Hell, I might get this just for the setting booklet. Looks beautiful.

This was a very nice review that partially convinced me to buy the set. After having spent some time with it, I'd add the following: The materials are all of top notch quality, and will likely last longer than materials included with the average RPG starter set. At the same time, they took an organizational approach that seemed far too heavily tailored to the GM. Throughout the box were cautions telling you not to read this, and not to read that unless you were going to be the GM. This resulted in next to nothing related to the rules and game mechanics being tailored to someone who buys the box intending to be a player. Within the adventure book, I like the fact that the rules were integrated within the adventure, making life easier for the first time GM. But there really needed to be a more player centric version of the rules included, especially since Cubicle 7 doesn't offer anything in the way of free downloadable quick start rules (or at least none that I was able to find). I spent around $27 for the box. The quality of the materials were extremely nice, and the overall value of the box exceeds what I spent. But I do feel like the overall balance of the box was too heavily in favor of a purchaser who intends to be GM rather than a player. And maybe this was based on their gamble that most who buy this do indeed intend to be GM. But if that's the case, they really need to make a quick start version of the rules available online, preferably for free.

I agree with your criticisms. I did also notice that the Guide to Ubersreik seems to be very well done. Bringing Cubicle 7 into the game was a wise move because they have an established history of world-building experience. This also may explain why Cubicle 7 has lost (or voluntarily severed?) their Chaosium license. Runequest and WFRP are likely to directly compete with each other for market share. People can obviously buy both, but many (myself included) will likely only invest in one. That said, I'd buy this simply for ideas to draw from the Guide to Ubersreik.
@BudsRPGreview5 жыл бұрын
I think that RuneQuest and WFRP can compete in the same arena as they are very different flavours of fantasy.
@RPGImaginings5 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking of the first time buyer grabbing something off of a shelf. They may not be likely to spot the distinction on first inspection. Which is why Chaosium needs to get its Runequest Starter out soon. Most FLGS' are likely to display them right next to each other on the shelf.

Hi! Thanks for the video! I'd like to point out that the rules at the inside of the box must be organized that way so that you place it standing up, set in place with the bottom of the box. I used the dnd boxed sets that way at least, and the fact that there are no rules at the bottom reinforce this idea. They would be covered by the bottom of the box.

Wonderfully informative and helpful review, even if i would have actually appreciated some more spoilers as the GM to know what i am going to buy. Maybe worth having a spoiler section for future reviews? Or was there nothing major in it that would be worth that effort, so easy just to leave it out? Probably going to buy the digital version soon myself to run it with my main rpg group as we along with everyone else have decided to bail on d&d 5e, so trying out other systems. Blades in the Dark has been fun, but most players missing combat, so hopefully wfrp can scratch that itch.

Did you read it all before recording? It sounds like you know what you are talking about! I'm looking forward to getting a copy of the Starter set. I have WFRP 3rd ed and like it very much, but I guess it's time to upgrade.
@BudsRPGreview5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I read every single word before recording anything. I've played WFRP since 1st edition back in 1986. Third edition bears no resemblance at all to 1st, 2nd and 4th edition, so this edition will be something you're not used to I imagine. Don't forget to subscribe if you found it useful!

Finally..... I have been eagerly waiting for your assessment of this. I have both this and the main rule book, and agree vehemently with your opinion of 4th edition. Will you be reviewing the main rule book at some point? I have Drachenfels for 1st edition and hope that they do a 4th edition version of that. It seems that they are leaning in that direction since Night of Blood has been released under the clever moniker "Old world adventures: Night of Blood"

My players would never use pre-generated characters, so i would rather have seen them gone and have something in their place, a GMs screen and maybe a nice fold up map of Ubersreik. I'm still impressed with the box set, I'm even ok with the scenario, having tried Thousand Thrones as written and failing to keep them happy, this scenario should be easy. Another great review Bud.

I want to go on record by saying I'm put off a bit by the artwork and art direction, not to say its bad in fact its clearly very competent but it just doesn't seem to capture the gothic fantasy of older editions. What with the art direction leaves the setting seemly looking more high fantasy then sword and sorcery but I guess its in keeping with what's popular today.
