The secret to developing bonsai is.. Removing everything that is not a bonsai ;)
Setting the scene for future development for this cherry raw bonsai material.
Just for fun.

As I learn more about BONSAI making, I'm in awe of how intricate and amazing this whole thing is! BONSAI started more than 1,000 years ago in China, but perfected in Japanese culture, and it means many things: it is an ART, it is a PHILOSOPHY, it is a DISCIPLINE, etc... The word BONSAI means "Tree in Pot" (Bon + Sai ... Dish or Pot + Tree = BONSAI, in Japanese) 😊🌳🎍🍜

@@medusa6429 I feel that is a very limited view of how Japanese do bonsai. Are you aware of Kimura's work? That clearly if not growing bonsai by slow growing and pinching over generations. E.g., kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqu8qaSQhsqqorssi=AAqeFz9ejm7vcwwU&t=696 . Core is and remains that the end result should be pleasing. But the first stages more often than not include large branch removals and cut-backs.

Hi Damon, I do not agree. The distribution of branches along the trunk was unsuitable, and the thickness was off. Starting from the base gives me control over each branch.
@coloradolove7957
@coloradolove7957 Жыл бұрын
@@GrowingBonsai I disagree to that. Leaving those branches would have fruited more new shoots and provided more opportunity for future trimming and training. While not in your specific spot, once they have grown, you can prune again to control the apical dominance and assert energy to the branch you prefer. This leaves you with smaller scars to heal and more chance for variables that would compliment the bonsai in the future. By cutting too much you have basically just cleaned the slate and are starting new shoots from a large scar and waiting for them to come to size and hide the cuts. But hey it just a plant.

@erwanherve5494
@erwanherve5494 Жыл бұрын
@@coloradolove7957 If it was up to me, I'd cut the main trunk just above the firsts branch. This tree is basically a pole with a slight curve at the bottom which is very unaesthetic. Bonsai takes decades, and sometimes you have to make big cuts to have a high quality tree in the next 10 - 15 years, instead of a boring tree now.

Most cherries are fairly sensitive to deadwood. Prunus mume is an exception. Normally it rots away fast and is a source for infections.To me, deadwood is rarely an aim, and mostly a result based in needs. As cherry in general can heal wounds well, I go for closed cuts instead.
