look. one question. i am sure there is a reason why you have removed it from underneath. is there no way of bringing it forwards to where the alt sits and out that way or up the side of the intake manifold? would like to do the job without going underneath if I dont have to.

Torque sensor cleanin' next!
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 4 жыл бұрын
You are the 5th person to request this. It hasn't become a big enough issue for me yet but seems pretty straightforward.
@rolandotillit2867
@rolandotillit2867 4 жыл бұрын
@@DIYGuysvideo The biggest issue with this is that people don't understand how the sensor works. When you take apart the unit, you notice the sensor picks up the reciprocating motion of the spring loaded beige piece. When the wheel is turned, the resistance between the steering wheel and the steering rack causes the beige piece to slide. The sensor detects how much the piece slides and the EPS computer energizes the motor. When that piece doesn't move smoothly due to worn out grease it causes issues. It can bind in places and when it's bound the EPS doesn't register any steering torque and gives you zero assistance. Or it can suddenly unbind in which case the computer gives you all the assistance it can and steering goes light. Sometimes it can bind and unbind due to bumps in the road and steering will be all wonky.

Great tutorial. I've done this before, and it was a bitch of a job. Clear pictures like these would be very helpful in knowing what you are looking for. Do not under estimate how easy it is to destroy the knock sensor. I didn't even realize I grazed mine until it fell apart in my hands.

Besides replacing the starter, is there any preventative maintenance that can be done before it goes bad? Cleaning? Replacing parts? Seems like brushes are common wear items. Replacement brushes are 31231-P3F-003.
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 4 жыл бұрын
As far as preventing the starter from failure there is nothing that I know of. Brushes are certainly wear items but its not clear what the the typical root cause of the failure is. Given that remanufactured units directly from Denso are about $120 most people seem to just replace the starter entirely.

@@DIYGuysvideo The part that pushes out the pinion on the starter and retracts it is what wears.
@DIYGuysvideo

@@rolandotillit2867 It wears but it doesn't necessarily seem to lead to any failure, just causes that annoying screeching sound no? Myself and many folks on the forums seem to have gone anywhere between 2-10 years with the screeching noise and a starter that works fine.
@Beavyo
@Beavyo 4 жыл бұрын
@@DIYGuysvideo Agree, mine has been screeching for years. Only when the car is really cold though. Took the solenoid mechanism apart while I was replacing the clutch recently, could not find anything sticking/binding so I just greased it and put it back in. Still screeches.

I think both of them are on the engine wiring harness. Alternator wire will be coupled with another wire with plastic connector while starter wire will be coupled with small metal clip.

@@DIYGuysvideo So really I can just wait until I have the subframe all back up and the trans on before removing starter? Getting the bolts out is harder because there's more shit under the manifold. Previous owner only did a partial air pump delete i need to finish that later.

I've been having the same problem for years. I have trouble starting the car when it's hot. Annoying at the gas station after a quick fill up. I'm more worried if I stall in an intersection and can't start it up. I've been carrying my battery pack to boost it but it's not always 100%. Any suggestion? It sounds like a labour intensive repair. I know it's not the battery. I've replaced it many times at costco. Works ok for a couple of months.
