starter testing and inspection 2003 2008 toyota corolla matrix 1.8 starter replacement

I replaced the starter but fisrt I tested the old one and also the new one but what happens when both spin and they both come out how do you determine? also this apply for 2003 2008 corolla and 2004 2008 matrix with the 1.8l engine.
